Getting back to work after a long winter
We just hosted a group of adults with behavioral disabilities. They loved meeting the horses, especially Pharaoh. Rob Gilbert gave them all kinds of fun facts about horses, and a lunging demonstration. I think they were most enthralled by Rob’s ability to connect with Pharaoh and lead him without a halter or lead line in a short amount of time. Connecting with a horse is just one of Rob’s strengths!
The Shire Siblings are back home from the hospital! Violet needs some time to heal after surgery.
For anyone new to the page, Violet and Mason are bonded Shire siblings, rescued a year ago. Shires are on the endangered breed list. The shire breed is the largest and strongest of the draft breeds, but there are very few in ghe sorod after nearly going extinct.
Violet had canker in all four hooves and just had keratoma removed. They both have dental health issues. Both shows signs of not being treated with a gentle hand. They have been in rehab for a year and we have more work to do.
**URGENT MEDICAL TRIP NEXT WEEK**
Can you even believe that’s a hoof?? This progression shows from when we brought Violet here to now. Canker is an ugly, painful disease. We’ve been treating all four hooves and now there is no canker in any of them!
BUT, she still has a unresolving problem and our vet can’t do anything else for her without a CT scan. The ONLY place who has a machine powerful enough for her big body and giant foot with standing sedation AND can take Mason as her companion animal is Tufts University near Boston, which is over 200 miles away from here.
She has improved so much, so we don’t want to stop now! If you can help us get them to Tufts next week so we can get a diagnosis, please make a tax deductible donation today. We have one week to raise $4000 to cover the cost. Venmo, PayPal or through our website donation is preferred. I know we can do this for her!
Thanks to everyone who participated in our Valentine’s Day cookie drive! Here are some of the guys getting their cookies!
You know the horses love Rob Gilbert when a horse uses his prehensile lips to open up the barn door to show us his boo boo and lets Rob treat him without flinching. 🐴💘
For anyone curious about what working with Violet in a stock is like, here’s a time-lapse video of a session. The stock is an oversized draft Amish made shoeing stock from Ohio which weighs about 1500 lbs after it is built on-site. Thanks to Rob and Rich for helping out our big girl!
Dreaming of Horse Treats!
(Sound on!) Rio is dreaming of horse treats, dancing in his head, while Charlie makes the more overt signs he’s ready and waiting for February 14 when he gets his treats. So far, they both have earned 4 horse treats. It’s not too late to show them your support by sending them a Valentine and horse treat!
Here she is! Feeling sooo much better!
