Doing a little trust training with Biscuit! Biscuit needs eye drops but is not totally comfortable with me going near his eyes. In order to build his trust, I’m giving him treats to make him relax more around me and I’m also rewarding him for when he allows me near his eyes with the drops. After a few attempts, he kept turning away from me so instead of forcing it, I let him face away which helped him become more comfortable with the idea of some giving him the eye drops. 👀 #dogtraining
Had to borrow a child for this session! 😃 We’re here with Sully, who is reactive around children, so we’re working to try and change his perspective around kids. Perfect example 👉🏼 You can see the way he freaks out when he first sees my friend’s daughter. So in order to combat this type of behavior, we kept her at a safe distance from the dog, while she attempts to get his attention in various ways. 👏🏼👋🏼 First, we tried it while he was in the car with knocks on the window, followed by a session in the yard with the child running by🏃🏽♀️. When he shows no reaction towards her, he gets rewarded 🦴 so we are conditioning him to think of the presence of children in a positive way 👍🏻and not something he needs to target or react to👎🏻. He made some great progress in this session! And a big thanks to my little actress! 🤩👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Post-training playtime for Cornbread and Gabbar! These two have been working hard here at BK9 so they are very deserving of some free-play fun. This is an important part of the #boardandtrain process because it helps dogs relax, decompress and be comfortable in a new environment. If they are comfortable and relaxed, they are less anxious and more willing to work hard when asked during training sessions. Studies also have shown that playtime after training helps to improve their memory. #WorkHardPlayHard 👊🏻🐾

⁉️“Whaaaaaaat?!?! ⁉️That is not my dog,” said Jerzey’s owner! 😂 Jerzey is an incredibly, incredibly hyper black lab, especially around strangers and other dogs. She is infamous for running at the door 🚪 whenever the doorbell sounds or someone knocks. So this week, the key word with her was repetition. We proofed her place command first with repetition, dropping treats on the floor and rewarding her for staying put. Then we distracted her with doorbell and knocking sounds and finally added in the major distraction of another dog. She got rewarded for staying in place each time. Her owner was in disbelief 😳 watching Jerzey sit calmly with another dog because it has never happened before! This just proves that every dog has it in them - it just takes commitment and patience from both the dog and the owner!

I have no words. My friend Kyla and her family lost their beloved dog Jax Weller. Jax passed away all too soon and what’s so incredible is that he made sure he waited for his owners to come home first so he could say goodbye. 🥺 Dogs are so special - we truly don’t deserve them. ❤️Jax was my friend’s heart dog and I feel lucky to have met him

🐾Odie is a 6-month-old Carolina dog mix, who will be with us learning his basics 👉🏼 here, sit, place, down and more. We’re teaching him using lots of food luring 😋 and repetition! Consistency and repetition will be key with this pup!
Ecollar recall with Rosie! Pressure on, pressure off. I ask for her to come to me while simultaneously using the ecollar at her working level. I keep the pressure on until she commits, and then the pressure goes away. Once it’s clear that she understands what the ecollar means, I move to a single “prompt” tap on the ecollar when asking her to come to me. The next step will be NCS (non compliant stim) which means she will only feel the pressure if she doesn’t respond to the first ask to come to me and I need to repeat the command. Working on the “place” command with Lemon and inviting her sister, Honey, in to help with proofing and duration. I’d say this training session was a success! It’s all about the repetition… when Lemon would break place, I’d ask her to go back. I’m not using corrections at this point since she is still learning, so I’m rewarding her, and already she is understanding what I am asking of her. Working hard with Fiona! Today we focused on her “place” command as well as her impulse control when it comes to seeing other dogs. She has a short history of reacting while in the crate and on leash to other dogs. Not only am I testing her intentions, I’m teaching her that reacting is not OK. I accomplished today’s mission and now I can continue to make meeting other dogs a neutral and positive experience for her. This is important information! I’m human and so therefore I make mistakes. Dogs are dogs, and they too, make mistakes. Today’s mistake could have had serious consequences but thankfully it didn’t. I mistakenly left a bag of dog food open in the room Jax was loose in. Three hours later, his belly was distended about 3x its regular size and he was visibly uncomfortable and sick. My first thought was bloat- which can cause death incredibly quickly and so I was panicked. It wasn’t until he threw up right before getting into the car that the lightbulb went off in my head that he had actually eaten the food. We still took the car ride to the vet to get an X-ray, followed by induced vomiting and ending in a hefty vet bill all in under an hour. Jax had consumed about 5lbs of kibble in a matter of minutes. 😣 Thankfully I was home and caught it and he is OK!! So many other serious and detrimental scenarios could have come out of this had I not caught it. I’m sharing this info as a friendly reminder to my lovely followers to be sure that your pups can’t get into not only their food but any food in general. Most dogs don’t know when enough is enough lol 🤷🏼♀️ #dogsafetytips #healthydog #thankavetrinarian
