From the day she arrived till now, her transformation has been incredible. When she first came to us as an "experienced ambassador animal," she was suffering from fear, malnutrition, and debilitating anxiety. But now, she's thriving!Piccu has gained weight and is now a healthy 10 pounds, compared to her previous 4.5 pounds. Her tail is completely full, and the scars on her wrists from self-mutilation are almost gone. She's slowly learning to trust people and has even allowed me (Sara) to handle her while she eats. Though I can't pick her up yet, she's comfortable climbing on me. Last night, she surprised me by bringing her cleaning rag and sitting in my lap, grooming herself. It was such a heartwarming moment!One of Piccu's biggest challenges is her diet. Due to her previous improper nutrition, she's an extremely picky eater. She refuses to eat monkey biscuits, dog food, leafy vegetables, corn, and anything processed. However, she does enjoy the occasional treat of mini marshmallows. It's a reminder that she wasn't exposed to a proper diet before coming to us.Despite her dietary preferences, Piccu has some favorite things that bring her joy. She loves exploring different smells, playing with superworms, snuffle mats, small stuffed animals, fluffy blankets, and kong toys. If we look like we’ve been playing lions and tigers we haven’t, but it’s close! Meet Asha and Econ…our unrelated African Wild Cats. They represent the two different lineages imported from South Africa. Econ is 6 months old, and Asha 6 weeks. While they look like cute kittens, they aren’t. They are wild through and through, and once full size will go into an outdoor naturalistic enclosure while still enjoying daily playtime with our family and visitors. The hands on play time multiple times a day makes a huge difference in creating a bond and a relationship with these animals.
