This is my Female Orchid
Mantis. Her name is Cloud. She is all white and so beautiful. Orchid mantises can be all white, all pink, or a combo of white with pink highlights.
The green spot on her thorax is how you determine her gender. A green spot is only on females and a brownish spot is on males.
Do you see the small black spot on the end of her abdomen? This resembles a fly and it tricks the prey. A fly will land on or around it. She will sway side to side to resemble a flower and then attack the fly and eat it. They are such amazing creatures.

This is an Orchid Mantis.
They are the first insect ever shown to mimic an entire flower & attract insects to them. They hide in plain sight because they truly look like a flower. I think they are so beautiful.

My little friend has grown a bit! This is the Orchid Mantis, on the same flower I photographed her on before, but several molts later. She used to fit inside one flower petal, now she's as large as these flowers! It's been so fascinating to observe her as she grows:

Some really old images from the first time I had orchid mantises (Hymenopus coronatus), and had no clue what I was doing (I wasn't very successful.
Anyway, why do mantids seem to have red/ purple eyes in some images and in others they don't?
The insect compound eye comes in 2 different (main) varieties: Apposition eyes and superposition eyes.
The apposition eve has each ommatidium (single lens) isolated from it's neighbors by a pigment coat, so only light falling directly into it reaches the photoreceptor cells, this leads to very sharp images (the "pixels" don't overlap) but poor light sensitivity, as only a tiny fraction of all the incoming light is actually detected.
The superposition eye in contrast does not have ommatidia isolated from each other.
Instead they are organized in a way that each little lens captures as much light as possible, even light coming in at an angle, and because the ommatidia are not isolated the photoreceptor cells of neighboring ommatidia can detect light that came in at an angle. This lowers resolution but massively increases light sensitivity, a must have for any nocturnal insect
Praying mantids eyes combine features of the apposition and superposition eye.
During the day, when there is plenty of light the mantid eye works like an apposition eye, with ommatidia isolated from each other by pigment. This leads to the
"normal" look of the eye.
When it turns dark however things change:
The mantis withdraws the pigment from between the ommatidia, allowing more light to be collected in exchange for a lower resolution. Once the pigment is gone we can freely look at the photoreceptor cells at the bottom of the ommatidia, and at the pigment down there, which are red/pink in color.

The white and pink one is a freshly molted to adult female orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus), the yellow one on the right is her oldest sister that's been adult for a few months.
As nymphs they start out as red and black ant or maybe assassin bug mimics, then molt to become the familiar white color which they keep throughout their development, some get more or less bright pink in some parts, often most intensely just before molts. Then once they become adult they lose the pink and become more and more yellow with some brown spots.
It's easy to see why everyone likes these so much.
