Life changes impact our dogs too 🐾

The past couple of months have been full of big shifts for me. My five year relationship ended 💔, I was in between living situations 🏠➡️❓, and I finally landed in a new place 🛋️.

During all that, training with my own dogs took a back seat. I kept up the basic structure and rules, but formal sessions just weren’t happening. I was stressed and they were feeling it too.

Now that we’re more settled, it’s clear they’re adjusting. We’re dusting off the cobwebs 🕸️ on things like threshold manners (waiting at the door before going out 🚪), learning the roommate’s cat is not a toy 🐱, and figuring out how to live peacefully with two new housemate dogs — a Dalmatian 🐶 and a Corgi 🐕. The integration process takes time, and that’s okay.

If you’ve been going through life changes and training has slipped through the cracks, I get it. It happens. You’re not behind. Your dog isn’t broken. You’re both just adapting ❤️‍🩹

If it feels like a lot and you’re not sure where to start, reach out. I’d love to help you create a doable plan that supports both you and your dog 💬✨

Puppy fever: cured (for now). I got to spend some time with the sweetest little 12-week-old Shih Tzu Maltese mix named Moet. His family was dealing with a family emergency so I stepped in to care for him and we made the most of our puppy time together

We went on some socialization adventures which means safe positive exposure to new people sounds environments and a few calm puppy-safe adult dogs.

Socialization is not about turning your puppy into everyone's best friend. It’s not about letting strangers overwhelm them or introducing them to every dog on the street. It’s about helping them learn the world is a safe place full of interesting things

Moet handled everything like a champ. He explored with curiosity, showed healthy caution when needed, and gained confidence with every new experience.

If you have a puppy, start early go at their pace and keep the focus on positive experiences. Quality over quantity always

Most people think dog training means carrying treats around forever.
But food is just one piece of the puzzle.

Your dog has a whole world of preferences you might not have even noticed yet.

Some dogs would choose a favorite toy over any treat. Others get lit up by the chance to chase a ball, sniff a bush, or just get to do something fun.

The truth is, you don’t have to bribe your dog into listening.
It’s about understanding what actually motivates them—and using that to build connection.

Because here’s the thing: motivation is like gas in a car.
Without it, you're not going anywhere—no matter how well-built the engine is.
The trick is finding the right fuel for your dog.

A dog who’s truly engaged isn’t thinking, what do I get if I do this?
They’re thinking, I love this—we’re doing it together.

That’s the difference between training that feels like a chore… and a relationship that feels like a partnership.

Your dog is already telling you what they love—through their choices, their reactions, the things they light up for.

You just have to pay attention.

Training Is More Than You Think

“Training” sounds so simple—but what I actually do with clients is so much more than just teaching a dog to sit or stay.

Yes, obedience is part of it. But most of the time, I’m:

🐾A peacekeeper—helping bridge the gap between your expectations and your dog’s instincts.
🐾An enrichment coordinator—coming up with ways to keep your dog’s brain busy when it’s 100° outside and no one wants to walk.
🐾A sounding board—when you’re frustrated and tired and wondering if you’re doing it all wrong.
🐾A goal setter—so you can focus on progress instead of panicking over every little thing.
🐾A translator—decoding what your dog is really trying to say with those behaviors.
🐾A juggler—of your schedule, your family’s needs, your dog’s quirks, and real-life limitations.

When someone says, “I just want my dog to listen,” what they usually mean is: I just want things to feel easier and more peaceful at home.

That’s not just about obedience—it’s about connection. It’s about building a relationship that works for both of you.

That’s the part I really love.

When is safe and convenient to so, it’s nice to let our dogs get as smelly and dirty as they like.

Letting them practice natural behaviours at appropriate times gives them the outlets they need.

Planning to bring your dog on Memorial Day travels? Whether it's a family barbecue or weekend getaway, it helps to think ahead about how your dog might experience these events:

What we often hope for:
🐾A dog who calmly greets new people
🐾Quiet settling during meals
🐾Pleasant walks in new environments
🐾Relaxation despite holiday commotion

What many dogs actually experience (and how they respond):

⛔Overwhelming excitement leading to jumping on guests
⛔Stress that triggers food-seeking behaviors
⛔Anxiety in unfamiliar places causing pulling
⛔Nervousness about strange sounds and people

The good news? Even a week of focused practice can make a meaningful difference for your dog's comfort and behavior.

Consider focusing on:
👉Place command for mealtime settling
👉Gentle greeting routines
👉Leash skills in gradually more distracting areas
👉Creating positive associations with the crate for quiet time

Your dog deserves to enjoy holidays too, without the stress of unclear expectations.

🎉 I’m officially CPDT-KA certified! 🎉
(Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed)

You might be wondering…what does that mean? And why does it matter?

Here’s the thing:
Dog training is an unregulated industry.
That means anyone can call themselves a dog trainer—no license, no oversight, no standard of care required. Scary, right?

I chose to pursue CPDT-KA certification because your dog deserves better. You deserve better.

This certification means:
✅ I’ve passed a rigorous exam covering learning theory, behavior, training, and more
✅ I have hundreds of hours of hands-on experience
✅ I follow a professional code of ethics and commit to continuing education
✅ I’m accountable to a standard—not just my opinion

I want my clients to feel confident knowing they’re working with someone who takes this work seriously—because your dog is family.

Thank you for trusting me with your pup’s training journey. I’m proud to keep learning, growing, and helping you build the relationship you’ve always wanted with your dog. 💛

I have taught my dogs various skills, but my favorite is teaching them threshold boundaries, aka waiting at doors.

As I packed my car, making several trips with the door open, I found it reassuring that my dogs did not attempt to run out.

Now to train my cat not to run out the door 🙄🤣

"I'll start training once things settle down..."

I hear this often, but here's what many dog owners don't realize:

Waiting to train doesn't just delay progress – it can actually cost you more in the long run.

Consider the real expenses of living with challenging behaviors for another 6 months:

😱 Replacing chewed furniture, shoes, or household items
😱 Buying ineffective (or harmful) equipment that don’t address the root causes
😱 Cleaning services or products for accidents and damage
😱 Missed social opportunities (and memories) because your dog would be a nuisance
😱 Boarding or daycare costs when you can't bring your dog to family events
😱 Health issues like torn nails or broken teeth from anxious chewing
😱 Fixing up your home from the damage (like replacing carpets, doors, or cabinets)

One client recently told me: "I spent more on replacing destroyed items in one year than I did on our entire training program."

Training is an investment with a deeply personal and tangible return.

The skills you and your dog learn now compound over time. These are skills you’ll both use for the rest of your lives.

Every month you wait is another month of:

👉 Habitual behaviors becoming more ingrained
👉 Ineffective solutions draining your budget
👉 Stress and tension within your home escalating
👉 Quality of life compromises affecting your relationship

The simple truth? Effective training pays for itself.

Not through magical quick fixes, but through practical, lasting changes that prevent ongoing costs – both financial and emotional.

Be honest… what’s the hardest thing you’ve ever tried to train your dog?

Loose leash walking? A solid stay? Maybe just getting them to stop stealing your socks?

Training isn’t always easy, and we’ve all been there — share yours in the comments! What was the struggle, and how did it go?
