I see posts about dogs being left outside in harsh weather too long ! Local laws are posted below.

For a quick reference, hopefully never needed.

If you know of anyone leaving their dog(s) in a unheated garage or outdoor dog house let your local police know.

For the first time and hopefully the last time I had to tell people this summer that I would not work with them anymore. I am writing about this in the hopes that reading this after hearing me state the same things will help them and their dog.

This young, healthy energetic medium/large English Setter and Poodle Mix lives his life gated in their average size kitchen.
He barked a lot at me for a bit when I met him. But, thrilled to see me the next time, sweet soul that he is.

He does not go for any walks, I took him on his first two walks he ever went on in 4 years ! He was in his glory and was nicely behaved considering the situation.

His outdoor time exists only of being led on leash to a small paved yard with beautiful plants in the areas with soil. It is very charming, but no where for a dog to romp around.

He then goes back on lead to the kitchen. I was called for training because he guards things that are not his if they fall or if he can get them. Not his food ! I of course being a hands on trainer wanted to experience this guarding right away. It was so clear to me he does this as a game and a activity. He literally has nothing else to do ! I was able to take what he guarded away with some skills and tools. He was serious about keeping it and repeated this a second time. I felt his pain as a prisoner of nowhere to release his energy or his mind.

This was all due to them being protective with him to a damaging and cruel extent. He is not appropriately vaccinated due to more fear of theirs. They are equally afraid of sickness from vaccines and diseases that he can pick up from walking outside.

They have had other dogs before him ! Goldens that lived similarly, but they did not rebel with guarding.

This dog is fed, groomed and housed, yet suffering emotionally. I knew I would not be able to help the dog once I was told not to let him on curb grass while walking him. I also came to realize they had no intention of taking him on walks as I pleaded with them to do at least once a day.

Of all the dogs and different homes, situations and people I came to know this one and one other haunt me. The other one lived a very similiar sad life. He was a beautiful GSD that is gone now. My plea with his owner was for her to hire a dog walker I knew for him or of her choice, she would not. He was super strong, but never looked for trouble with people or other dogs when walking. She was not strong enough to walk the dog and he had a paved yard where he injured his pads playing on it. When I met him he was thin and underfed and she did not know why he had bowl problems. All that resolved with better nutrition I guided her with. His best times were on walks with me and while boarding during play groups when his owner traveled. Two sweet dogs with owners that have no empathy or true connection to what a dog is and needs.

I am thankful every day that as a rule my customers are people that are devoted to giving their dogs what they need to be happy.

I finally put this on my page to help people understand what dogs need to be happy and well emotionally and physically. Outside time on grass in a yard and/or taking daily walks is imperative to their mental health. Leash walking whenever possible is prime time for your dog’s mental stability. I need to be their voice as much as possible on my page.

With the closing of puppy stores in NY please be cautious of who you buy a puppy from online. Most big puppy stores were indeed a major source for puppy mills to stay in business, but the internet is even worse.

If you want a particular breed and a puppy please know decent and responsible breeders will invite you to see where their puppies will be or were born. You should be able to meet their parents as well. These dogs should be treated as their family pets, inside a home with their human family. You may have to wait months for a puppy, this is all normal when breeders are doing the right things.

Some large private shelters have puppies all year. They travel out of the NY area to get them. They are generally mixed breed puppies that are born where people do not sterilize their dogs and they roam free. These puppies wind up in overcrowded shelters in these areas and are at high risk of being euthanized without intervention.

Dogs fill all our local shelters and also foster based rescues daily. They could be very young or seniors, very tiny or very large, puppies are not the usual. They are in desperate need of good homes, overcrowding has become a reality here in NY. These dogs have been given up, abandoned or rescued with various situations. A steady stream of heartbreaking stories never ends.

All dogs need homes, any dog from anywhere can be a great companion animal. Ask questions and feel like you are getting a support system as well. Taking home any dog is work, devotion, but generally years of joy all around if the match is right for your home.

Many rescues take in adult breeder dogs from mills to adopt out. This is a true blessing for these dogs !

Make sure any puppy you are considering does not leave their parents suffering in a mill. Animal lovers are easily capable of stopping the money trail to puppy mills and stopping the pain for dogs. Always beware of anyone or place that has many types of popular breed puppies at once.

Make the match that works for you and your home best. It’s important to know where and why your dog was born. It’s also very important to choose a dog you want a lot and that you can manage.
