Golden Gate Basset Rescue GGBR rescues, restores and rehomes Basset Hounds across northern California. NO PREMISES - WE ARE FOSTER HOME BASED. We exist solely on donations.

As a non-political organization, the views of our Board, volunteers and supporters are personal to those individuals and do not reflect the views of our non-profit. We were formed in 2005 after operating for nearly ten years under the Northern California Basset Hound Club. Today, GGBR is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization. GGBR takes orphaned bassets into foster care, usually in volunteer ho

mes, where they are loved and cared for until permanent, forever homes are found. We provide veterinary care, which includes necessary vaccinations, spaying and neutering, heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention. Our hounds are microchipped with 24PetWatch.com microchips, and when adopted out come with 30 days gift insurance cover courtesy of ShelterCare. Our wonderful volunteers spend time with the dogs to evaluate them, deal with any behavioral issues, and restore them to full health with good food and love.

Meet GGBR’s own New Years Baby! Meet Otis, born on 01/01/2025! You’ll never forget his birthday!



Otis came to GGBR as an owner surrender from the young man who had lovingly raised him since he was 8 weeks old but as Otis got older, his separation anxiety issues did not sit well with the neighbors. Since coming into GGBR and being in a foster home with other dogs, he’s doing much better with this behavior. Otis is a talker tho, & has a beautiful deep Basset voice. He loves to bark when he’s playing with other dogs & when he sees something he wants when he’s walking. His foster family is working on this behavior but some training is still needed.

Speaking of walking, his foster family has always heard about “flat bassets” but never experienced one, until Otis… when he’s done walking or wants to stop, he just flops down… & he’s big guy to get up & moving again, 55 lbs & still has some filling out to do!

Otis is a sweetheart tho. He quickly learned how to use the doggie door & learned about sneaking up onto his foster family’s bed to snuggle at night. He loves to snuggle on the couch & chair with humans & other dogs as well! He takes treats very gently & is not super food motivated (very unusual for a Basset).

Otis would love a furever home with another playful dog & a patient family that will continue his training & able to work with his barking & leash manners/walking/flat basset behaviors! He’s a sweetheart & will be your loyal friend & companion!

The 13th annual Giving Tuesday is on December 2nd this year. You will see lots of appeals for end of year giving to charitable organizations and we hope you will remember GGBR if you plan to give!

We haven’t stopped asking for your donations all year, but the cost of rescuing many hounds is high, and we couldn’t do it without your ongoing dollar support.

This is the start of our Annual appeal for end-of-year donations. As a 501c3, your donations qualify as a tax deduction (of course, seek professional advice). It’s the best way to offset the Required Minimum Distribution from retirement accounts or claim deductions on your tax return.

Checks made payable to GGBR can be mailed to PO Box 4958, Petaluma, CA 94955. Please note your donation with ‘End of Year’ if you can or visit GGBR.org and see the “Donate” tab.

Lovely 6-month-old Bonnie is an affectionate girl with lots of puppy energy! Her breed mix is anyone’s guess, but she is a very attractive puppy. Our guess is that she is a “Bassador” (Lab X basset). She currently weighs just under 40 pounds, but she likely still has some growing to do. Bonnie exhibits typical puppy behavior with some indoor accidents, but is doing well going outside via a doggie door. She will require help with her house training. Bonnie will be spayed 12/12 and will be ready for a new home on 12/19. Because of her high energy level, activity, and puppy mouthiness, small children are not recommended for Bonnie, but older children and/or a young dog playmate would be great!

Thank you to all who came down for the Niles Festival of Lights with their bassets too. It’s a great way to walk off that Thanksgiving meal on the Friday after. Save the date for more fun next year. We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

It’s a glorious start to the Holidays, with a tree lighting, and a display of parade floats with a Holiday theme and lots of lights. Our own Rescue Van is adorned with lights and our brilliant neon sign, and all you need to do is wear your own battery-operated lights as you walk the short route amongst a cheering audience lining the street!

Sharon is an adorable, lively female basset puppy who was surrrendered to GGBR because the owner was not able to afford her veterinary care. She is said to be three months old but she may be younger than that. Sharon is not able to walk because she does not have control of her back legs. She is able to use her front legs to pull herself along, sometime at a surprisingly high rate of speed. She is a happy puppy, unfazed by her disability.
Sharon has been evaluated by a veterinarian who is concerned that Sharon has paralysis of her back legs due to Swimmer Syndrome. Futher evaluation by a neurologist will be scheduled to pursue a definitive diagnosis and a physical therapy program.
We are maintaining hope that now with Sharon being in the care of GGBR she will be able to make progress toward walking. She will receive the benefits of consistent medical care and physical therapy, as well as being in a loving home.
