Golden Gate Basset Rescue GGBR rescues, restores and rehomes Basset Hounds across northern California. NO PREMISES - WE ARE FOSTER HOME BASED. We exist solely on donations.

As a non-political organization, the views of our Board, volunteers and supporters are personal to those individuals and do not reflect the views of our non-profit. We were formed in 2005 after operating for nearly ten years under the Northern California Basset Hound Club. Today, GGBR is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization. GGBR takes orphaned bassets into foster care, usually in volunteer ho

mes, where they are loved and cared for until permanent, forever homes are found. We provide veterinary care, which includes necessary vaccinations, spaying and neutering, heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention. Our hounds are microchipped with 24PetWatch.com microchips, and when adopted out come with 30 days gift insurance cover courtesy of ShelterCare. Our wonderful volunteers spend time with the dogs to evaluate them, deal with any behavioral issues, and restore them to full health with good food and love.

Lilly’s foster parent has this to say about Lilly:

Nine-year-old Lilly is a sweet good natured girl. She would love to have a person of her own. She likes people and gets on with dogs and even cats. Lilly is not much into playing but would rather spend time with her person and on a soft place to land. She likes to be inside and has worked hard on house training but still needs to be watched carefully.
Lilly would be totally devoted to someone who would shower her with love.

Special Needs: Needs help with house training. She is not an eager eater and sometimes needs encouragement to eat her meals.

Olivia has a new home!

Olivia, 1 year old, came to GGBR, along with her brother, from a life where they were strictly outdoor dogs. She is nervous in new settings and siturations, but happy and affectionate at home. She gets along with other dogs. Because of Olivia’s young age and lack of training, she has the normal puppy habits of making chew toys out of everyday household objects, not being reliable about her potty training, and barking when left alone. In the yard, she requires a secure fence and, ideally, supervision, because she is agile and can climb, or dig.

Olivia was recently adopted on 11/10/25 and then returned to GGBR on 1/26/25, because of adopters’ concerns regarding her lack of training and her need for supervision. She is now in her forever home as of March 2nd!

Beautiful 6-year-old Basya (pronounced “Bahs’-ya”) went to her new home. Her name is Russian, and means “Daughter of God.” She is a little shy, but is a very pleasant basset, happy and loves to run and play. Basya came from a situation in which she was kept outdoors and used as a breeder. She can be initially snippy when meeting new dogs, but she usually recovers and is OK with them.

Congratulations Basya!

We have partnered with Freewill.com to provide resources to write a will, health directive, durable power of attorney, living trust, etc., at NO cost to yourself. During the process, you have the opportunity (optional, of course) to include directions for caring for your pets after your passing and to make bequests to any charities you wish.
To help you get started on your plans and legacy for Basset Hounds, you can use FreeWill, an online tool that guides you through creating your will or trust. It’s easy to use, accessible online and can be completed in 20 minutes. You can use this resource on its own or use it to document your wishes before finalizing your plans with an attorney.
Have you already included a gift in your will or trust? If so, there’s a form to let us know! We would love to thank you for your generosity.
Do you have an IRA, 401(k), life insurance policy, or other assets not included in your will? If so, these are called non-probate assets and you must plan your beneficiaries for them separately. Use this online tool to make your plans and designate us as a beneficiary of one or more of these assets. Link to form and more information can be found at https://www.ggbassetrescue.org/info/display?PageID=22143 or simply by going to GGBR.org and clicking on the “donate” tab.
GGBR greatly appreciates your support towards bassets and your consideration in helping our rescue. 💜

Six-year-old Casper is recovering from back surgery and needs a home.

Casper was adopted in September 2024, but a few months after his adoption, he suffered a disc injury and underwent back surgery. He is able to walk now, but is still weak in the hind quarters. He still needs physical therapy treatments and is still gaining control of his potty training.

Unfortunately, Casper’s adopter’s own health makes him unable to keep up with Casper’s rehabilitation. For that reason, he has made the difficult decision that Casper needs a new home.

Full documentation on all of Casper’s medical is available.

Casper would do well as an only dog, but would be good in a home with dogs that have a calm, patient temperament and that don’t stimulate Casper to overdo. He is not good with cats.

If you have a home with no stairs and wish to give Casper the continued treatment he needs and the forever home he deserves, please submit an Adoption Application available under the Adopt tab at GGBR.org. He’s a wonderful dog and is well loved!

Ray Ray is a 1 1/2 year old female who was first placed into a foster to adopt home. Her surrendering owner had said that she would be fine in a home where her foster parents would be gone for long hours. In that home she experienced serious separation anxiety and was put on medication for that condition. She was said to be afraid of other dogs, was timid and fearful of strangers, and didn’t like to play. Ray Ray was moved to a different foster home after one week in the foster to adopt home and she immediately settled in with the other dogs in the home and showed that she is a happy playful youngster.

Update on Nemo January 12:

Extraordinary little 12-week-old Nemo is looking for a home to call his own. He has spent the past month in a wonderful foster home, getting excellent care, nutrition, exercise, physical therapy, and love. He is getting stronger, and the physical therapist is pleased with his progress.

He will need a home that is willing and able to continue his vet visits, rehab exercises, and therapy. Nemo can’t be officially adopted until he is old enough to be neutered, so he will still be considered a “foster dog” until that time. However, that is no reason he couldn’t “foster” in his forever home. While he is a GGBR foster dog, GGBR will cover his vet expenses.

Nemo came to GGBR on December 14 because he could not use his hind legs to walk, but he is making good progress. He has been diagnosed with Swimmer Puppy Syndrome, also known as flat puppy syndrome, which is a rare developmental deformity in newborn puppies that affects their ability to walk or stand. The primary symptom is the splayed-out position of the legs, in Nemo’s case, the rear legs, resembling a swimmer, which prevents the dog from bearing weight.

With physiotherapy throughout the day, massage, taping of the rear legs, and good nutrition, there is hope that he will continue progressing. He has gained a lot of strength in his hips and is now working on developing flexibility in his knees.

Nemo is a special, happy little guy who is determined to walk. He has a wonderful disposition, is friendly and affectionate, and is nearly housebroken with a potty pad. Nemo is great with other dogs and cats and would fit into any home. He sleeps contentedly in a crate.

If you have the time, energy, and a nurturing spirit to help a lovely puppy, Nemo wants to meet you. Nemo is interviewing for a foster or foster-to-adopt home that is willing and able to continue his rehab until he is old enough to be neutered and officially adopted.

In the meantime, even if you can’t foster Nemo, if you can help with the cost of the ongoing veterinary care for his treatment, GGBR and Nemo will appreciate it.

Sadie has a home! She is a three year old spayed female basset hound who is healthy and has a lovley disposition. She gets along with other dogs, chiidren and adults. It is unknown how she relates to cats. When she came into GGBR foster care, after having several moves amongst family members, was timid and suffered from separation anxiety. She has benefitted greatly by living with the Goddard family, and now is able to be left alone with the other dogs in the family without serious reaction on her part.

Golden Gate Basset Rescue relies totally on the generosity of our supporters to carry out the rescue work we do. We ensure that no basset hound in northern California must fear ending up in a shelter. No owner needs to feel desperate because they can no longer care for their hound. We take hounds in and place them in our network of wonderful foster homes that provide warm beds and good food, and GGBR pays all their medical bills to make sure they are in the best health when we match them with their forever homes. Please make your donation today!

Did you know GGBR has a Fidelity Investment account, that can accept non-cash gifts of assets like stocks and bonds? We would like to grow this fund, which assures the future of GGBR not just in this year, but for the long term.

It was quite a year for GGBR with a an extreme hoarder intake of hounds, nine forever fosters and a 9 week-old puppy coming to us with Swimmer Puppy Syndrome as just some of the highlights.
