Puppy ping pong is a fun way to get the whole family practicing puppy recalls 💜
These two cuties learning to both leave it. Working multiple animals at once takes extra observational skills, planning, and quick reflexes. Practice makes perfect. #saratogasprings #fultoncountyny
Snow day for the dogs ❤️ wait until the end to see Hannibal 🤣 #pomeranians #azawakh #broadalbin
I absolutely love teaching puppy class 💜Recalls are such an important skill. My top 3 tips for recalls with puppies: 1. Reward them for coming back! Do not ask for a sit, just feed them or play with them as soon as they return! Asking for another behavior is demotivating to the puppy. You can layer in the extra obedience later. For now we reward!2. Practice in different locations! Take this behavior on the road and use a long line for safety if needed. Remember, the higher the distractions, the higher the reward needs to be, whether it’s food or play.3. Play hide and seek with your puppy. Not only is this fun and a great way to build a better bond, but will reinforce the idea of wanting to look for you #dogtrainingtips #saratogasprings #ballstonspa
Trick class was a lot of fun yesterday. ❤️ Look at Tippy being adorable.
This boy is on 🔥
Getting some nice distance on our obstacles 👍🏻
Hannibal was very skeptical about the treadmill in our first session, by going at his pace and encouraging him he’s now hopping on and off at the lowest setting. Right now it’s mostly about getting on and off safely, He isn’t ready for much duration as it gives him an opportunity to overthink this. I rather keep building his confidence where he’s at then rush him and have him question his trust in me and the process. I want to keep up his enthusiasm for this game 💪🏻👍🏻#dogtrainersofinstagram #dogtraining #saratogasprings #schenectady #pomeraniansofinstagram

You Can't Cure Separation Anxiety with a Crate
If you've been following along with my separation anxiety posts, you know that separation anxiety is not a training issue, it's a medical condition. It is a phobia. A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. In this case, it's being left alone
Crate training will not cure your dog's separation anxiety. Your dog is still being left alone to panic.
In fact, crates can make separation anxiety worse.
Confinement anxiety and separation anxiety are often co-morbid.
For many dogs with separation anxiety, the crate actually will increase the dog's panic.
I'm a huge fan of crate training, every single dog of mine is crate trained and I recommend new puppy owners to get a jump start on getting their pup comfortable with being in a crate. But for a dog with this condition, it's often best to ditch the crate and use an ex pen, or gated off room.

It’s been an inspiring experience here at the Ranch. Today we worked with the alpacas and I got the pleasure of working with Beso the Llama. ❤️

Recall games are a great way to build a strong reinforcement history for coming when called. When in doubt, use a long line for extra security. Abenj(the Azawakh) in the video has great recall but under certain situations can become avoidant about her collar being grabbed. We continue to work on conditioning her to collar grabs and emergency grabs, but for some extra assurance we use the long line.
No shame in the management game 😉
Happy Labor Day everyone!
Hand Targeting with Kai
We've been very busy lately with a new addition to our household. This is Kairat, a 2 month old Taigan. Taigans are the national breed of Kyrgyzstan. There are a total of about 700 left in the world.
One of the first things I teach new puppies is to hand target. This is a valuable skill that aids in training dogs to come when called (recall), and a way to positively move your dog from one spot to another (think off the furniture!).
It's never too late to teach an old dog new tricks so whether you have a puppy or adult dog, they can learn these skills. We have opening for private lessons and group classes right now.
Also available for virtual consults.
