Have you ever gotten something you didn't ask for but later realized that was exactly what you needed most?
.
One day my husband @frontdoordogtrainer brought home an 11 month old crazy ass #doberman and said he needed a new home. He knew I grew up with Doberman's and this breed always has my heart. I had the alot of growing up with 21 Dobies total before my 18th b'day including two litters of pups.
.
This dog was different. He had so much energy even I wasn't in the mood to deal with his behaviors. In truth it wasn't his fault. He was under stimulated and had a lot of drive. I had no intentions on keeping him and told my husband we needed to find him a new home. I was actually still grieving 3 years after the loss of my APBT #bestie of almost 14years. I was firm that I wasn't ready.
.
A few weeks later I was sitting with his original family signing an agreement that he surrendered to us and then filed new AKC papers with my name on it! That is Shaka's adoption story! I'm so thankful for him and needed him more than I realized.

‼️How to prevent your dog from bloating aka gastric dilation volvulus aka GDV bka BLOAT.
.
Bloat in dogs occurs when a dog's stomach fills with gas, food, or fluid, causing it to expand. This can lead to the stomach twisting, which traps the contents and cuts off blood flow. It's a serious condition that requires immediate veterinary care and can lead to DEATH!
.
Common symptoms include a swollen abdomen, restlessness, drooling, attempts to vomit without success, and signs of pain. If you suspect your dog has bloat, seek emergency veterinary help immediately.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MERSI!! 🩷#happybirthday #HBD #doberman
A lot of dogs HATE nail trims‼️
Making nail trims more enjoyable for dogs involves desensitization, positive reinforcement, and a gentle approach.
Start by getting your dog accustomed to having their paws handled.
Use treats and praise to create positive associations with each step of the process. Introducing the clippers or grinder in a non-threatening way, such as letting the dog sniff and explore them, can help reduce fear. Every time your dog touches the trimmers with its nose, give them a small reward like a treat. Trim only a small amount at a time to prevent cutting into the quick, and reward the dog with treats and affection after each successful trim.
By making the experience positive and stress-free, dogs can learn to tolerate, and even enjoy, nail trims over time.

Small dogs benefit from real life training too!
Today we were practicing door manners when guests arrive with Ziggy and Honey.
The doorbell is typically a big trigger for dogs and it cause extra excitement.
Things will only change when you begin to practice something different.

😭 Reels give you 90 seconds to show your BEST and it is leaving a lot of people discouraged.
❌ If you are getting frustrated when your dog makes a mistake, your mindset is wrong!
Social media only wants you to see the good, the beautiful and the PERFECT!
Dogs have not so good moments and people have bad days too.
My dog Nia has practiced this skill 100 times but she has NEVER practiced it in the rain. I leveled up the challenge and had her train in the cold rain.
I wanted to show you what happens every day for professional dog trainers.
Our dogs are not always doing perfect tasks.
Instead of thinking, 🤬"sh*t my dog messed up" I laughed the mistake off, we moved on and tried it again.
Don't spend too much time sweating the small stuff that you don't congratulate on the wins!
She might not have come into a full heel position but she did stay when the dumbbell was tossed. 👏🏽
I've never met a trainer say a dog's skill didn't get better with more repetitions so just keep practicing! #reels #fypシ #dogslife #bestoftheday
Honey is starting to learn a new trick!
This ONE command will keep your dog SAFE!
The "come" command in my opinion is the most important obedience cue! It is more important than sit, stay, down and even leave it. If your dog starts running towards traffic or slips out the door, chasing after him won't make him come to you....begging and pleading won't help much either.
Teach a solid recall before an accident happens. #dogslife
Teaching a dog something new has layers.
• acquisition
• fluency
• generalization
• maintenance
In the acquisition phase, your dog learns the new behavior through repetition and reinforcement. Once they can perform it consistently, they enter the fluency phase, where they become proficient and the behavior becomes more automatic. Generalization occurs when your dog can perform the behavior in different contexts or environments. Finally, maintenance ensures that the behavior persists over time through continued practice and occasional reinforcement.
Each phase is crucial for building a strong foundation and ensuring long-term retention of the desired behavior. #reels #fypシ

💥👉🏽 UNEDITED VIDEO👈🏽 💥
I didn't edit this video because it is important for you to see that THINGS TAKE TIME!
This is my 5th session with Carbon and his family where we are working on leash manners and engagement.
Carbon's family described his walks of being more like a battle of Tug-of-War.
It was like holding your breath hoping no other person was out walking their dog. Carbon didn't offer any check ins, was tense, stressed and anxious the entire time. Nothing was pleasant about his walks and they didn't get to enjoy going around their beautiful neighborhood.
During our first few weeks worked on building engagement (think eye contact) through games, exercises and
leveled up his current training skills.
Now look at Carbon and his guardian! They are working together and are both more relaxed. You can even hear how excited his family is with his progress!!
Take the first step in changing your dog's life and contact me! #bestoftheday
If you build value in the cue, the cue will work. #reelschallenge #reels
Did you volunteer for a game of Tug-of-War? Or would you rather enjoy a game of Follow The Leader?
When your dog turns into a leash-pulling fanatic, you become the unintentional opponent. A task that is meant to build a bond with your dog has turned into a workout you didn't sign up for. So, let's keep it classy and teach them some leash etiquette for a smoother stroll. This applies to dogs of EVERY size. #yorkie #riseandshine #petsofinstagram #petfriendly
Met with my clients to help their dog gain more confidence through environmental exposure. One big thing that is important to me is that YOU know how to effectively communicate with your dog because if your dog only responds to me, what's the point?
.
This adolescent, intact male Labrador is trying to lead his owner to the right so he can mark on the flower bed wall. Marking is a natural behavior but in this type of public setting I discourage it. My client did a great job using the leash and slight spatial pressure from her left leg to communicate with her dog the direction he should be walking.
Another great day of training! #facebook #bestfriend #rva #instagood #saturday
My client is in his mid 70's and has been diligent working with me to help his young Labrador Retriever be better equipped for the real world.
WHEN YOUR DOG IS READY, meaning you've set the foundations of training and your dog is emotionally ready without showing signs of fear or insecurity, then you can gradually expose them to a new store environment. Layer what they know with a high value reward to practice leash manners, obedience and ensure they are comfortable around people and various stimuli. Consistent training will help create a well-behaved shopping companion.

🐶 ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
These seemingly simple activities bring joy and health benefits, making chewing and scavenging not just play but an integral part of holistic enrichment.
Chewing and scavenging are vital elements (and normal dog behaviors) in enhancing your dog's physical and mental well-being. When my girl Nia here tackles his favorite chew toy, a beef collagen roll, there's more happening than meets the eye. The rhythmic gnawing not only keeps her dental health in check but also acts as a stress-buster. On the scavenging front, hide-and-seek games with treats hidden in the wobble ball turn into a thrilling adventure for Shake. Watching him use his keen sense of smell to track down those hidden goodies isn't just heartwarming; it's a mental workout that leaves him content and relaxed.
It takes more than a walk or run to help my dogs (and most dogs) have a sense of fulfillment. That's why it is important to add at least one enrichment activity to your dog's day.
Otto retained his training 10 months later because it is now effective communication and a synergistic relationship. What you don't see in this clip is how I helped show my client the best and safest way to hold the leash. It's all about understanding, training AND good coaching.
