This week I worked with Suzanne and her 6 month old Airedale Terrier, Remy, at Home Depot.

I will only ever take dogs on training field trips if I believe they are ready for them.

This training field is important for Remy because she is a strong candidate as a future therapy dog. Her disposition is calm yet attentive to her handler. She was also confident the new environment, sights and sounds instead of shying away.

As luck would have it, we met a nurse from a local hospital (in the picture) that was very impressed with Remy's training and she will be sending us a contact to get Remy public access in a hospital for training!

Vision was adopted by his new family and they contacted me to immediately start with his training. One of his biggest issues at his previous home was he was marking on furniture and walls. I helped Visions's new family create a daily schedule including a potty routine, feeding schedule (there are many reasons I don't suggest free feeding), management tips and how to incorporate play to build a better relationship.

I'm so happy to say Vision hasn't had any accidents in his new home and is enjoying more freedom! Beautiful things will happen when the plan is followed.

🚨‼️IF THE GROUND IS TOO HOT FOR YOUR HAND, IT IS TOO HOT FOR YOUR DOG'S PAWS!!

Dogs can suffer from SEVERE burns when walking on hot ground!

This includes at the beach! You might think it is cute when your dog digs a hole in thE sand but the reality is they are trying to find a cool spot.

To prevent burns, it's important to avoid walking dogs on hot surfaces such as asphalt or sand during the peak heat of the day.

In case you've missed the news, I decided to launch our first Veterinary Science Summer Camp!

This has been a great first week with some really awesome kids. Some projects our group has worked on during the week so far have been learning animal anatomy, administering mock injections with banana patients, learning dog behavior and emergency pet first aid. I truly wish something like this was around when I was a kid but then again not having access to something like this is probably what propelled me to learn as much as I could on my own!

Special thanks to my two teen helpers this week, our daughter Rayne and her friend Kennedy!

Only two dogs in this picture are my personal dogs. The other three, Lady, Rocco and Jack, all come from different families. I love it when my previous students pay me a visit and I see the training I did with each dog is still holding strong!

🇺🇸🇺🇲🇺🇸 MEMORIAL DAY is a day of full of gratitude with reflection and remembrance. Growing up in a military family, I saw the true meaning of sacrifice and service. On this day, we honor the brave men and women who gave everything for our country. They are more than names on a monument; they are our heroes, our loved ones, our friends.

I am looking over my photo album and seeing pictures of my clients with their dogs. I love the work that I do!
I started training dogs professionally in 2008.
It's not just about training dogs.
It's not just about sequencing commands together.
To me it's about meeting clients where they are with their dogs and helping them grow the relationship with their dog.
It's about learning and understanding that each client and their dog has individual needs.
It's not about rushing the process for quick results while jeopardizing the relationship. I'll always show people communicating with their own dogs.

It's about YOU and YOUR dog first, ALWAYS!

Enjoying time with the dogs is definitely a dopamine kick!

The process of working with a dog aggressive dog is long but in the end, it is so rewarding!

When I met Carbon I met a dog that was a ball of energy to most people, was apprehensive around men and completely saw all dogs as a red flag.

I learned he had a pretty traumatic start to life with scars around his neck that will last his lifetime.

His biggest triggers were dogs at any distance. He came outside ready for a battle. It was so much of a challenge for his owners that they either limited his walks to behind their house or would try to walk him during none peak times. This is a great management option when you don't know how to handle a situation.

We started with refreshing some foundational obedience and through some conditioning and positive reinforcement Carbon learned different behaviors are most acceptable. This allowed for better communication between Carbon and his family.

After a few sessions it was time to help Carbon change his response to a trigger. It's not just about emotions or feelings, it is about a dog's nervous system.

The brain, through the limbic system, plays a key role in assessing the emotional significance of a trigger and determining whether it represents a threat. The sympathetic nervous system releases stress hormones that initiate a biological "fight or flight" response. Once the threat has passed, the parasympathetic nervous system works to calm the dog down, reducing heart rate, respiration, and returning bodily functions to a normal state.

Starting out, we maintained a distance that felt safe to Carbon and gradually closed that gap in time. I'm talking about going from 80yards to 60yards to 30 yards and so on only moving to the next stage based on Carbon's response. You don't box a dog with behavior like Carbon's in a corner and hope for the best.

I don't have a lot of first day videos because honestly I'm there to help the dog and families, not to get content. This case was about keeping everyone safe. There where challenging times.

During our last session was the first time Carbon was not triggered by a dog. He was more relaxed than ever! It was the first time his family got to see the relaxed, happy Carbon and we all had a smile on our faces!

The Doberman Pinscher has always held a special place in my heart since I was 2 years old. In my lifetime I had the experience of living with 11 Dobermans, including two litters of 11 and 4 and on time!

To me, the Doberman is the ultimate family guardian with a heart of gold. With their sleek, muscular frame and keen intelligence, Dobermans are not just protectors, but also affectionate companions. They are the only dog specifically created solely to protect people and are also considered a velcro dog with its family. From playtime with the kids to lounging with the parents, these loyal dogs excel at fitting seamlessly into family life. With proper training and socialization, they become devoted protectors and beloved members of the household.

Enzo, the German Shepherd, has not had the opportunity to interact with another dog since he was a pup. 😢 This week we had a great off leash obedience session followed by free play where he benefited from learning skills like respect of boundaries and manners! Nia, the Doberman, is another one of my personal dogs that is great at helping dogs develop their K9 skills. 🩷🐾

Sharing a beautiful moment between Christopher and his companion Pancha as they work together on the loose leash walking skills.

The #1 tool to have is a leash or long line.

The leash is a line of communication between you and your dog, conveying cues, commands, and signals. Think of it like a bridge. It's not just about control but also about establishing a connection and guiding your dog's behavior through subtle movements, tension, and releases. For example, a slight tug on the leash can indicate a change in direction or a pause in movement, helping to direct your dog's attention and behavior.

Some would say this is a face only a mother could love (because of the drool) I have to say Linc holds a soft spot in my heart! Even though he has completed his training with me I get to see him every so often.

Great Danes are great dogs!
