Ellie is the best helper during her groom. When she is in the bath, she turns herself from one side to the other when she thinks I am done shampooing one side and ready for the next. She’s spot on, it’s very impressive and ridiculously adorable. Such a Golden :)

Many of you have probably read about the uptick in the Canine Respiratory virus here in Colorado. It is scary stuff! As a small grooming facility with only one dog or family of dogs coming in at a time, your dog will not be in contact with any other dogs which is how the virus is spread. All grooming tools and surfaces are disinfected with Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide which is the same cleaner and disinfectant used in hospitals and top notch veterinary hospitals. At 13 years young, Natiri is a part of the Silver Muzzle Club at The Best Paw Forward. Grooming can be hard on these older pups. Natiri is allowed to sit, stand, lay down or whatever she’d like to do to feel comfortable at all times. She receives the extra time and care needed for her to feel safe and comfortable. Now she gets to head home, feeling clean and beautiful and rest in the sun for the rest of this gorgeous afternoon.

Kumba came to The Best Paw Forward after having a negative experience with his last groomer. I never know what to expect after I hear that information. It always breaks my heart to see such a sweet dog mishandled. I went slow and let Kumba share what he was comfortable with. Trust is key to a successful groom and a successful relationship. Kumba did fabulous today and I was even treated to some serious snuggles! He did perfect and I’m so proud to return him happy and feeling confident. Good boy Kumba!
Oliver made it through his first haircut! He did an amazing job. So proud of how far he has come with the help of his parents to get more comfortable with the sound of the clippers. Way to go!

Meet beautiful Reba. She had a few scary experiences with grooming and was a bit apprehensive when she arrived. I think I won her over with my talent for butt rubs in the bath! A few butt rubs and we became fast friends. I absolutely love gaining a dog’s trust. Such a reward. Reba+Melissa=Friends :)

Welcome to the family Luna! First time at the grooming shop. Luna is a little spitfire and wasn’t a big fan of restraint of any kind so she needed a soft approach and lots of flexibility with breaks and movement to get some of her hair tamed today! She left with a new best friend and a very positive experience for her first groom. Way to go Luna!
Sweet Bella came in for her first groom this morning at just shy of 3 lbs. She was just rehomed due to negligence and she hit the jackpot with her new family. It can be tough when a puppy is really matted for their first groom because it’s really important to get all the matting out but still have compassion for how scary clippers are to a little baby, especially when they are bigger than her! Bella left happy and just as sweet as she came in but much more comfortable without all those uncomfortable matts pulling on her delicate skin. Way to go Bella! 3 pounds of courage and love!
Maxx is an older gentleman. He has some arthritis and likes to be able to lay down and take rests, as needed, while being groomed. That is something I can happily and easily do for Maxx due to the fact that The Best Paw Forward is a small shop that only grooms one dog or family of dogs at a time. I loved ending my work week with sweet Haley. It was her first time being groomed and she has some anxiety which is pretty normal for her breed, in my opinion. Border Collie’s are super smart and never ever forget-especially trauma, so I went very slow with this beautiful girl ensuring that she could process each step and understand I wasn’t there to hurt her. She did really great for her first time. Way to go Haley!
Did you know I groom stuffed animals as well as dogs? Lol. Nice to see you again sweet Jax.
I got the pleasure of meeting sweet Ellie for the first time today. She just moved to Montrose as well! Ellie has had some poor experiences at the groomer and showed a good amount of anxiety today especially with the dryer. Fortunately at The Best Paw Forward, I am set up to make grooming as comfortable as possible for these type of pups and go nice and slow to help to gain trust. Ellie left more confident and looking gorgeous. Looking forward to her next visit!

This is what a happy, trusting puppy looks like when properly being introduced to a grooming dryer. An intentionally small and quiet dryer is used for at least the first few visits for any puppy in order to gain their trust and limit their fear level. Most dogs who hate going to the groomer were improperly and impatiently introduced to a high velocity dryer. Patience pays off.

It just makes my heart so happy when a pup feels this comfortable and excited to be at the salon. Falcor sees the farm, on his way here, and gets so excited in the car and then explodes with energy when he jumps out!
