Back on Track 🎵 Lyrics by Becca Anderson 🎤 Performed by Nicolette the dog (with a little assist from my daughter 😉) - Back on Track - When your dog goes off the track, Take a breath and step on back, Keep a loose leash, play a game, Get a focused thinking brain, When your dog is checking in, Now start training once again - I’ve been pulling these lyrics together here and there today and yesterday because I wanted to make a fun way to highlight what we do when our dogs are distracted in any way. These lyrics are a simple way to highlight some key points like staying calm (breathing and keeping the leash loose), playing games (Up and Down, LMTR, find it, etc), and going back to whatever training you were doing once your dog is refocused and attentive. After I had this version written down, I sang it to my kids, and well…the video evolved from there 😂 Hope it can help you even a smidgeon in your dog training adventures. Please enjoy!

I have been using Google Gemini (AI) with some business feedback lately. It’s been amazingly helpful, and I now feel like I have a new BFF 😂 But in all seriousness, I kept noticing that Gemini would bring up positive reinforcement here and there, even if that’s not what I was asking about.

Intrigued, I decided to just ask about its take on positive reinforcement training, and this is the response I got. I let my husband read it, and he said that sounds just like what I always talk about (although we agreed that the AI is much more eloquent 😅).

But today, these moments with a non living entity felt profound. And hopeful. So hopeful because maybe someday in some kind of future, all the world will know and understand what this artificial intelligence database already comprehends explicitly: positive reinforcement dog training is what’s best for dogs.

Team Lyla ended 2024 with a huge achievement: graduating from our R+R program 🥳

Our R+R program is for dogs who are further along the reactive scale. Our goal is to help them become more confident and/or calm around other dogs. (And sometimes additional triggers.) Correctly reconditioning innate responses or learned behaviors with a long reinforcement history takes a significant of consistency, accuracy, and effort - but is so beneficial in the long run.

When Lyla was adopted by her family, she was so distracted by dogs that she struggled to disengage and concentrate on anything but frantically wanting to play. This came out in some big behaviors that some may have labeled as unmanageable and untrainable.

However, Lyla lucked out with her family and they committed to helping her learn to better regulate emotions, recover more quickly when going over threshold, and find calmness without shutting her down using aversive methods.

With lots of practice using both operant and classical conditioning via positive reinforcement, Team Lyla has made significant progress on moving down the reactive scale and learned strong life skills. Because of their hard work, I am happy to announce this team is now ready to transition into standard classes.

A big congratulations to Team Lyla! 👏

I am happy to announce I finished off another learning course! This time I worked on the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) Puppy Start Right Program. 🎓

While not nearly as intensive as some of the other courses I’ve taken (Susan Friedman’s Behavior Works was 😅😱🤯), it was still a great supplement to my current knowledge base.

Looking forward to some new things in the future 🙌

Congratulations to Team Ruby for passing Level Orange! 🎉🍊🙌

Level Orange is the final step of five levels and is the culmination of months and months of consistent effort. Team Ruby have worked hard to earn this certificate. 🎓

Ruby has made strong strides with disengagement from the environment and more focus on humans - which are huge achievements and the foundation for most other skills! She has also worked hard on leash walking skills, being more comfortable around strangers, grooming comfort, and more. 🐾

Watching teams grow together is one of my favorite parts about dog training. I love seeing Ruby’s human (Carlyn) learn more about not only training her own personal dogs, but also about training a variety of other dogs while also building her knowledge base of both theoretical and practical canine behavior. 📝

Congrats again to Team Ruby! 🧡

At Clementine Dog Training, We Nurture Success

It's no secret that dog training requires work. Some pet owners take obedience classes because they enjoy the challenge, time, and patience it takes to learn about behavior modification while simultaneously applying these principals to the dog they're training. For other pet parents, time is spent elsewhere and they are happy to let an experienced trainer take the reins through day train and board & train programs. Both options - owner or professional driven training - can be equally effective depending on your lifestyle and time availability. But one thing both groups can agree on: dogs need to be trained. So take a look at yourself and select the style that works best for you, knowing that with the help of Clementine Dog Training, you will be on your way to a fresh and harmonious future with your dog.
