This November, we’ve been observing NATIONAL PET CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. Just like humans, pets benefit greatly from regular wellness screenings to catch issues early. Prevention is key. The median age of cancer diagnosis in a pure-breed dog is 8 years old, versus a mixed breed at 9.5 years old. Giant breeds like a mastiff have a median diagnosis at age 5 compared with Irish Wolfhounds and St. Bernards at age 6! Statistics show that spaying and neutering your pet can delay the median diagnosis by a year or more. Other breeds at higher risk:
German Shepard
Bernese Mountain Dog
Golden Retriever
Swiss Mountain Dog
There are many new tests out there that claim to identify cancer markers; however, those tests cannot diagnose cancer or determine the type of cancer. Those days are hopefully coming, but at this time, technology is not as reliable as we veterinarians would like it to be.
When it comes to checking for cancer, it starts with an annual physical exam by your veterinarian and early screenings with bloodwork, x-rays, and ultrasound. If you want to be more proactive, ask Dr. Napolitano about the Nu.Q test for cancer markers that is available at the laboratories we use. It can easily be added to any wellness panel for added screening.
Wellness tips for pet parents:
· Elect annual bloodwork (starting at the time of spaying and neutering).
· Urinalysis, ultrasound, and X-rays two years before the median age of your pet's potential diagnosis age.
· Breed-specific screenings. Some breeds need earlier screenings than others.
· At -home touch checks — feel for any new lumps or bumps.
