Chickens are highly susceptible to heat stress, especially during the summer months. However, if you’re keeping them correctly, you will know how to spot signs of heat stress and act quickly. Be sure to supply the birds with plenty of water throughout any kind of weather and don’t house them near elements such as heaters or radiators, which can overheat.

When summer rolls around and temperatures start rising, it’s important to make sure that your chickens are safe and comfortable.

Here are some of the most common heat stress signs in chickens:

🐔 Panting & Rapid Breathing - Chickens pant by opening their beaks and inhaling quickly. As early symptoms of heat stress, look for panting and rapid breathing.

🐔 Pale Comb & Wattles - Because the combs and wattles are a chicken's only direct skin-to-air contact points, a lot of additional body heat escapes through them. The skin may become paler as a result of the heat dissipation. Your chicken's body temperature will be better controlled if the wattles and comb are kept cool.

🐔 Wings Outstretched - When hens become too hot, they will spread their wings and lift their feathers in the hopes of catching a breeze.

🐔 Decreased in eating and increased in drinking water. A chicken may eat less if it is under more severe heat stress.

Make sure to provide plenty of water and shade so your chickens can stay hydrated and cool in warmer months.

Don't let the summer heat get the best of your flock! Here is a simple guide to keeping your chickens cool until they acclimate to the summer season.

Chickens thrive at temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (~20-25 Celsius) so you'll need to do a few things throughout the summer to ensure your chickens are kept cool.

🐔 You should provide a shaded area for your flock to rest on hot days. This is one of the simplest yet most critical steps. Our flock loves hanging out beneath the shade of our yard's trees. If the majority of your chicken run space is sunny, and you have no natural shade spots, offer additional shade by putting a black shade cloth over it. Additionally, you may rope one of the cool shade canopies between posts, fences, or trees.

🐔 Hens need a constant supply of cold fresh water. One of the additions to the water could be extra ice in the waterer. If you don't want to use ice, you may alternatively use frozen fruit or veggies and give it to your birds as a refreshing and cooling treat. Just make sure the waterers are kept out of direct sunlight.
