Harlows Heroes has chosen Man Cave Zone Custom Carving to create these Police K9 plaques that they will be giving to the handlers and/or police Departments of falling or retired K9’s. This is a great local organization that provides support to retired K-9 units as well as fundraises for the specific needs of k9 handlers, K-9 units or in other specific times of need. They also provide photography of the K9’s and training graduates. I know times are financially challenging for many, but if you can send a couple of dollars their way it would be very much appreciated and it will go to a great cause. This is the first of many and has been giving to the handler of K9 Broko who was killed in the line of duty by the suspect in Stonington CT recently.

When training a new behavior, always start in an environment with little to no distractions. Slowly, over time, build up to bigger, more enticing distractions. Make sure that your rewards match the level of the distraction. The bigger the distraction, the higher value the reward should be. 🐶

Motivations are Rewards for your dog. A dog will not work for you just to make you happy. They will work for whatever works for them, hence the positive reinforcement.

Think of it as a paycheck. You go to work to get a paycheck to make a living. That is your motivation to go to work everyday. Rewards are a dog's paycheck. This is their Motivation to work for you, so they can get their reward, their paycheck.

Most commonly used rewards are treats, food rewards. Anything that your dog loves can be considered a reward, such as affection, throwing a ball, or going outside.

A dog's Motivation will change depending on the distraction and location. The harder they need to focus on you to work, the higher value the reward must be. 🐶

Harlows Heroes is a CT Based charity that supports Retired K9 Units. The founder, Krista, organized the charity as she saw a need for resources for K9 Officers that gave their entire lives to agencies to ensure that we live a safer one. Our main source of donations comes from private donations, our by donation only end of life Pet Sessions, Hero of the Month fundraisers, donation boxes & Merchandise Sales. In addition to supporting retired K-9 units, we offer free shoots for all K9 officers and their handlers, current and retired. All donations go directly to support Retired K9 units for medical care, medication, special food or equipment they might need to make sure the retirement they earned is as enjoyable as possible. Thank you so much for your consideration, it is because of you that we will be able to help more deserving K9’s.

Curious about the badge number you see everywhere? #9532 is a number that will forever be associated with Harlows Heroes. K9 Barrett #9532 was Montville Police’s first patrol dog, and he was the very reason we started Harlows Heroes. In 2021 K9 Barrett apprehended a fleeing felon who was in possession of an illegal firearm. During this incident, the suspect struck K9 Barrett in the head and face multiple times. Subsequently, K9 Barrett developed a brain bleed which led to seizures. While they were originally optimistic that medication could clear the bleed, his family and handler was given the devastating news that the medication wasn’t working and the brain bleed had tripled in size. Due to that, his diagnosis was then deemed fatal and he was only given weeks to live. Since their graduation, the team had 103 successful deployments for locating narcotics, fi****ms, wanted suspects and missing individuals. K9 Barrett was awarded a Medal of Bravery by the Connecticut State Police for his part in apprehending the felon back in 2021. He was also awarded AKC's DOGNY Paw of Courage Award. In addition, K9 Barrett was the third police working dog in the nation to be saved by Narcan. Prior to K9 Barrett being given the fatal diagnosis, we organized Harlows Heroes with K9 Barrett being the first dog we would support, as he was our town's Patrol Dog. We were lucky enough to see him frequently at events, schools, camps, farmers markets alike. There wasn't a K9 or rather K9 team more deserving of our support and we wanted to be able to see that through. Now that he won’t ever be able to get to enjoy his retirement, we wanted a way to honor K9 Barrett as he is the reason other K9 units will be able to receive the support he inspired us to provide. We will be with him and all our brave K9 units, “Till the End of Watch"

“Although his tour of duty is growing short, K9 Barrett continues to report to work, eager to serve the citizens of Montville and our neighboring communities. Officers Witts and K9 Barrett are a team that continually acted in the highest tradition of the Connecticut State Police and the Montville Police Department. He will be sorely missed.” -Montville Police Department

Our beloved K9 Barrett was honorably laid to rest on June 1st, 2023.

Forever #9532

Dogs use more of their brain for smelling!

10 to 15 minute Nosework Games will keep your dog busy and tire them out quicker than physical exercise. This is especially helpful on days when it's too cold or too hot outside.

The part of the dog's brain that is devoted to scent is proportionally 40 times greater than a human. Smell is a dog's primary sense for experiencing the world around them. It is similar to how human eyes can see in 3 dimensions, dogs can smell in 3D!

Nosework (mental) exercise will tire your dog out more than physical exercise. It is important that your dog has both physical and mental exercise in their life.

Call or email me to set up a 4 week private training session in your home. Learn how to teach your dog to use their nose to find their toys, dinner, treats, and more!

Most trainers can charge a thousand dollars or more for in home private sessions. My prices are amongst the lowest you'll find in Rhode Island.

My packages include free Zoom/FaceTime if needed in between sessions, 20% off one 1-hour in person follow-up visit after your last session, and ongoing phone/email support to help you succeed with your training goals!

Short 5 to 10 minute training sessions throughout the day are more beneficial to your dog than long training sessions. It is much easier, less frustrating, and more fun for your dog to train in shorter sessions.

What is Motivation for a dog? Motivation is anything that your dog loves and finds rewarding! Food, balls, car rides, toys, access to other dogs/smells/the outside, etc. You can use any of these motivators as a reward for your dog while training.

It's National Train Your Dog Month! 🐶

PAWSitive Paws 🐾 is a member of the APDT and follows LIMA guidelines. Our dog training sessions are amongst the lowest prices that you will find in Rhode Island. Email or call me for more information. 🐕

It's National Train Your Dog Month, and choosing the right dog trainer is one of the most important things you can do for your four legged family member. Why choose a LIMA trainer? If you Google “dog trainers,” a lot of different “types” will pop up. Force-free. Balanced. Positive Reinforcement. Punishment. Science-based. The list is long, and there’s no common standard. Anyone can call themselves a dog trainer in the US, and anyone can define themselves with whatever term they want – regardless of their training methods!

Because of this, organizations like the APDT have set professional standards for membership using LIMA.

LIMA stands for “Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive.” It’s a standard for professionals that ensures trainers are always starting with positive reinforcement methods with the lowest chance of negative side effects. A LIMA trainer should be focused on effective training that keeps a close eye on the emotional and physical well-being of the dog.

It’s hard to navigate the flood of information on dog training information on social media, and looking for trainers who practice LIMA methods gives you a focusing point for finding trainers who know how to train your dog effectively without harming them.

Use the APDT trainer search at locateatrainer.org to find LIMA trainers, and find out more about the APDT’s position on LIMA here: https://apdt.com/about/about-lima/

Please join me in saying Happy 1st Birthday to this sweet, gorgeous girl, Bella!! She is such a sweet and playful love bug!! I'm so proud of her progress with loose leash walking! Her paw-rents have done an incredible job with learning how to "speak dog" in order to communicate what manners are expected during their walks! Keep up the great work guys! ❤️🎂🥳😍🥰

A Message from the Rhode Island Department of Health --Humane Transportation of K9 Partners:

"Late last summer of 2022, RI Gen. Law §4-19-23, Humane Transportation of K9 Partners, was passed. The Rhode Island Department of Health, Center for Emergency Medical Services has been working diligently to organize and establish all necessary parameters to make this new venture as successful as possible.

The statue states that EMS personnel will be able to treat and transport injured, on-duty, police K9 partners. If treatment is required, it will be basic life support only. Fire/EMS departments must choose to opt-in and complete all RIDOH approved courses, in order to be cleared to treat and transport any injured police K9 partner.

RIDOH has established a State K9 Committee, drafted the K9 treatment and transportation protocols for EMS personnel, established the approved Emergency Veterinary Hospitals where EMS may transport injured K9 partners, and is currently working on the educational courses that will be provided to the Fire/EMS departments.

We appreciate our veterinary community and understand that individual police, fire, and EMS personnel have been contacting local veterinary hospitals to establish guidelines for their community, unbeknownst to them, that protocols, guidelines, and trainings are well underway.

Please direct any inquiries that you receive to Michelle Calouro, NRP at the RI Department of Health, Center for Emergency Medical Services, at [email protected]"
