While no one is ever 100% ready (especially with how the cat distribution system works!), and that’s okay, it’s important to acknowledge where you’re at mentally, emotionally, and financially so that you can realistically commit to the love of your best furr-iend.

Adopting a cat means becoming a guardian, not just an owner. It’s important to acknowledge that cat guardianship will have times when patience (like, a LOT) is needed. Additionally, caring for your cat can cause financial burdens, which takes its own mental toll.

We say this not to deter any potential cat adoptees but to bring light to the realistic responsibilities and challenges cat parents may face so that we can avoid cats being abandoned and neglected. Being your cat’s guardian is a lifetime commitment to them.

Ever wondered exactly what catnip is?

Let's talk catnatomy real quick. ➡️ Cats have an extra scent organ in the roof of their mouth called the vomeronasal gland. Scents collected in the nose and mouth are carried to the brain through this pathway, which is why cats can be extra sensitive to certain odors.

Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, is a common herb and a member of the mint family. It contains an oil called nepetalactone that causes behavioral changes in cats when they smell catnip. These behaviors can include overt signs of affection, relaxation, and happiness. Other cats display more active behaviors like playfulness and in some cases, aggression.

Why these behaviors? Well, catnip mimics feline s*x hormones. Therefore, a sniff of catnip being processed by that vomeronasal gland causes cats to display behaviors similar to those of a female cat in heat despite the cat's gender.

Catnip can also be an effective tool to relieve things like separation anxiety or to simply let your cat have some fun and relaxation time.
