The last couple of weeks of cold weather have me about going nuts- I finally tried baking a loaf of sourdough. Other than the charred bottom, it turned out pretty good for a first try.

I've never been happier to see a new year. 2023 was hard and I knew it would be going into it, though I didn't know it would be less than 2 weeks before I lost my mom and business partner to cancer. The rest of the year was a lot of working through grief and figuring out how life looked without her.

I ended the year celebrating my birthday with a cake I made myself- buttermilk with blueberry filling made from berries I picked this summer, decorated with dried flowers from my garden. It's not the prettiest cake ever but it was what I wanted and it tasted good.

Looking forward to getting out of survival mode and doing some fun things in 2024!

Dug about a quarter of the dahlia tubers this weekend, the dogs both kept an eye on process. Dad helped with labeling as I pulled them out so it was a whole family thing 😆

Waiting another week to dig more since we aren't experiencing extra cold weather yet and it can be hard to store them with our dry climate.

One last handful of flowers before the frost takes them. I'm ready for the break, but I'll miss the beautiful blooms.

October 3rd is our average first frost date. The flowers are still going strong, the tiny bit of frost over the weekend didn't seem to affect them, but the killing frost will come. I'm ready for the change, even though I'll miss the flowers.

Even though I have sunflowers blooming almost all summer, they feel like a fall flower to me. I'm noticing the earlier sunsets and I know the leaves will be turning before I know it.

Dill is such an interesting addition to a bouquet. The scent can be overwhelming, however, the color and texture is so distinct and I love it. Plus, the smell of dill reminds me of my grandma and her homemade pickles.

A few days ago I flopped next to my dog under the tree in our front yard and as the wind moved the branches the sun would peak through with dazzling rays. It was amazing.

The first dahlia bud... now we wait for it to bloom. Hopefully all the dahlias decide to start flowering soon, I have about 12 new varieties that I'm excited to see 🤩 and share 💐

I picked purple poppy pods today for drying. The dahlias are starting to take off and I'm going to be harvesting lavender the next few days.

Happy Spring Equinox! Spring has sprung, at least in the tiniest of ways. Picked some violets from the backyard, my vintage orange counters really adds to the picture 😆

Did you know violets are edible? I brought violet jam back from France in high school as a gift to my mom. I'm trying to get enough to make some jelly for myself, but gosh they are tiny!
