This little guy is Edgar. He is a 1 and a half year old Dachshund/ Blue Heeler mix. His top two favorite activities are fetch and “touch”.

With focused pups like Edgar touch (or nose targeting) can be used to help teach behaviors like heel, recall, or fun tricks like weaving between your legs.

With Edgars training our focus was solidifying his impulse control and cues like leave it, out, heel, come and a handful of others. All to make life with new small family members a bit more manageable, safe and less stressful for everyone.

Meet Bowie! He is a 2 year old Sheepdog / Poodle mix with tons of personality and enough energy for everyone. His owners needed some help with balancing Bowie’s energy level.

By using impulse control exercises as well as attention and focus exercises, we were able to help him learn to display calm behaviors rather than jumping up. This way Bowie has appropriate times to romp off his energy. But he is capable of displaying calm behaviors naturally in hopes of toys, treats or praise.

Pictured below is Bowie with a fresh cut.

What exactly is "Clicker Training" and how do I start?

Clicker training is also known as mark and reward which is a form of positive reinforcement training that is proven more effective. The clicker is a valuable training tool that communicates exactly what is being rewarded.

The "click" is what we use to mark the exact behavior we want to see and the timing of the click is essential to communicate that what the dog did is correct. Following up immediately with a treat is the reward for the behavior.

After the "click" has been repeatedly associated with a reward the dog wants, the clicker takes the place of a conditioned reinforcer. When your dog understands what the clicker is communicating they will be more willing to repeat behaviors that get them what they want such as treats, praise and, toys.

Well how do you condition a dog to the sound of a "click"?

Starting out is really easy! Have about 15 pea sized treats readily available and a clicker in hand.

With your dog facing you give a "click" and reward immediately. Repeat this until all of the treats are gone.

All you want to do with this first step is introduce your dog to what a "click" means. ("click" = reward)

The importance of coming when called and some tips for good recall!

The ability to attain your dogs focus when off leash is an amazing tool for many reasons. Some important situations for good recall include. another dog on the loose that may not be friendly and potentially attack if your dog runs up to it, leaving the dog park quickly and easily, as well as being able to get a response from your dog if they slip their collar/harness.

Some starter tips from our trainer:

~When building good recall during the beginning phase it is important to start with calling their name and rewarding them for their attention as soon as their focus is on you. It is a great way to practice getting your dogs attention when distracted in your home or outdoors. Just remember it takes patience and practice.

~It is also important to remember that when you are going to do something your dog doesn't enjoy such as a bath, nail trims etc. you do not want to call your dog to you. Calling them to a situation they will not enjoy will encourage them to not listen to their name or "come" because they are expecting something negative.

Notice how in the video Lucy responds to her name even when on a very distracting beach with many crazy sounds and smells with a very large distance from our trainer. This is a great example of an intermediate response to good recall. It takes time and practice but any dog can achieve great recall.
