I try all the new stuff out on my personal babies first before I bring things into the shop. This is Kiki. I picked up the new bouquet’s of herbs and flowers from Jason crean Biodiversity line. Juney out for a meet and greet. This young man says African Grey's are his favorite bird and plans to get one when he is older. He had a surprisingly strong knowledge of proper husbandry. Always nice to see future generations of advocates.

Some of you might remember Markai, our beloved African Grey that was confiscated by inspectors a few months back. Markai was found in a scrap yard where he was being kept in less than satisfactory circumstances. When inspectors found Markai, he barely had a feather on his body and the distinguishing red tail feathers of African greys were all but missing.

Markai was taken into the custody of the Bloemfontein SPCA with the aim to rehabilitate during the first stages and then sending the African grey to Birds of Eden to be fully rehabilitated and to roam free in their huge aviaries.

I was so sad to know Markai had to go and although my heart wanted nothing more than to keep him with me and to spend a little more time with him, I knew that the old saying is true if you love something set it free and true love means not letting him sit in a cage, a bird is there to fly after all” said Inspector Werner Botha who found Markai.

Markai started the 2nd part of his recovery earlier this month when he was sent to Birds of Eden. Markai arrived safely and is recovering at an exceptional rate and will soon be released into his new home. The cruelty charges laid against the owner as due to head to court soon where the Bloemfontein SPCA is hoping to secure a conviction of Animal cruelty and to be granted denial of ownership.

𝗚𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝘆’𝘀 (𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙤) 𝗘𝗴𝗴𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🥴 🥚

Reproductive disease in birds is a problem we deal with all too frequently, especially over Spring and Summer. Grumpy, an African grey parrot, was unfortunate enough to experience reproductive disease.

Unlike dogs and cats, routine desexing of avian patients is not practical due to their anatomy. Most bird species only have one o***y, but this o***y is closely associated with some very large blood vessels. Removing the o***y without causing significant (life-threatening) damage to these blood vessels is generally not possible. Companion parrots are not really domesticated animals, which means their bodies are very good at picking up on environmental cues that signify that conditions are appropriate for breeding.

Grumpy presented to Dr Alex at our Sunshine Coast clinic, and her only presenting complaint was reduced appetite. On examination, Dr Alex could palpate a crunchy mass inside her coelom (abdomen). Radiographs confirmed that Grumpy had not one but TWO collapsed eggs inside her body. Grumpy is 20 years old and has NEVER laid an egg before. Unfortunately, her body attempted to do just that and failed.

Grumpy was hospitalised and provided with supportive care consisting of warmth, fluid therapy, pain relief, and assisted feeding. Sometimes collapsed eggs can be manually removed from the reproductive tract via the cloaca under a short general anaesthetic. Part of one of the eggs was successfully removed, but the rest was not going to budge without surgery.

Dr Pat and Nurse Amber anaesthetised Grumpy and performed a salpingotomy, a surgery whereby the abdominal wall and oviduct are opened to remove the contents of the oviduct. The offending eggshells were removed. During the surgery, Dr Pat found that the wall of the oviduct was extremely thickened. A biopsy was taken for histopathology and a swab collected for bacterial culture. The histopathology revealed that the cause of the swelling was inflammation, likely caused by the collapsed eggs. The culture grew no bacteria which indicated that the oviduct was not infected.

Grumpy recovered well from her surgery, and one week later, Dr Sasha surgically placed a hormone implant under her skin to help prevent her from laying more eggs. Techniques to reduce reproductive drive were discussed with Grumpy’s owner.

Grumpy is a perfect example of how a female bird can go decades without laying an egg before attempting to do so. Although we cannot desex our pet parrots, we can manipulate their husbandry to minimise their reproductive drive. This is done by managing their environment, nutrition, and social interactions with family members.
