Barnett Horsemanship Pony Training and Exercising Services now located just outside Edgemont SD I have experience riding English, Western, and Ba****ck.

I am a young horsewoman who grew up on horse farms and training facilities across the country. I have worked with A circuit hunter, Western pleasure, reining, roping, gymkhana, English pleasure, dressage, and vaulting horses. I also have experience teaching beginner lessons and leading trail rides in a summer camp program. As a horsewoman I have experience, but I am always willing to try new thin

gs and learn more. My passion is helping horses be safer, happier, and healthier. While competition is not one of my goals, I have competed on a local level. I have experience caring for and managing performance horses in a professional capacity and through growing up in performance facilities. I have assisted vets with joint injections, handled horses for flexion tests, dentals, and other veterinary procedures. I am experienced noticing mild lameness, and I can effectively manage non-emergency health needs in communication with a veterinarian. Treating ulcers, multiple colics, laminitis, eye injuries, or rehabilitation under veterinary supervision is also in my equine management wheelhouse. Childhood Memories
My parent was a successful horse trainer and barn manager in Virginia when I was born, almost on the farm. As a baby I was sitting on horses as soon as I could sit up, and when I wasn’t on the horses I was crawling around the aisle ways. I was riding independently by age three and very frustrated that I still had to be in the lead line classes in the local fun shows I attended. Early in my life, my parent moved to a large scale Quarter Horse breeding farm in New Mexico where I quickly learned to read horses, from the stallions smelling a mare in heat to knowing which mares were going to give birth each night. I spent hours riding my pony and my mother’s horse ba****ck. As a seven year old figuring out the canter ba****ck, I fell off plenty, and always got right back on. Soon after, I moved again where I lived on an “A” circuit hunter farm and helped care for top quality show horses. This is where I had my first “training” experience when the trainer for the facility began having me ride the lesson ponies she couldn’t for tune-up rides, often after they picked up bad habits from less experienced riders. From there, my mother had a job managing and training on an Arabian breeding facility, where I spent my afternoons watching her work aggressive stallions in the round pen. With help, I applied natural horsemanship techniques to better my relationship with my pony, Dixie. At around age ten, my mother moved to the Chambersburg area to manage a large collegiate equine facility. Following the death of my childhood pony, I got a youth barrel horse who only knew how to rodeo. With help from my mother, I taught him how to go slow and easy as well as fast and furious. Now he can be ridden ba****ck in a bitless bridle through a pasture walk, trot, and canter.

Finally actually being happy with Dice's body condition is a new high, combine it with finding a saddle pad that actually picks my (way too big) saddle up off his spine and corrects some of the other fit challenges we face and I am over the moon!
We also had perhaps our best ride yet yesterday testing out our new saddle pad from Total Saddle Fit, the adjustable spine channel combined with a unique stackable shim system gives unparalleled flexibility, not to mention it looking like "just a saddle pad" and coming in all kinds of cool colors

Welp, if you gonna be a fly mask Houdini... See what your friends say about this 🤣😈

We had a long trip home, arriving around 1am because we had to stop and wait out a fast moving storm, so I'm sure Dice was very happy to lay down and have a good long sleep!

I don't have any photos yet, but I am so excited to announce won our division (by a small margin, came in second, but I thought for sure they were going to take it because they were amazing) and came in third for high point team! I also can officially say Dice is mine and we are heading home as I won his bid!

Huge congratulations to all the trainers at the Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge this year. Having been a part of 2 now as a trainer and a third behind the scenes, this was the best year yet, and everyone did so well!

Also thank you to all the volunteers and spectators who came out, braved the awful heat and supported the horses, trainers and the rescue! Without you all this program couldn't be what it is.

I'm sure I will have lots of photos in the next few weeks from Spenser Pederson who is always carving out beautiful memories of all the little moments that go into the showdown (and all the other events)

Thank you to my sponsors and helpers:

Elizabeth Woolfrey for sponsoring Dice's full training period

Equine Essence Horsemanship & Bodywork for giving Dice his first (of many) massages to be in peak condition for the weekend, and assisting me with him when I needed an extra set of hands

Shawn Schilling of Windance Farm for the support and use of her facility

We are officially bound!!!!

Its been a crazy summer not only for myself but the horses as well and it all comes down to this weekend! Every horse that comes into my program leaves with a little piece of my heart so to be sending not one but three to new homes this weekend is a little bittersweet! A few tears may be shed, but they’ll all be happy tears!!

, and all loaded like champs like they know something big is in store for them and I truly hope every adopter can see the amazing potential that all three of these horses carries! I will be available all day tomorrow at the Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge to answer any questions anyone may have and will be working all three horses if any one would like to watch!

See you soon Yankton!! Safe travels to the rest of the Showdown horses and trainers!!!

was not so sure about the whole massage thing to start, but Alexis Louis of Equine Essence Horsemanship & Bodywork was super patient and by the end he was sad about her leaving! He also did super well having a bunch of people just hanging out watching.

Lexi recently completed her equine massage therapy certification and is now taking clients in the Black Hills! Here is a message from her:

I do Equine Sports Therapy for the Equine Athlete! My technique is a muscular skeletal bodywork that’s a combination of deep tissue massage, physical therapy, acupressure, trigger point release and stretches. This combination helps the horse self adjust!

My technique is also

Structural Integration for Horses - Deep tissue massage and rebalancing mixed together. A massage type of therapy for horses that will rebalance the body left to right, front to back, inside and out. Changes will happen in natural balance, performance, flexibility and behavior.

Structural Integration is a type of bodywork that focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body. Fascia surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, organs, and nerves, binding some structures together while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other.

Adoption deadline extended! If you've been on the fence about a Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge horse, now is your chance! Just don't adopt Dice 😉

All the horses through this program have had at least 100 days of training and are either ready to get miles put on or ready to be started under saddle. They have all had at least one "sat upon"

We just sent out a bunch of approvals and emails to potential adopters for this weekend's 2024 Dakota Showdown Finale! That means we can EXTEND the deadline - so if you are considering adoption, go ahead and get those applications in!

http://dakotashowdown.com/adopt

Any GSH current adopters who may wish to bid should also reach out ASAP! You are already approved, but need to be in AnimalsFirst to process the adoption.

The adoption auctions are now OPEN and approved adopters will be getting the link tonight. Let's get homes for everyone!!

With the Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge finale upon us, this will be my final official training update for

I have not taken any photos or videos, but Dice has now had one walk/trot ride and a handful of walk only rides. He is very forward, and we spend lots of time "whoa-ing" standing, relaxing and remembering to breathe (him, not me). He will have a spa day tomorrow, including a bath and massage from Alexis Louis, who just got her equine massage certification. Thursday we will likely work in the round pen to further solidify his bond to me, and Friday we will pack up and head out to Yankton.

I would also like to formally announce that I will be bidding to adopt Dice! These past hundred (or so) days with him have been some of the most challenging and rewarding days for me as a trainer, and I have fallen in love with this handsome boy. I think with continued stability and trust in "his" person, he will progress to be just about everything I could ask for in a horse.

I cannot wait to see all the other teams at the showdown finale this weekend, and I am excited to see all the progress they made. I also encourage everyone to come out and support this wonderful program, even if you aren't looking to adopt a horse.

Trainers- Safe travels, and remember not to get too worried about the "competition" aspect, as this is first and foremost about getting these horses exposure and experience and EVERYONE has absolutely nailed that this year!
