We have literally rescued thousands of koi fish from failing Aquascape design water features since 2008. As a registered non profit, our sole mission is to find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care.

While both can make beautiful additions to your backyard, there are many significant differences between a typical water garden (Aquascape design pond) and a dedicated koi pond specifically designed to handle large koi fish (and the waste they produce) at typical stocking rates. One large koi can produce as much waste as hundreds of smaller fish.

Koi keeping can also be an addicting hobby, resulting in many hobbyists overstocking their ponds. A proper koi pond design should include a bottom drain installed at the lowest point. A pond bottom drain effectively sweeps your pond floor 24/7, negating any need to ever purchase a pond vacuum nor ever hire a “certified” landscaper for seasonal pond clean outs.

To help maximize koi health the pond floor should also be smooth — not covered with rocks and gravel as this creates a toxic breeding ground for anaerobic bacteria and other pond parasites. The vast majority of koi fish waste also sinks to the pond floor, where it will NEVER be removed by a skimmer filter as it hides under the gravel and rocks.

The filter setups commonly installed on Aquascape design ponds are also significantly undersized for large koi. A properly designed koi pond should also be at least 3ft deep (deeper is better). For all these reasons (among several others) we believe Aquascape design ponds do not provide a sustainable healthy ecosystem for koi.

And because koi health is our top priority, we strongly prefer to make our koi available for rehoming exclusively to properly designed koi ponds…

The very unhappy owners of this failing Aquascape design water feature literally referred to the “certified” contractor who built it as a “conman.” Sadly, their story is not at all unique. Over the years we have completed literally hundreds of koi rescues from failing Aquascape design “ponds” just like this one. Contrary to what your friendly Aquascape landscaper may claim during a sales pitch, a water garden and a true koi pond are NOT the same thing. A proper koi pond is much more than a landscaping project often completed in just a few days.

Water gardening is a wonderful hobby, but a water garden is not a proper ecosystem for large koi fish. This is especially true at typical stocking rates. And regardless of what claims you may read elsewhere, you will NEVER be able to achieve “balance” trying to safely keep large koi fish within an Aquascape design water feature. If your intent is to provide a healthy long-term ecosystem for large koi fish, then we highly encourage you to do your own research before you spend a dime. Speak with professional pond builders, respected koi importers, and domestic koi breeders…

Every once in a while we receive an angry comment from someone upset about our sharing our honest assessment regarding Aquascape design water features being woefully unfit for longterm koi health. Almost without exception, these negative comments tend to originate from “certified” landscapers who rely on the Aquascape business model to earn a living.

As a registered non profit organization, we do not sell any competing products nor services. Our sole agenda is to help ensure the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care are placed into suitable new forever homes. For this reason alone, we strongly prefer to make our rescued koi fish available to proper koi ponds only. While both can be aesthetically appealing, a water garden (typical Aquascape water feature) and a proper koi pond are not the same.

A proper koi pond design can achieve and maintain optimal water quality at typical koi stocking rates while requiring a minimal maintenance workload for the pond owner. In addition, a proper koi pond design also offers virtually zero ongoing service costs, because annual pond clean-outs are not required and you’ll never have to buy a pond vacuum nor hire your contractor to come back to replace the gravel and rocks left on your pond floor.

If you are planning to add a pond to your own backyard, we highly encourage you to do your own research. Be sure to speak with leading koi breeders, koi dealers and pond builders then form your own opinions…

The koi world is very small. If you are looking to purchase high quality Japanese koi fish we would be extremely happy to refer you to several highly reputable koi dealers located within Southern California that not only support us, but whom we also consider to be close personal friends. We are NOT koi dealers ourselves, nor are we their competitors in any way. We are a nonprofit animal rescue specializing in large koi fish and other common pond pets.

The sole purpose of our special hosted koi adoption events is to help find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care. While rehoming fees charged at these events are a tiny fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost, these minimal fees do help to offset some of our operational costs for the various free services we provide. We have successfully re-homed hundreds of large koi fish through adoptions made at these events.

With new pond construction now fully recovered from COVID, our special hosted koi adoption events will only continue into the future if sufficient interest exists among private hobbyists. Our koi adoption request process is intended to help ensure our rescued koi fish are placed into suitable ponds only while also helping to set realistic expectations for hobbyists wishing to attend one of our hosted events for the first time.

Southern California Koi Rescue is a registered non-profit animal rescue. Our sole mission is to find new forever homes for these precious living jewels. Since 2008 we have successfully rescued and rehomed literally thousands of koi which came to us from commercial water features and residential ponds located throughout CA, NV, and AZ.

An approved Koi Adoption Request is required to help ensure our available koi are placed into suitable ponds only. Much like when you adopt a dog or cat from your local animal shelter, a nominal rehoming fee is charged for every koi adoption. This rehoming fee is a very small fraction of typical koi dealer wholesale cost and helps to offset some of our operating costs for the various services we provide.

Unfortunately, it is not cheap nor easy to do what we do. So if you are looking for free koi, please look elsewhere. Over nearly two decades our dedicated team of volunteers has completed literally hundreds of large koi fish rescues located throughout CA, NV, and AZ. After finishing quarantine, these living jewels are placed into properly vetted new forever homes.

Many of our rescued koi are placed into large proper koi ponds constructed by our supporting pond builders. Since 2020 our volunteers have also hosted special koi adoption events, making some of our rescued koi available direct to approved private hobbyists for the very first time.

Our koi adoption events are scheduled approximately once every 4-6 weeks. A confirmed appointment is required, and only private hobbyists with an approved koi adoption request are eligible to attend. Valued return customers who have previously adopted koi during our events are also eligible to schedule special private koi adoption appointments.

As a registered animal rescue, our sole mission is to find suitable new forever homes for the beautiful living jewels entrusted to our care. In addition to large koi fish rescues, we also consistently receive a very high volume of turtle rescue requests. Unfortunately, we have been unable to accommodate all these requests due to a lack of resources and insufficient room available in our dedicated turtle pond habitat.

Our dedicated turtle pond habitat is intended to serve as a temporary home for our rescued turtles while they await permanent placement through adoption. Due to extremely high demand for turtle rescues, in October 2023 we invested significant resources to completely rebuild our dedicated turtle pond habitat. This upgrade allows us to safely care for significantly more turtles awaiting new forever homes.

Unfortunately, the demand for turtle rescues will continue to far exceed our capacity. Therefore, effective January 1, 2024 a fee of $20 USD per turtle will be required for all turtle rescues/surrenders. This donation will help to offset some of our costs for caring for your turtle(s) while we diligently work to find them suitable new forever homes…

Our dedicated team of volunteers commonly travels hundreds of miles at their own expense to complete large koi rescues located throughout CA, NV, and AZ. Because many of our volunteers have full-time careers during the week, it is not uncommon for them to put in 12, 14, or even 16-hour workdays on weekends to help rescue these precious living jewels. No one is getting rich doing what we do. In fact, like most nonprofit animal rescues, sometimes we feel extremely lucky just to break even considering all the expenses required.

So why have we been committed to doing this now for nearly two decades? Well, the answer is quite simple. We do this because we genuinely love it, because few things in life bring us as much joy as when one of our valued supporters and friends shares a photo or video with us showing some of our rescued koi fish enjoying their new forever home. Having now hosted dozens of koi adoption events over the past 3 years, we have also greatly enjoyed making it possible for approved private hobbyists to acquire large, beautiful koi fish they might otherwise never be able to afford.

As we look towards the future, we want to express our sincerest appreciation to all those who have supported us along the way. Whether you made an in-kind charitable donation or took the long drive to attend one of our special hosted events in the past, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
