Cairn Rescue USA We are incorporated in New York, but thanks to the internet we are able to rescue Cairns nationwide.

Cairn Rescue USA is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing Cairn Terriers dogs like Toto from the WOZ. Cairn Rescue USA is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing Cairn Terriers dogs like Toto from the Wizard of Oz. Our rescue Cairns come from animal shelters and

humane societies; others are released to us by their owners due to changes in family circumstances, the birth of a human child, having to move, divorce. death, illness, financial distress or to the owners realizing that a Cairn is not a good match for them; still others come from puppy mills where they have spent their lives in small wire cages producing the cute puppies that petstores sell. We do not have a shelter or similar facility and depend on a network of volunteers who under our officers guidence rehabilitate our rescue Cairns in their homes. Our rescue Cairns are spayed/neutered, tested and if necessary, treated, for heartworm and other parasites, and brought up-to-date on their vaccines prior to their placement in loving forever homes. To learn more about how you too can become a foster home, to adopt one of our wonderful dogs or to donate to help us continue helping these wonderful dogs, please visit our website at www.CairnRescueUSA.com

Remembering Your Cairn: The Rainbow Edition

Cairn Rescue USA started the Rainbow Edition of Carin' for Cairns in 2013 to remember our Cairns and other companion animals who went to the Rainbow Bridge during the previous year.

We would like to honor those who have left us in 2024 with our THIRTEENTH Rainbow Edition, to be published in February of 2025 with an accompanying video of all our Rainbow dogs. If you have lost a Cairn or other companion animal in 2024, send us a short paragraph (250 words or less) along with one or two high resolution pictures or a short video by January 20, 2025. (Note the companion animal does not need to be a CRUSA dog and may be a 'friend to cairns' if not a Cairn Terrier).

Please include:
1. Your name
2. Your dog’s name
3. Birth and death dates of your dog (when known, or estimate)
4. Where you live (city and state)
5. How and when your dog came into your life
6. What your best friend added to your life; what you will always remember
7. Picture or short video (please, only 1 or 2 high resolution pictures without text overlaid, and if video, 1 minute or less).

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: January 20, 2025. Please email your stories and pictures to [email protected]. We will confirm receipt of your submission, so please email [email protected] (editor of Carin’ for Cairns) if you do not hear from us within a few days of your submission.
If you are unable to write a paragraph, send us just the birth and death dates, city and state, and a picture. (Note the Cairn does not need to be a CRUSA dog and may be a 'friend to Cairns' if not a Cairn).
Our deepest condolences to you in your loss of your best friend.

Ollie & Lillian would like nothing more than to be home for Christmas in their very own home. This adorable bonded pair are approximately 8 years old and just the sweetest pups ever. They are house trained and total snuggle bugs. They are being fostered in Iowa. If you are not in a position to adopt, please share this post & help them find a home.

FROM BJ: As most of you know, Shell Lewis is stepping back from her 18-year role as CRUSA’s Director of Midwest Intakes and Adoptions. I wish Shell and her pups Spangle and Nora all the best - wherever their future endeavors and travels might take them. I am excited to announce that Judy Greig from Michigan will be taking on this role, and I know that all of you reading this will give her a very warm welcome. Judy tells us about her amazing life:
“I spent 35 years in corporate engineering/marketing for Cadillac. Off hours were spent helping with my (late) husband's passion of breeding warmblood horses. I retired in 2013 and built a doggie bed and breakfast at my farm - last count I saw 150 clients and growing! I got a great deal of experience with different breeds and behaviors. At one time I had 16 dogs sleeping in my house and everyone was happy! But I concluded that my brain was not getting the exercise it needed, so I ramped down the doggie B&B to continue the renovations on my farm, and studied for and became a licensed appraiser.”
“I love the appraiser work, most of which is agriculture focused. I’ve appraised vacant farmland, an apiary, composting business, car wash, pheasant hunting ranch, shuttered dairies and cattle facilities.”
"I have fostered close to 30 cairn terriers since retirement, some of which have been foster fails. I specialize in puppy mill rescues that did not have the best life prior to coming into rescue. My 'trademark' foster fails have ALL been dark brindles! I have had 19 dogs throughout my lifetime who called me 'mom'. Some have been with me for 16 years, some a mere 10 months, as I am not afraid to take in older pups with medical issues.”
“My free time is spent making renovations on my farm, enjoying my dogs, cats and 1 pony, while trying to provide a little more value while I'm still on this earth.”
Thanks to both Shell and Judy for their devotion to our favorite breed!! And I am grateful to all of our volunteers and supporters.

If you are looking for a puppy, be aware that scammers are promising them a Cairn puppy or dog. Once you pay, you see no dog and your $ is GONE. DO NOT interact with ROSE M FRITZ of Kansas City MO!!!! Plus, you don't ever pay in gift cards..that's a big no no!

WELCOME "Hope" TO CAIRN RESCUE USA. This 13-lb. spitfire was surrendered to our rescue group today by an elderly couple who found her too energetic for their sedate lifestyle.

Hope is adorable and affectionate but has never had any training and needs to learn manners. This is not a dog for a first-time dog owner. Hope's ideal owner would have terrier experience and be committed to formal obedience training and providing a structured environment. This young lady is eager to learn and would be the perfect candidate for canine performance sports such as agility, barn hunt, earth dog or flyball. A work from home dog parent who wants to make a little terrier an integral part of family life could be a great candidate. Younger, active retirees looking for a good hiking companion might also be a good match. And we will also consider families with older children where the entire family would be involved in dog training.

Hope generally appears to enjoy the company of other small dogs (watch the accompanying video). To the best of our knowledge she has not had exposure to cats and we would not recommend her going to a home with a feline.

Hope had a full examination today and is in excellent health. She will be spayed in early December and then she will be ready for her forever home. We are now accepting applications at:

https://cairnrescueusa.com/adoption-application/

Out-Of-State applications are always considered, but once approved, the new family must travel to the foster home in St. Charles Illinois to finalize the adoption. No exceptions.

CHICAGO AREA TERRIER PEEPS...URGENT! HARRY NEEDS A NEW FOSTER HOME ASAP!

Harry is an adorable terrier mix who recently joined our rescue group. He is in need of an immediate foster home! Harry is sweet and affectionate and gets along great with other dogs. No cats. He has only had a couple of accidents in his foster home and would do best with a foster parent who is home most of the day. Transportation within a 2-hour radio of Chicago available.

Congratulations to Megan H. of St. Louis who adopted 8 year old Luke yesterday. No, Luke is not a Cairn...he's a purebred Havanese who was a stud dog in an Illinois kennel. He now gets to live his life as a beloved companion, instead of a puppy producer.

Kudos to foster mom Michele Donovan who did an exceptional job getting Luke ready for his next stage of life. Thanks to Mary Whitledge who is always willing to step in at a moment's notice to help with transportation. And a thumbs up to Terri Pearce who fast tracked the reference checks. "Takes a village".

CASPER AND OPAL IN MICHIGAN

YOU MAY REMEMBER CASPER AND OPAL, TWO GORGEOUS PUREBRED CAIRNS WHO JOINED US JUST A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO. WELL, THESE BEAUTIES ARE NOW UP FOR ADOPTION (SINGULARLY OR TOGETHER) BUT WILL REQUIRE A SPECIFIC TYPE OF TERRIER-EXPERIENCED HOME. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY TO SEE IF YOU'D BE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR ONE OF THESE GORGEOUS CAIRNS. IF SO, WE WOULD WELCOME YOUR APPLICATION WHICH YOU'LL FIND AT: https://cairnrescueusa.com/adoption-application/. Please note that these dogs are are located in Michigan and travel to the foster home (need name of your town again) is required. No flying!

Please be patient once you submit your application. This is not "first come, first served"; rather the foster home and placement director will coordinate to make the best match for both dog and adopter.

***************************

6-year-old Opal and 2-year-old Casper came into rescue from an Midwest Amish breeder. While many retired breeder dogs are fearful of humans come to us very undersocialized, these two are most welcoming of human attention and affection once they get to know you. But they still have MUCH to learn!

As their past living quarters would have been a barn or perhaps a kennel and run, they were never fully housebroken They DO keep their kennels clean at night, however, if you are seeking a fully housebroken dog, these dogs would not be right for now. Full potty training will require patience and time and lots of positive reinforcement. Likewise, neither dog has ever been on a leash so a fenced yard is an absolute must and leashed walks is a skill that must be taught gently and slowly. Working with a trainer would certainly be a plus.

Both Opal and Casper demonstrate a bit of initial shyness that is very typical of dogs that come from a breeding background. At a first meeting, Casper "pancakes" or crouches down but once he is picked up, he loves to be held and petted. Opal, on the other hand, rolls submissively on her back when meeting a newcomer but now, like Casper, she looks forward to interaction with her foster mom.

Both dogs have very good appetites. They have not interacted with the other Cairns in the household (only each other) but they have seen them through fencing and there has been no aggressive behavior.

As breeder dogs, Casper and Opal would not have had access to toys, however, Casper does play with them a bit and while Opal doesn't at this time, chances are she will in the future.

Retired breeder dogs learn much from other dogs and ideally, we would like to see these two go to homes with one other like-sized dog. These dogs would not be appropriate in a home with small children (under 12) or where someone is working 8 hours a day. Their ideal home would be one where there is a "work from home" dog parent or an active, patient retiree who wants to shower a needy little dogs with time and attention. No cats!

Both dogs are fully vetted. Opal has been spayed and Casper will be neutered in early November.
