WHEW! Big weekend for our riders! Starting off with the 4H Area West Horse Show. Our English division riders were Alayna, Alexa, and Avery and our Speed division riders were Karter and Westyn. These girls went up against riders from 6 other counties and held their own! All of these girls came home with wins.

•Alayna and Chief are the cutest coming home with a 1st and 2 second places! Alayna has put in work on her green pony!

•Alexa and Riley won Jr. Hunter Showmanship! They came home with 2 more 1st places and a 2nd place. Excellent job!!

•Avery and Gambler won Jr. HUS and Hunter Type Geldings! They received 2nd in Jr. equitation and Jr. Hunter Showmanship!! Super job!

•Karter and Skat laid down some very nice patterns! 2nd in poles, 3rd in barrels, 4th in stakes, and 5th in showmanship! Fantastic!!

•Westyn and W***y placed 5th in Poles and 6th in Barrels!! Great job!

Their hard work paid off! Super proud of all of their accomplishments!

Next off, our riders Allison, Avalynn, Maddie, and Madison competed at Legends in the Making.

•Allison broke the ice on her first barrel race and didn't break a sweat! Super job!

•Our leadline Barrel riders Maddie and Avalynn got their horses around the barrels!

•Madison laid down a nice run on Jealously!

•Karter and Ace. Karter has taken on Ace as her project horse and has really shown her dedication to this sport. Keep it up, Karter!!

Ending the weekend at the Stokes Barrel Race!

•Kayden and Blue made their personal best time!!

•Montana and Minnie slowed down to improve their foundation. Great job, Montana displaying true horsemanship skills to our younger riders!

•Karter and Six laid down a nice run!

• Harper and Hampton continuing to lay down some nice runs! Great job!

•Kiera and Mystery really stepped up with a nice run!

•Jayden and Minnie continuously improving with every ride!

•Raegan and Cash laid down a nice pole run!!

•Maddie and Ferby are the perfect match! Great job!

•Hadleigh and Mystery got a taste of speed this weekend! Great job Hadleigh!

Madison with Spur and Monkey were consistent with their runs this weekend! Excellent!!

Awesome job for every rider. Yall should be proud of yourselves!!

Yes! Lesson horses are so special! We love our lesson horses ❤️

One of my biggest frustrations in this industry is the lack of understanding and consideration for the role that lesson horses play. So often, I see riders complaining about lesson horses for a huge variety of reasons: for their perceived lack of quality or value, for having to ride one they don’t like, for not getting to ride the one they do like, for their trainer not having enough lesson horses, or for the lesson horses not being available at their convenience when their personal horse is out of commission. I’ve dealt with all of the above and I know I’ll continue to do so, but I think it’s important that people understand the reality of lesson horses, and that’s that they aren’t here for your kid to ride forever and climb the levels with your one or two lesson a week commitment. They’re here to get you started, safely and productively, while you decide just how far you want to take this.

Lesson horses are incredibly special creatures. They have to be easily caught by beginners who don’t know how to properly approach a prey animal. They have to stand like statues on the crossties while tiny kids take the better part of an hour to get them clean. They have to hold their head still while beginners jam the bit into their teeth for the fiftieth time in a row to put the bridle on. They have to stand still at the mounting block while someone stands for too long with all their weight in the left stirrup and then slams down on their back with no consideration for their comfort. They tolerantly teach riders who are unbalanced, uncoordinated, and unclear, who catch their mouths and bounce on their backs and kick at their sides, and every single time, they are expected to just come again without so much as a swish of their tail or pinning of their ears. And any time one of these horses has a moment where they act like a regular horse or force the rider to really ride, they’re labeled annoying or rude or bad or lazy or whatever.

Lesson horses are not intended to take you up the levels and jump big jumps and win all the classes. If these horses were this beginner-friendly and this tolerant AND the hack winner with an auto lead change, you couldn’t afford them! That’s not to say these horses can’t be winners if you ride them well and pull your weight, but their ability to win in the show ring is not where their real value lies. Lesson horses exist to bring new riders into the sport. To teach them the ropes and get them started, lay a foundation and prepare them to make a bigger commitment to the sport by leasing or purchasing the next step horse. Lesson horses are not responsible for chasing your Olympic dreams for you. They’re responsible for getting them started in the first place. For riders to act like a lesson horse isn’t valuable because he isn’t the winner in any company is ignorant and unfair.

Every horse you ride has something to teach you. Whether it’s the crotchety old school pony who likes to root when you’re not paying attention, or the younger lesson horse who will only pick up the right lead if you ask *just right*, or the ultra reliable skip-change king, they all will add to your toolkit that you can one day apply to the fancier model you get to take you to the next level. Don’t forget about all the lessons you learn along the way and remember that without lesson horses, you wouldn’t be riding at all!

**Thank you so much for all of the shares!! The fact that this took off the way it did shows that people love and appreciate their lesson horses, as they should!! If you wish to share my words with your own photo, I would really appreciate being given author credit. Thank you!**

Congratulations to all of our riders that competed at the 4H show! So proud of all of you! Keep working hard!

Pre-registration is open for the January 6th show. Get with us to help you with class choice and entry information.

Reminder that the horse's registered name is to be used.

If you are showing the same horse for all three of these shows, the horse's name has to be the same when you register for each show. This is how they track points for end of the year awards. When you register the horse's registered name for one show and their barn name for the other two shows, it appears that you were showing two different horses.

It’s SHOW TIME! Pre-registration is now open for the Bartow Open Show, January 6th.

Dear Horse Project Members, Volunteers and Parents/Guardian, (you will be receiving an email with all this information, shortly)

I trust you all weathered the storm ok and are safe and had the least amount of damage to your property. Unfortunately, the Oak tree in the Bartow Arena fell and damaged a portion of the announcers booth. With that, we will be canceling our first Horse Show scheduled for October 15th . Please note that we will use our rain date and will still have three shows in 2022-2023. The show dates are as follows:
1st Horse show: Saturday, January 7th
2nd Horse show: Saturday, March 4th
3rd Horse show: Saturday, March 11th

We still have some folks without power, and some are still getting their properties cleaned up after Ian hence we are rescheduling the 4-H Horse Mandatory Orientation Meeting from zoom to in-person meeting on Monday, November 7th at the Brenneman Auditorium at UF/IFAS Extension Polk County. Please mark your calendars for that November 7th .

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me should you have any questions.
