Today was a big day
Harley went home with her forever family 💗and she was so very willing to go.
It was almost as if she had known them for a very long time.
I’m so happy they chose each other and now this girl is off to play with her sweet two year old girl, her new humans, and her Chicken 🐓 sisters.

Astro was such a good momma to her babies when she had her first.
She’s been super curious about this baby since I’ve had to pull it from it’s momma.
She, without hesitation, took this baby on as her own.
Now we wait a few days to see if she will get some milk to feed this sweet baby.

In June, RISE was voted by the community as the beneficiary of a community event sponsored by The Freeport Merchants Association.

Due to the high volume of calls we have been receiving, please listen closely to the following options and choose the one that best describes you or your situation:
Press 1 if you have a 10-year-old dog and your 15-year-old son has suddenly become allergic and you need to find the dog a new home right away.
Press 2 if you are moving today and need to immediately rehome your 150 pound, 8-year-old dog.
Press 3 if you have three dogs, had a baby and want to get rid of your dogs because you are the only person in the world to have a baby and dogs at the same time.
Press 4 if you just got a brand-new puppy and your old dog that you’ve had for 16 years is having problems adjusting, so you want to get rid of the old one right away.
Press 5 if your little puppy has grown up and is no longer small and cute and you want to trade it in for a new model.
Press 6 if you want an unpaid volunteer to come to your home TODAY and pick up the dog you no longer want.
Press 7 if your old dog has endured years of being tugged at and jumped on by your children, and now that the dog is sore and arthritic, has shown his teeth, so you need rid of him right away instead of teaching your kids how to behave.
Press 8 if your dog is sick and needs a vet, but you need the money for your holiday.
Press 9 if your dog doesn’t like your new partner.
Press 10 if your relative has died and you don’t want to care for their elderly dog because it doesn’t fit your lifestyle.
Press 11 if you suddenly have no time for your dog.
Press 12 if your two-year-old male dog is marking all over your house but you just haven’t gotten around to having him neutered.
Press 13 if you want to return your recently-adopted dog, and seeing him in a cage isn’t as heart-breaking as it was when you adopted him.
Press 14 if you heard that your unchipped dog has been brought to the safety of the shelter, but you’re angry and don’t want to pay the small fee that keeps the charity running and looking after dogs like yours.
Press 15 to leave us an anonymous garbled message, letting us know you have left a dog in our yard in the middle of January, which is, in fact, better than just leaving the dog with no message.
Press 16 if you are going to get angry because we are not going to take your dog that you have had for fifteen years, because it is not OUR responsibility.
Press 17 if you are going to threaten to take your ten-year-old dog to be euthanized because we won’t take it.
Press 18 if you didn’t realize that dogs require time, care, attention, exercise and training, so you would prefer not to have a dog anymore.
Press 19 if you want one of our PERFECTLY trained, housebroken, kid and cat friendly purebred dogs that we have an abundance of.
Press 20 if you want us to take your dog that has a slight aggression problem, i.e. has only bitten a few people and killed your neighbours’ cats.
Press 21 if you have already called once and been told we don’t have any space left to take in dogs, so you called again to see if a different staff member could magic a kennel out of nowhere.
Press 22 if you want an 8-week-old puppy for your kids in time for Christmas.
Press 23 if your dog has had a litter in time for Christmas and now that you’re making money from them, you want rid of the mother.
Press 24 if your dog keeps getting out of your unfenced yard and you would rather get rid of it than spend money on fencing.
Press 25 if you have found a "stray", and when we collect it, you slip up by calling the dog by his name and he cries when we take him away.
Press 26 if you’re lying to make us feel bad so we’ll take your personal pet off your hands.
Press 27 if you have done “everything” to housebreak your dog and have had no success, but you don’t want to crate the dog because it’s “cruel”.
Press 28 if you’re angry that we can’t rehome an aggressive, unsocialised dog that you kept on a chain/in a pen in your backyard for months and never paid attention to.
Press 29 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because today is your daughter’s birthday and you forgot when she was born.
Press 30 if your dog’s coat doesn’t match your new furniture and you need a different color or breed.
Press 31 if your new partner of 4 weeks doesn’t like your dog and you are too stupid to get rid of them instead of the dog.
Press 32 if you went through all these ‘options’ and didn’t hear enough. This will connect you to the sounds of tears being shed by one of our staff who is holding a discarded old dog that is confused as to what he did wrong to be abandoned and homeless, and now has to wait for someone to see past his age and health problems to adopt him.

Meet Ruthie.
Named after the woman of womens’ rights, our dear friend found Ruthie dragging a hind leg.
They kindly paid over $150 for a vet visit to get her leg examined by a doctor and he discovered that her leg was not broken. She did have a deep wound to the tissue and muscle of her hind leg.
Ruthie has been recovering in my (Bekah) bathroom and her leg is healing nicely. She is shy and nervous but quite sweet.
RISE will do everything we can to help animals in need.

It's 6pm on Friday, and I'm writing to a few thousand friends I have not met yet. I'm writing to ask them to change our plans and meet a little while later.
Here's the thing.
I have a dog, Janet, and she's been ill for about 2 years now, as a tumor has been idling in her chest, growing ever so slowly. She's almost 14 years old now. I got her when she was 4 months old. I was 21 then — an adult, officially — and she was my kid.
She is a pitbull, and was found in Echo Park, with a rope around her neck, and bites all over her ears and face.
She was the one the dogfighters use to puff up the confidence of the contenders.
She's almost 14 and I've never seen her start a fight, or bite, or even growl, so I can understand why they chose her for that awful role. She's a pacifist.
Janet has been the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact. We've lived in numerous houses, and joined a few makeshift families, but it's always really been just the two of us.
She slept in bed with me, her head on the pillow, and she accepted my hysterical, tearful face into her chest, with her paws around me, every time I was heartbroken, or spirit-broken, or just lost, and as years went by, she let me take the role of her child, as I fell asleep, with her chin resting above my head.
She was under the piano when I wrote songs, barked any time I tried to record anything, and she was in the studio with me, all the time we recorded the last album.
The last time I came back from tour, she was spry as ever, and she's used to me being gone for a few weeks, every 6 or 7 years.
She has Addison's Disease, which makes it more dangerous for her to travel, since she needs regular injections of Cortisol, because she reacts to stress and excitement without the physiological tools which keep most of us from literally panicking to death.
Despite all this, she's effortlessly joyful & playful, and only stopped acting like a puppy about 3 years ago. She is my best friend, and my mother, and my daughter, my benefactor, and she's the one who taught me what love is.
I can't come to South America. Not now. When I got back from the last leg of the US tour, there was a big, big difference.
She doesn't even want to go for walks anymore.
I know that she's not sad about aging or dying. Animals have a survival instinct, but a sense of mortality and vanity, they do not. That's why they are so much more present than people.
But I know she is coming close to the time where she will stop being a dog, and start instead to be part of everything. She'll be in the wind, and in the soil, and the snow, and in me, wherever I go.
I just can't leave her now, please understand. If I go away again, I'm afraid she'll die and I won't have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out.
Sometimes it takes me 20 minutes just to decide what socks to wear to bed.
But this decision is instant.
These are the choices we make, which define us. I will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love & friendship.
I am the woman who stays home, baking Tilapia for my dearest, oldest friend. And helps her be comfortable & comforted & safe & important.
Many of us these days, we dread the death of a loved one. It is the ugly truth of Life that keeps us feeling terrified & alone. I wish we could also appreciate the time that lies right beside the end of time. I know that I will feel the most overwhelming knowledge of her, and of her life and of my love for her, in the last moments.
I need to do my damnedest, to be there for that.
Because it will be the most beautiful, the most intense, the most enriching experience of life I've ever known.
When she dies.
So I am staying home, and I am listening to her snore and wheeze, and I am revelling in the swampiest, most awful breath that ever emanated from an angel. And I'm asking for your blessing.

Cat Declawing is a very controversial subject.
One some don’t truly understand.
Declawing a cat is not removing the nail but surgical removal of what is the equivalent of our first knuckle on our fingers.
Can you imagine the pain, we humans, would feel if this were done to us? 😬
I can’t imagine it would be a pain free experience not to mention the fact that the nail could still grow within the paw and cause extreme pain and excessive biting to protect themselves.

We've been in the rescuing and rehoming space for a while now but nothing could have prepared us for the statistics that we found. It was absolutely shocking. My heart breaks for these animals that are abused, neglected, and of course for those that loved their families and were left behind In shelters or on the side of the road.
