We are very happy to announce that we have darts again! Not Pneudarts... but ClearDarts. These darts work exactly the same as Pneudarts, but they do look a little different; they are clear plastic. Even more importantly, we can get them! We carry them in 5cc, 7.5cc and 10cc sizes and they are sold in singles. So stop in and check them out. While you are here we'll even show you how they are loaded. We're pretty sure that you will want to take some home with you!

26/01/2023

We are sad to announce that our small animal veterinarian, Holly Jensen, is no longer with Burwell Veterinary Hospital. We thank her for her many years of service to the community and it's pets. We wish her luck in the future and know that she will be missed!

We would like the community to know that we will continue to offer vaccinations and boarding for your pets. Call anytime to make an appointment or reserve a space to board your pet.

Do you have an over active eater? It can be all fun and games until your pet ends up with an obstruction!

Signs to look out for...

pet being lethargic
Vomiting, especially when repetitive
Weakness
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Dehydration due to inability to hold any water down
Bloating
Abdominal pain
Hunching or whining

Treatment may involve...

Our Veterinarian will likely perform a physical exam and a radiograph to positively confirm the presence of a foreign object or mass, we will also give your dog fluids to correct dehydration and appropriate medications to lessen nausea and vomiting as well as pain. If an object does not pass into the dog’s stool, or if your veterinarian feels the object has been lodged too long, your dog may need surgery under anesthesia. That way, our vet can open the abdomen or intestine and remove the cause of the blockage.

Bowel Obstruction Prevention...

The best way to prevent bowel obstruction is to discourage and block your dog from trying to eat certain types of bones, sticks, rocks, and similar objects. Keep foods that are toxic to dogs and other temptations, including garbage cans, out of reach. Teaching the “Leave It” command can prevent your dog from attempting to explore something harmful. Only give your puppy or dog toys and treats that are safe and appropriate for them to chew.

Call your veterinarian immediately if you suspect or know your dog ate something unusual.

Do you know how to recognize pain in your pet? Some signs are more obvious, such as limping or yelping, while others are more subtle, such as excessive grooming or a change in litter box habits. September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, which is a good time to get to know the signs that your pet may be suffering. Be on the lookout for the following behaviors and call your veterinarian if you think your pet is in pain. Never try to treat your pet with human medications since many of them are toxic to animals.

The wall of wind and dirt that came through Burwell yesterday did a lot of damage to our clinic after it tore through the rodeo grounds' grandstand across the road yesterday. We're asking for your patience and cosideration for the next few months as we do the clean up and rebuild.
The red line in the picture shows the areas of the clinic building that lost it's roof. Thankfully, friends and neighbors pitched in to help get the scientific equipment out of the rooms affected as quickly as possible, in case it continued to rain.
We know this is probably the busiest time of year for a lot of our clients, so we have done our best to get the areas that are being heavily used right now at least temporarily sheltered.
We are asking our clients and friends to try to plan as far ahead as you can when you call for an appointment of any kind. And we will do our best to make sure that we are ready to help you. Thank you very much!
