🎓 GG Has Graduated! 🎓

Adopted dogs don’t always come home as a perfect fit—sometimes they need extra patience, structure, and training to truly settle in. GG’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, but her owner put in the work to help her build confidence and adapt to a new way of life. 🐾

Things like getting into her kennel and the car used to be stressful, but through training and trust-building, she’s learned to handle daily routines with far less anxiety. She’s still growing, but now she gets to enjoy car rides and pup cups without hesitation—little wins that mean everything for a dog who once struggled.

GG’s story is a reminder that adopted dogs take work, but the reward of seeing them thrive is worth every effort. Way to go, GG! 🎉🐶

🎓 Graduation Day for Angus & Murphy! 🎓

These two Scottish Terrier brothers have come a long way in their training journey, and while it hasn’t been a picture-perfect process, their owners have put in the work to help them live together with much more peace and structure. 🐾

Littermate syndrome isn’t something that just disappears overnight, but through engagement, clear communication, and leadership, Angus & Murphy are in a much better place than where they started. The random fights and tension have significantly improved, and their owners now have the tools to keep building on their progress.

It’s not about perfection—it’s about commitment and consistency, and these two are proof that with the right training, things can and do get better. Great job, Angus & Murphy! 👏🐶🐶

🎓 Graduation Day for Gasly! 🎓

Gasly, our food-driven, eager-to-learn Old English Bulldog/Doodle mix, has officially leveled up and completed his in-home training program through NXT Level Canine! From struggling with focus when treats weren’t around to building engagement through marker training, Gasly has come a long way—and his confidence shows! 💪🐶

But here’s where things get even more interesting…

Recently, another family reached out needing training for their dog, describing some of the same challenges Gasly had. As we talked more, I realized they got their pup from the same person who Gasly’s owners got him from—turns out they’re brothers! 🧩🐾

Now, we’re gearing up to help his sibling on his own training journey, and I’m excited to see how their similarities (and differences) play into the process. Stay tuned as we continue working toward success—one dog at a time!

🐾 Welcome, Skya! 🐾

Skya, a stunning 2-year-old Husky, has joined us for board and train after her owner started struggling with some recent aggression from Skya at home. Unsure where to turn, they reached out to Skya’s favorite groomers at I Shih-Tzu Knot, who knew exactly who to call—NXT Level Canine! 💪🐕

From day one, Skya has shown an incredible ability to learn and adapt. We’re working on counterconditioning her relationship with food, ensuring she feels safe and confident instead of stressed or reactive. With the right structure, engagement, and leadership, she’s proving just how quickly a dog can thrive with the right guidance!

Stay tuned as we help Skya level up! ⏳🐶✨

I will never sell myself short on having surface-level information on things I should understand really well because this is a detriment to the many dogs and owners that I help. What does the term ALPHA or DOMINANT mean to you and your dog? Read below for more insight!

For decades, the terms "alpha" and "dominant" have been used to describe dog behavior, often leading owners to believe that their pets are constantly vying for control of the household. This outdated belief stems from early research on wolf packs, which suggested that wolves establish strict dominance hierarchies with an "alpha" leader. However, this theory has long since been debunked, even by the very scientist who first proposed it. Yet, the myth persists, often to the detriment of dogs and their owners.

The Myth of the Alpha Dog

The concept of the "alpha" in dog training originates from studies conducted in the 1930s and 1940s on captive wolf packs. These studies concluded that wolves competed for dominance, with the strongest individual rising to the position of "alpha." However, the scientist behind this theory, Dr. David Mech, later retracted his claims after further research revealed that wild wolf packs do not operate in this manner. Instead, they function as family units, where parents naturally guide their offspring rather than dominate them through force.

Despite this, the notion of "alpha dogs" has continued to permeate dog training philosophies, often leading to misunderstandings and ineffective training approaches. The idea that dogs must be physically or psychologically dominated to be well-behaved has resulted in countless cases of unnecessary punishment, confusion, and damaged relationships between dogs and their owners.

Understanding Dogs for Who They Are

Rather than viewing dogs as dominant or hierarchical creatures, it is more accurate to understand them as adaptable and learning-driven animals. They do what works for them in any given situation. If a behavior gets them something they want—attention, food, or play—they will repeat it. Rather than attempting to “assert dominance” over a dog, owners should focus on guiding their behavior through clear communication, structured routines, and consistent training.

The Future of Dog Training

Effective dog training requires a balance of motivation, structure, and appropriate correction. Dogs thrive when they understand expectations and receive fair guidance. Teaching dogs through leadership, clear communication, and consistency creates a confident, well-adjusted pet rather than one that is fearful or resistant. The more we educate dog owners about the realities of canine behavior, the better relationships we can build with our four-legged companions.

In conclusion, the idea of an "alpha dog" is a myth that has no place in modern dog training. Understanding that dogs are not trying to dominate us, but rather seeking to fulfill their own needs, allows us to train them in a way that is both ethical and effective. By rejecting outdated dominance theories and embracing balanced training, we can create a more well-rounded and scientifically sound approach to raising well-behaved, happy dogs.

🐾 Meet Mia! 🐾
Mia is a beautiful 2-year-old Chow/Lab mix who recently started training with us to work through some big emotions. Her family reached out after noticing her alarm barking at many noises in the house and showing major stress when guests came over, leading to reactive behaviors.
While some behaviors can be shaped through training, others—especially those influenced by genetics and natural instincts—can’t simply be "fixed." But that doesn’t mean improvement isn’t possible! With consistent training, intentional management, and a structured approach, Mia is already learning to work through her stress and approach the world with more confidence.
At NXT Level Canine, we focus on helping dogs navigate stressful situations rather than just suppressing their reactions. Maya’s journey is a great reminder that progress takes time, patience, and commitment—and with the right approach, even the most challenging behaviors can be managed and improved!
Stay tuned for updates on Mia’s progress! If you’re struggling with similar behaviors, let’s talk about how we can help. 💛🐕

🐾 Remember Angus & Murphy? 🐾
These two littermates had their owners at their wits’ end with their random fights and constant tension in the home. But with consistent structure, clear guidance, and a game plan tailored to their needs, they’ve made incredible progress!
Over time, Angus and Murphy have been able to spend more and more time together peacefully—something that once felt impossible. Their owners have found a new level of relief, no longer worrying about sudden fights breaking out. Instead, they get to enjoy cooperative, well-mannered companions who bring harmony to their home instead of chaos.
This is why structure matters. Training isn’t just about commands—it’s about creating a lifestyle that allows both dogs and their humans to thrive. We couldn’t be happier for Angus, Murphy, and their dedicated owners! 💙🐾

🚀 Meet Miles! 🚀
Formerly known as Tanner… also known as Ace… but now, officially Miles! 🐾 This big sweetheart was adopted from Heart To Home - Animal Adoption Center and has recently started his Level 1 in-home training journey through NXT Level Canine! 🎓🐶
Every in-home training is unique—while we aim for a strong foundation of skills, no two paths look the same. Miles is already taking off with training, loving the chance to build a stronger bond with his new family. ❤️
One of our biggest goals? Helping Miles and his 4 legged sister Mia find harmony at home! Mia has had a tough time adjusting to her new brother, so we’re creating a game plan to help them compliment each other’s existence instead of competing over resources.

Follow along as Miles continues his journey! 🐕✨
