Since 2022, Dr. Green and her husband Alec Green have had the privilege of traveling to Guatemala to volunteer their time, skills, and services with a small group of veterinarians, technicians, family, and locals to serve the working horses, donkeys, and mules in the small villages that surround Antigua.

This team was founded by and is supported by numerous organizations such as the AAEP’s , , and many industry sponsors. We could not do these trips without their help!

They will be out of the office 2/7-2/14, but the team will be periodically checking phone calls, voicemails, email and texts while they are there.

By making these trips, we remain grounded, are held accountable, and renew our faith in humanity. We look forward to coming back more full of purpose and meaning that when we left!

The term "fat leg" is pretty self-explanatory, but do you know the difference between stocking up and cellulitis?

Many horses will "stock up" with subcutaneous edema (fluid swelling) in two or more legs (usually the hind limbs). Stocking up generally results from a significant decrease in exercise and usually resolves as the horse starts exercising again.

Lymphangitis (or vasculitis, big leg disease, staph infection, or cellulitis), however, is a bacterial infection and a dramatically different condition. While its causes may vary, it’s easy to spot once it sets in: the swelling will be extreme, hot and very painful to the touch, and the horse will be depressed due to the fever and discomfort.

If you think your equine friend has cellulitis or even if you're not sure, we encourage you to seek professional help promptly. Your horse doctor will make the best treatment recommendations, both to reduce swelling and to address any sort of bacterial infection that might be active or that could occur due to the edema in the soft tissue.

We take our stress-free feline appointments very seriously!
This is what you can expect when we come to your home to check up on your feline friend.
1. Trained vets and staff who approach all cats with gentleness and patience, allowing them to acclimate to the new surroundings-We like to have a conversation about the goals of the visit in the house before we even disturb your kitty.
2. We utilize as many low stress handling techniques as possible and we often use and recommend kitty pheromone products, like Feliway.
3. We are equipped with a Calm and Cozy Cat Wrap which allows us to safely examine and treat our anxious patients while keeping them comfortable and secure-and keeping the catitude under control! This wrap-in essence creating a purrito- acts similarly to a baby swaddle, calming our kitty patients with gentle pressure.
4. We bring kitty treats and toys to engage and distract your fur-mittens! These distractions help make the experience more positive, so the next visit is even less stressful!
5. We work at the pace that is most comfortable for your cat-whether they need a slow, gradual workup with breaks to avoid being overwhelmed or quickly get the necessary procedures done if they have a finite number of “kitty minutes” in which to work.

Reach out and we can get your kitty all taken care of!

This is a good visual for understanding what happens when a cat is declawed. Hopefully the practice is mostly a thing of the past.

If you need nail trimming demonstrations visit us during adoption days at Petco, 2005 Crow Canyon Place, San Ramon on Saturdays 11-3 and Sundays 1-4.

The Stages of Equine Skeletal Development

A horse ages roughly 3 times faster than a human. So, a 90 year old human is a 30 year old horse. Both very old, usually arthritic, don’t have many of their original teeth left, and very likely retired and enjoying the finer things in life.

A 25 year old horse is a 75 year old human. Some are still happily working but some prefer retirement and an easier life. Often depending on just how hard a life they’ve lived.

A 20 year old horse is a 60 year old human. At that point where the body doesn’t work like it use to but the brain is all there and wants to be active.

A 13 year old horse is a 39 year old human. Middle aged, prime of their life where their knowledge and physical ability are about equal.

So let’s get down to the babies and work our way up.

A 1-1.5 year old horse is getting their first adult tooth, this happens at 6 years old in a human child.

A 3 year old horse is a 9 year old child. A child. Not ready for work by a long stretch. We have moved past sending children down the mines.

A 4 year old horse is a 12 year old child. Often will do odd jobs for pocket money, maybe a paper round, mowing lawns etc. Basically a 4 year old horse can start a bit of light work experience to learn the ropes.

A 5 year old horse is a 15 year old teenager. Think they know it all, cocky, and ready to up their work and responsibilities. Still quite weak and not fully developed so shouldn’t be at their physical limit but can start building strength.

A 5.5 year old horse has just cut their final adult tooth, this happens at 17 years of age in a human.

A 6 year old horse is an 18 year old human. An adult. Ready to work.

An 8 year old horse has achieved full fusion of their final growth plates. This happens at 24 years of age in a human. This is the age it is safe to push a horse for their optimal performance.

Pushing your youngster too hard too young will result in the failure of many body parts. Joints, spine, tendons, ligaments as well as their brains. Waiting another year or two at the beginning could give your horse an extra 10 years of useful working life. Be patient with your pride and joy!

🐴💦 Anhidrosis in horses? Acupuncture can help! 💉🌿

🌞 As temperatures in Austin continue to feel like the surface of the sun, let's talk about anhidrosis in horses—when they struggle to sweat. Lots of treatment options are out there and some offer partial or short-lived effects. Adding Acupuncture can offer relief!

📍 Acupuncture stimulates the body's energy flow, benefiting horses in several ways:

1 Enhanced Circulation: Improved blood flow may support sweat gland function.

2 Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Acupuncture reduces stress, promoting balance.

3 Resetting the parasympathetic nervous system: Specific acupuncture points stimulate the nerves that help with autonomic function to return to their normal scheduled program.

4 Balancing Energy: It addresses underlying imbalances contributing to anhidrosis.

⏰ Give us a call to help get your horse sweating again! We can also help determine if there are underlying causes contributing to overheating and not sweating.

🙌 Spread awareness and help horses stay cool and healthy this summer! 🌞🐴

🌞 Summer is here, and so are pesky mosquitoes! Did you know that these tiny insects can transmit heartworm disease to our beloved pets? Don't worry, we've got you covered! At Mission Mobile Veterinary Services, we're passionate about keeping your furry companions safe and healthy. 🐶🐱

❤️ Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that affects dogs and cats. Fortunately, it's preventable! 🙌 With our top-notch heartworm prevention program, you can keep your pets protected and give them the love they deserve.

💡 Here are a few key points to remember:

1️⃣ What is heartworm disease? It's a parasitic infection transmitted through mosquito bites. These worms live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected pets, causing severe health issues.

2️⃣ Prevention is key! Our experienced veterinarians recommend year-round heartworm prevention medication, tailored to your pet's needs. Just one monthly dose or yearly injection helps keep those heartworms at bay. 🛡️

3️⃣ Schedule a heartworm test! If your pet hasn't been tested recently, it's essential to ensure they're heartworm-free before starting prevention. Our clinic offers convenient and accurate heartworm testing services in the comfort of your own home.

📞 Call us at 512-917-9663 to book an appointment or ask any heartworm-related questions. Let's work together to keep your furry friends protected and free from heartworm disease! ❤️🐾

🐶🐱 Share this post with your fellow pet parents, because when it comes to heartworm prevention, knowledge is power! Together, we can create a community of heartworm-free pets.

Horses and donkeys need dental care too! Dr. Green and the team at MMVS perform dentals on horses, miniature horses, ponies and donkeys throughout the year. The second photo shows a comparison of the smaller float instruments used for miniature horses, ponies and donkeys vs. the larger horses. Routine dental care and oral exams are extremely important for their health and well-being!
