I had a lot of pictures and encounters with this guy over the last two years. I let him pass at least a half a dozen times as a 3 1/2 year old 8pt including one on December 31st. This fall I had him in bow range 4 times before I finally sent a broad head on its way. Ironically this time I wasn’t rattling or sitting in a stand, I was walking the dog to my shop on a Sunday afternoon for a client pick up. Always carry your bow and always be ready cause ya just never know!

Good luck hunters! Just a reminder to keep more cape than you think you will need. The blue tape indicates where I would like them cut. May the good Lord bless you all with a safe and successful hunt.

To answer a lot of recent questions, yes I still do euros! From deer to moose and today I even got in a Cape buffalo. I also included a pic of a cape that was cut too short. Rule of thumb, when you think you have enough cape add a foot. I’ll cut off what I don’t need.

Couple more headed home Saturday. Remember to leave extra cape and let me cut it off where I need to, I get in quite a few that are cut off too short. Leave at least a foot of cape past the front leg. And please don’t cut off or out the front legs. Simply slit down the back of the leg where the brown and white hair meets. Thanks and good luck out there.

Once in awhile you get that trail cam photo you just gotta share. Got this one this am. Just a reminder in these warm temps hair will start slipping on your trophy within hours so please cool it down asap and keep it dry. If you put it on ice, place a plastic bag between the hair and the ice. Good luck.

One more week West Virginians! This Iowa stud is mounted on an OTS pedestal form. With bow season fast approaching I’d like to share a little advice. Whether you choose to have that trophy mounted or not, the photos you take will last a life time. Most clients like to share their photos along with their stories. Some photos are magnificent while others?…well cringe worthy. Here’s a couple of tips to help you honor your trophy.
#1 put its tongue back in its mouth.
#2 wipe off excess blood
#3 get behind the animal, don’t straddle it.
#4 tuck the legs under it so it appears bedded with its head up.
#5 prop or hold the head up by supporting it below the jaw ear area or by one antler. You worked hard for that bone don’t hide it with your big mitts.
#6 back ground is huge! Take your pics in the field from differing angles sunsets, mountains, colorful leaves all add to the photo. No truck pictures unless that’s how you harvested him, same goes for beer cans.
#7 if you hunt alone as I often do, pull your buck over to a rub and prop his head up on it, feel free to include your weapon.
#8 we live in the digital age with great cameras on most cell phones, take lots of pics and you can delete the ones you don’t like.

You put in countless hours scouting, checking trail cameras, setting up tree stands, and hunting. Makes no sense to rush now. Take ten minutes to create the memories that you can proudly show your grand kids. Good luck

Finished these up this week. Colorado cougar and a 9 1/2 # Florida large mouth. They say variety is the spice of life, but boy I can’t wait till bow season!

After and before pictures of a nice 10 point. The buck was originally mounted in WI on we believe to be the wrong cape. The ears came out orange and the hair was very short. I remounted the buck on a OTS pedestal form with an Iowa cape. As long as you still have the antlers it’s never too late to bring a trophy back to life. Only three more weeks! Good luck bow hunters.

Big bucks can really draw a fellas attention, but… the reality is this is the type of buck most of us cut our teeth on. This opening day, first buck is cool and will be proudly displayed for many years. Happy Labor Day everyone!

Back pack mounts tell a story! Your imagination is the only thing that limits what can be placed on this unique type of display. Deer, bear, elk, sheep, wolves and cats (cougars and bobs, not your neighbors, just to be clear) to name a few. With bow season on mulies only a week away I decided to post the buck I snuck up on last fall. He was definitely the smallest buck I had gotten in range of, but he offered me the best shot. The actual pack out was only about a mile down the mountain (thankfully) to my camp. The sheds and the army blanket are reminders of the extreme cold and the promise of there are always some that get away to be bigger next year. Good luck!

Only two more weeks until many of the western bow season’s open. This particular mule deer made the mistake of letting me sneak within bow range of him sept. 1st 1997. Wow that makes me feel old! I originally had him shoulder mounted to show off the cougar scars he had on his neck but time and poor taxidermy eventually caught up with him so I decided to plaque mount him. I video taped him on August 31 in full velvet but the next day when season opened I was disappointed to see he had shed his velvet over night. I took the liberty of mounting him the way I first saw him. Good luck folks.

Just something about big mulies! Most mule deer seasons start September 1st, and that’s just around the corner. This buck was a dead head my cousin found on her WY ranch. I fixed a tine, restained the bleached out antlers and mounted him on a MT cape. Why? Because I can! Oh and I love big mulies.

Here is something you don’t see every day. This buck was shot last gun season and was still in full velvet. Seems he was missing two little but very important parts of his anatomy! Not sure if he was born that way or he didn’t clear a fence or if his doe confiscated them? What ever the case his antlers never hardened. Certainly not the biggest buck in the woods but a very unique trophy nonetheless.
I have a lot of buck pics from last fall to go through but this was the last buck to be mounted from last fall, so if you still have something taking up freezer space, now is the time to bring it in.

Ten year old Mason was all smiles when he picked up his buck. Can’t imagine why? lol, my first buck was an eleven pointer, um otherwise known as a spike. I figured I’d set the bar low and work my way up, but to each their own. Congratulations Mason.

A pack mount for the hunter who has it all. This guy already had a dozen shoulder mounts adorning his walls and wanted something different. Pack mounts can be decorated any way you choose. This is the most economical way to display that bear taking up space in your freezer. Only 3 more months till bow season!
