What does it really mean to "let them go on a good day?"

It means it will be your hardest day. It won't matter if you've never done it before, or if you're gifted a dozen good days, each good day is always the hardest one.

It means they won't know what the fuss is about, why they're getting so many treats and extra belly scratches and hugs.

It means you will second guess your decision right up to the very last moment, the very last breath. You'll second guess yourself afterwards.

They'll knicker at you when you arrive, just like any other day.

The weather, perfect. They are content. They look sound today. They are breathing well, eating well, they get up easily enough from a nap in the sun....the list goes on. Whatever issue they struggle with, today they aren't.

Today you euthanize them.

This is what going on a good day means: sending them out while they are happy, while they are healthy, while they are eating well, walking well, etc. You make the choice to do it before an emergency takes the choice away from you, before your horse has to experience any more trauma or pain.

Their last memory will be filled with love.

It'll rip your heart out every time.

We can see the patterns and the increasing trends. We can predict it a little. We can obsess over the past and worry about the future.

Fortunately, horses, all animals, live in the moment. They don't worry about those things. They aren't worried about winter. They aren't worried about July, or allergies, or progressive diseases like cushings or dsld. They don't think about the close calls they've had before, and they certainly aren't thinking about the close calls that are destined to come, as their body continues to age and break down. They just are. They are happy and healthy, or fearful and in pain, on that day, in that moment.

It is the most difficult, most loving gift we are blessed to be able to give.

And that first ice storm will come, that first deep snow, that first heat wave....and you will find a little relief, no longer doubting the choice you made.

They were happy, and safe, and loved. That is all that matters.

This is number 15 & 16 this year. I’ve only seen 3 or 4 over the past 8 years! I thought the cold smell did away with them, but nope, surprise!

Look at Lincoln, now Rolex. Once that nasty cyst was removed this young man has grown into all of his glory. Forever grateful for the amazing team of vets I had , on my side, helping me. His new amazing family has done great by him. Rolex shows no signs of any further issues and he has the best family to take him to the top🙌 # #

The life of rescue is not for the faint of heart. I was blessed with giving Diamante his forever home earlier this year. He put on weight and was doing amazing until he was not anymore. I reached out to his previous owners who had owned him their whole life to let them know I was concerned with him, making it through winter, he was starting to lose weight and I wanted to do right by him. I came out this morning to find him down and he couldn’t get back up. I called a friend to help me roll him over, but he was tired and he did not want to try to get back up. My heart is broken, today we said goodbye not to only Diamante, but his mom’s legacy. I am so blessed with the months that I had with him, but It will never be enough. Rest easy sweet boy😞🙏🏻❤️

I heard it was Pus Moth caterpillar season, but was hoping not to see any. Good morning to this little guy 😳 I was about to dump the water trough and almost grabbed this little sucker. Several years ago I picked up a feed bowl and grabbed one and the same fashion. The pain was incredible and it lasted longer than a day. This is your reminder these spicy little guys are out! Watch what you grab.

Couldn’t post anything this morning because we did not have power or cell signal! What a crazy ride it was last night, but everyone did amazing. Lots of damage to the trees, but I’ll of our babies did amazing. Power just came back on, life is good.🙏🏻❤️

The amount of rain we received last night was insane. We have neighbors with much more standing water. Mother nature, what is going on! With more potential storms coming, we will continue to send our prayers to those who have been so devastated by Helene. Rain rain please stay away.🙏🏻❤️

Newt is off to do big boy things! So excited to see what this young man can do, even more excited to see what Sierra Powers can do with him😍 he wasn’t crazy loading for his first time, but he definitely did make us work for it. Can wait to share updates once he settles in. No time to take pictures as we were busy moving and grooving, but posting a recent one to share all of his gorgeousness.
