PSA- Meet Callie. Callie, being a normal young farm dog likes to eat things she finds. Callie ate some horse p**p last weekend and ended up hospitalized. She had toxic levels of ivermectin in her body from eating p**p from recently dewormed horses. The dewormer goes through the horse and remains intact in the horses’ f***s. Callie presented with neurologic signs including stumbling, twitchy eyes, nausea, and vomiting. All her bloodwork and x-rays were normal. After doing some investigating, the doctors figured out she had been exposed to potentially high levels of ivermectin. Callie was treated with supportive care and intralipids to pull the toxins out of her brain. She is feeling a lot better and headed home today. Just a warning- ivermectin horse dewormers can affect ANY breed of dog or cat (some are even more susceptible) for approximately 5 to 7 days AFTER deworming if the p**p is ingested. Make sure to appropriately dispose of any used dewormer tubes and make sure any pets have little to no access to horse p**p after deworming.

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

It’s ultimately your decision to wear a helmet or not, and I won’t judge either way, but I hope you’ll never feel embarrassed if you do choose to wear one and that you would never judge someone else for wearing one. Helmets can save lives! And they make some really pretty ones now too! My favorite brand is Ovation. I like the fit, style, and that they’re adjustable. Whatever you choose, happy riding!

I’ve been on trail rides with this little one and she is a rockstar! Would be a great addition to your lesson horses or a new best friend for your own littles.

Say hi to Penny. The newest member of my family. I adopted her from an old neighbor and she is settling in well. I had been able to pet sit her a few times in the past and felt so honored when I was asked to become her forever home.

Zira is part of our Barn Cat Program and she is looking for an insulated barn, stable, or other structure where people can provide her with food, water and needed vet care (depending on her comfort level). In return Zira will patrol your property and keep it rodent-free! Zira isn’t especially fond of humans so she is considered an ideal “working cat.”

Cats in our Barn Cat program are used to being relatively self sufficient and independent. They prefer limited or no interactions with humans. While they may be able to form some degree of positive relationships with people, they may still choose to keep their distance. They may also eventually let people touch them and even pet them with time and patience. They do sometimes form relationships with other animals too, which can reduce their desire to roam.

Zira is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed. Please e-mail [email protected] if you’d like more information on Zira or our Barn Cat Program!

WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR THOSE TRYING TO EVACUATE THEIR HORSES FROM UKRAINE
This letter was posted by a horse owner and natural trainer who is literally stuck in Ukraine, unable to evacuate with her horses. SO many horse owners in Ukraine will NOT leave the country without their horses. Here's her letter:

"My dear European friends who offer help every day! I want to describe a bit of a situation.

A lot of you offers transportation for horses from Ukrainian borders to anywhere. You should know that it's impossible or almost impossible for majority of us, because:
- not possible to find drivers. Our men are not allowed to cross a border.
- too difficult to find available trailers inside Ukraine now
- we have block-posts and check-points everywhere during a way to any border. On this check-points ordinary cars spent 1,5-2 hours standing in crowd.
- terrible, no, TERRIBLE crowds on ALL borders. People spend several days in their cars. How can it be for horses in trailers? Crowds lasts kilometers!
- roads are not safety because of military status. Big trailer can be taken out for needs of army. Or if the trailer travels in the districts of fire, it can be simply shot.
- problems with fuel during the trip. A lot of fuel stations are closed.
We are very-very grateful from the heart for all your offers of help and for your braveness and humanity! But you have to realize that the only possible way for horses to be evacuated is to create green corridors with some convoy.

If any of you have such possibilities or know any international organizations that can provide green corridors for horses straightly from the stable to any country of Europe you could rescue a lot of horses and riders. If you know such brave European drivers who are ready to come inside of Ukraine and pick up horses with other animals and people, it can work!

I don't know to what international authority should I write and ask and beg for creating green corridors with convoy for horses!
It can save many lives even now!

One of the reasons we built our second barn 23,000 SF 👇🏻

To work one on one in a quiet arena with Jackson! His needs are different than most but the quiet private space gives us room to cater to him and other students with disabilities.

Jackson’s not comfortable riding yet but is working hard towards learning to hitch! Our LARGE arena offers the perfect classroom for him to thrive!

He loves his time at the barn and always brings treats for the horses AND dogs! 🥰

The IRIS program has approved our facility as a vendor and funds his time at the barn twice a week! An incredible opportunity for us all! ❤️
