🌧️ Tips for Storing Hay During Wet Months 🐴

Proper storage of hay and feed during the wet winter months is essential to keeping your horse and other livestock healthy.

Check out the following tips to keep your hay and feed dry!

✅ Covered Storage: Protect hay in a barn or shed with a sturdy roof.
✅ Pallets: Stack bales on pallets to prevent ground moisture and improve airflow.
✅ Ventilation: Space out bales to allow air circulation for proper drying.
✅ Tarp Protection: Use tarps to shield hay from rain if storage is exposed.
✅ Avoid Overstacking: Leave space between bales to prevent trapped moisture.
✅ Regular Checks: Monitor moisture levels and inspect for mold growth.

Thank you to our friends from for these great tips!

💡 Preventing and Treating Hoof Abscesses: What You Need to Know 🐴

Hoof abscesses can be incredibly painful for your horse, but with proper care and management, you can help prevent and treat this common issue effectively. Here's what to keep in mind:

🛠️ How to Prevent Hoof Abscesses
Maintain Regular Hoof Care: Routine trimming and farrier visits keep hooves healthy and less prone to cracks or issues.
Avoid Extreme Conditions: Wet environments soften hooves, while very dry ones can cause cracking. Manage moisture exposure carefully.
Muck Stalls and Pens: Keep your horse’s living areas clean and dry to limit bacterial exposure.

💊 Treating Hoof Abscesses
Veterinary Diagnosis: A vet will use hoof testers, blocks, or radiographs to locate the abscess.
Drainage: Relieving pressure is essential—your vet may create a small opening to drain the exudate.
Poultice or Bandage: After drainage, applying a poultice helps draw out remaining fluids and keeps the area clean.

Regular hoof care is your best defense, but remember: even the best-maintained hooves can still face abscess challenges.

"When securing blankets, make sure that the snaps/clips are facing inward, toward the horse! If they are facing out, they can easily become stuck on something, like the hay net in the picture."

🌟 Have you thought about giving your performance horse a well-deserved winter break? 🐴❄️

In the Three-Day Eventing world, many horses enjoy 4-6 weeks off between the last show in November and the first one in January. This rest period might include turnout, trail rides, tack walking, and easy hacks — giving your horse a chance to recharge.

About 3-4 weeks before the season starts, training intensifies again to prep for competition.

No matter your discipline, planned rest periods can help your horse recover from minor injuries, enjoy a mental reset, and benefit from varied, low-stress activities. 💙

How do you give your equine partner a break? Share your tips below! ⬇️

❄️ Winter Horse Care Tips: Keep Your Equine Healthy All Season Long 🐴

Did you know that horses with moderate coats need extra calories when temperatures drop below 50°F? Here are some essential tips to keep your horse healthy and happy during the chilly months:

1️⃣ Check Body Condition Regularly
Your horse’s body condition score helps ensure their diet is meeting winter calorie demands.

2️⃣ Stay Ahead of Health Concerns
Winter can worsen issues like dental problems, metabolic disorders (like Cushing’s), or gastrointestinal concerns. Regular vet checkups are key—especially for senior horses, who are more prone to challenges in cold weather.

3️⃣ Fuel Their Energy Needs with Forage
Hay is your winter MVP! Add 2 pounds of hay for every 10°F drop in temperature. Know your horse’s needs—nutrient-dense hay for those needing weight gain, and moderate options for easy keepers.

4️⃣ Prioritize Hydration
Horses drink less water in winter, increasing the risk of colic. Ensure 24/7 access to clean, warm water (heated buckets can help!).

5️⃣ Meet Vitamin & Mineral Needs
Hay alone won’t provide enough vitamins like E, which degrades over time. Use supplements or balanced feeds to fill in the gaps.

🍂 Fall Mud Management Tips for Your Barn! 🍂

Keeping mud at bay in the rainy season can make a big difference for your horses' health and your barn’s upkeep. Here are 4 practices to help manage mud this fall:

Install Gravel Paths: Adding gravel to high-traffic areas reduces mud buildup and provides better footing.

Build Proper Drainage: Ensure that water has a way to flow away from paddocks and stalls to avoid pooling.

Create Sacrifice Areas: Designate a small paddock for turnout in wet weather to keep larger pastures from becoming muddy.

Regularly Clean High-Traffic Areas: Daily removal of manure and soiled bedding can greatly reduce mud and protect your horses’ hooves.

With these simple steps, you can keep your barn area safer and cleaner all season long!

We all know that things can be hectic during the holiday season and that it is easy to rush when at the barn.

Instead of a frenzied 15 minutes of being chased, lunged or round-penned suggests a more mindful and relaxed approach to working with your horse this season that lowers the incidence of injuries.

Jec suggests a brisk 15 minute walk, wandering around some obstacles and ground poles as an alternative.

Round-penning or chasing around a horse that is not warmed up can result in the concussive forces ending up in the cartilage because the joints are not warmed up or well-lubricated. Additionally, joint proprioceptors are de-activated, gymnastic muscles stiff, and postural muscles remain grossly under-utilized. All of which can be a set up for injury.

So do yourself and your horse a kindness this holiday season and slow down, relax and take a mindful approach to your time at the barn.

📸 Ever wonder what chronic laminitis looks like inside a horse’s hoof? Here’s a peek at a radiograph showing the condition from the inside.

In cases of chronic laminitis, we can see a significant rotation or sinking of the coffin bone within the hoof. This happens as the laminae—structures that support the coffin bone—become inflamed and weaken over time. This instability can cause intense pain and permanent changes if left untreated.

If you notice signs of lameness or discomfort, don’t wait. Early diagnosis and management are key to supporting hoof health. 🐴

💡 Did you know? For years, thrush was thought to be a fungal issue, but we now know it’s actually a bacterial infection affecting horses’ hooves. The main culprit, F. necrophorum, thrives in moist, dark areas, often settling in the grooves around the frog or the central cleft of the hoof.

👃 How to Spot Thrush:
+ Foul odor
+ Black, watery discharge
+ Tenderness around the frog
+ Deep fissures near the heel bulbs or frog degradation

🏇 Prevention and Treatment: Regular exercise is key to prevention! Movement promotes healthy blood flow in the hoof, keeping it strong even in muddy or damp conditions. For mild cases, clean and treat the hoof with an anti-thrush solution. For advanced cases, consult your vet for thorough debridement and additional treatments.

Keep your horse’s hooves healthy with proper trimming, regular hoof care, and a clean environment. 🐴

Winter weather can lead to reduced water intake in horses, increasing their risk for dehydration.

Adding electrolytes to their diet is an effective way to encourage consistent water consumption, as these minerals stimulate thirst, helping to maintain adequate hydration.

Proper hydration supports your horse’s circulation, digestion, and overall muscle function, even in colder temperatures.

While you can buy electrolytes, adding 1-2 tablespoons of regular table salt also works as a more affordable option!

🐴 Curious if you should blanket your horse this winter? 🌬️

While it holds true that horses are inherently equipped to retain warmth without the aid of a blanket, the decision to blanket or abstain should be contingent on your horse's individual requirements.

Factors such as age, overall health, physical condition, shelter availability, cold tolerance, and activity level play a role in determining whether your horse could benefit from added warmth. For example, a sleek "show coat," struggles with weight maintenance, or advanced age might call for the extra protection provided by a blanket.

To learn more check out our guide on blanketing your horse this winter.
