Interesting Case Alert!

Take a look at this photo from a case treated by Dr. Benson. What initially appeared to be an immune-related eye issue turned out to be caused by bacterial ulcers.

When it comes to eye problems in horses, prompt treatment is key. A “wait and see” approach is not recommended, as delays can lead to more severe complications.

If you have concerns about your horse’s eye health, don’t hesitate—give our office a call.

Managing Gastric Ulcers & Enhancing Natural Feeding Habits

Preventing and managing gastric ulcers can be easier with these simple steps:
✨ Provide frequent small forage meals
✨ Reduce stress
✨ Use ulcer-preventative medications during high-stress periods

One effective way to support your horse’s digestive health and mimic their natural grazing behavior is by using slow feeders. Horses are natural grazers, spending over 14.5 hours a day foraging in the wild. However, modern feeding practices, such as two large meals or limited foraging opportunities, can disrupt this pattern and lead to obesity or other health issues.

A study by the University of Minnesota showed that small and medium-holed hay nets:
✅ Slow forage intake
✅ Reduce overconsumption
✅ Extend foraging time to 10–13 hours daily

This simple, affordable approach helps your horse stay healthy and happy while more closely mimicking their natural eating habits.

Did you know eye issues can show up as unusual behavior? A spooky horse or a horse who has trouble jumping straight could signal vision problems, even if their eyes look normal.

If your horse is acting differently, it might be time for a closer look. Their health and performance depend on clear vision!

Understanding Rain Rot in Horses 🌧️🐴

Rain rot, also known as rain scald or dermatophilosis, is a skin infection caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis. While usually dormant, this bacterium can become active under wet conditions, leading to painful skin lesions, often along the horse’s topline, rump, face, or legs.

🔍 Who's at Risk?
✔️Horses with lighter coat colors
✔️Young, senior, or immune-compromised horses

Prevention Tips:
✔️ Practice regular grooming and bathing.
✔️ Minimize exposure to prolonged wet conditions.
✔️ Maintain clean, dry living areas.

Treatment Tips:
✅ Use an antimicrobial soap designed for horses to gently clean affected areas.
✅ Keep your horse dry and reduce exposure to wet conditions.
✅ Separate affected horses to prevent spreading.

Rain rot is manageable with good hygiene and prompt care. For severe cases, consult your veterinarian. 💙

🐴 Winter Tips for Horses with Osteoarthritis ❄️

Featured in this photo is a radiograph showing osteoarthritis in a pastern joint— cold weather can be tough on arthritic joints.

Here are simple steps you can take to keep your horse comfortable:

💪 Gentle Exercise: Keep them moving to maintain joint flexibility.
🌾 Warm Up: Always start with a thorough warm-up to reduce stiffness.
🔥 Provide Ample Shelter: Provide a warm dry space for your horse to get out of the elements, you might also consider bedding to help encourage your horse to get off their feet as well as blanketing in the colder months.
💊 Joint Support: Talk to your vet about supplements, medications or other treatments to support joint health.

🌧️ Tips for Storing Hay During Wet Months 🐴

Proper storage of hay and feed during the wet winter months is essential to keeping your horse and other livestock healthy.

Check out the following tips to keep your hay and feed dry!

✅ Covered Storage: Protect hay in a barn or shed with a sturdy roof.
✅ Pallets: Stack bales on pallets to prevent ground moisture and improve airflow.
✅ Ventilation: Space out bales to allow air circulation for proper drying.
✅ Tarp Protection: Use tarps to shield hay from rain if storage is exposed.
✅ Avoid Overstacking: Leave space between bales to prevent trapped moisture.
✅ Regular Checks: Monitor moisture levels and inspect for mold growth.

💡 Preventing and Treating Hoof Abscesses: What You Need to Know 🐴

Hoof abscesses can be incredibly painful for your horse, but with proper care and management, you can help prevent and treat this common issue effectively. Here's what to keep in mind:

🛠️ How to Prevent Hoof Abscesses
Maintain Regular Hoof Care: Routine trimming and farrier visits keep hooves healthy and less prone to cracks or issues.
Avoid Extreme Conditions: Wet environments soften hooves, while very dry ones can cause cracking. Manage moisture exposure carefully.
Muck Stalls and Pens: Keep your horse’s living areas clean and dry to limit bacterial exposure.

💊 Treating Hoof Abscesses
Veterinary Diagnosis: A vet will use hoof testers, blocks, or radiographs to locate the abscess.
Drainage: Relieving pressure is essential—your vet may create a small opening to drain the exudate.
Poultice or Bandage: After drainage, applying a poultice helps draw out remaining fluids and keeps the area clean.

Regular hoof care is your best defense, but remember: even the best-maintained hooves can still face abscess challenges.

What’s your best tip for preventing hoof abscesses? Let us know below! 👇

"When securing blankets, make sure that the snaps/clips are facing inward, toward the horse! If they are facing out, they can easily become stuck on something, like the hay net in the picture."
