“I’m a breeder 24/7 🫶 At your end, you just call or write to inquire about the price, and you’re shocked. You have no idea. You have no idea how challenging it is to be a breeder. You have no idea how much it costs for a puppy to reach two or three months and go to its new home.
Many fall by the wayside and die in your hands, for various reasons: prolonged labor, small size, etc. Sometimes, even after days or weeks without sleep, trying everything for that puppy without success. You have no idea of the desperation it causes; you lose all your strength, and for a moment, you think it’s not worth it, contemplating giving it all up for a “normal” life. But you see them looking at you, and you carry on.
For you, who emphasize finding cheaper options, you have no idea. No idea about the expenses a kennel has, before and after. Over all these years before and after, the parents live because in the home of a breeder who loves their dogs, they die of old age, maybe at 15 or 16. You’ll find dogs that have never reproduced or only reproduced once, then were spayed/neutered. No, don’t compare me to a commercial farm or factory, because it’s like comparing an artisan to an assembly line.
No, you have no idea when you think this is just a business, that we live off our dogs. Business is when you take from one side and give to another. Let me correct you: we live through and for our dogs. It’s 365 days, 24 hours. It’s not an 8-hour job where you go home and forget about it. No, they don’t understand weekends, holidays, or if you have a headache. Your whole life changes when you decide to be a breeder. Your home changes; it will never be hair-free. Dog beds and toys will be in every room. Your fridge will have dog food, and goodbye to black clothes. If you had a white leather sofa, forget it; a fantastic Jumbo blanket will cover it. Your car will change too; if you liked cool sports cars, now you’ll have a van with no space. Your electricity and water bills will skyrocket. You’ll be a shareholder in bleach brands, floor cleaners, absorbent rugs, air fresheners, and mosquito repellents. You’ll buy 99% of your clothes from Decathlon, and your shoes will be Crocs (closed in winter, with holes in summer). You’ll see your family and friends less, and when you meet them, you’ll undoubtedly be the last to arrive because you had to get your dogs ready before leaving.
If you have a partner, they’ve won the lottery because either they’re a fighter like you or have infinite patience. And that’s with luck because with the life we lead, staying alone is the most normal thing. No, we’re not easy to understand. It’s not easy to understand that, to be honest, we put our dogs before anything and anyone at some point.
But we love what we do, and that’s why we do it because it’s something you put your whole heart into and cannot be conceived otherwise. No, you have no idea. If, after talking to a breeder and listening to them talk about their dogs or visiting their home, you think they’re just production animals, we don’t ask for extra recognition or for you to feel sorry, pity, or compassion. We ask you not to destroy what we do and love 🙏
Thank God, there are many people who appreciate our efforts, and when they incorporate a puppy raised by us into their lives, they appreciate all the work behind it, so they can now enjoy that earthquake that is a source of pride from decades of dedication. Thank you to all those people who repeat getting dogs from the same breeder and recommend us to anyone who asks.
Thank you because, for a breeder, there’s nothing better than seeing their dogs happy and having fun in their new home, and all the suffering, pain, and defeats that often happen are forgotten when we see the person we helped come to life and be happy.
