These three swarm traps are finished and ready to ship to their new home in Tennessee. Usually, I get back orders out within a week, but these have taken longer due to our trip to the Okie Homesteading Expo. I'm working to get these out the door this morning with high priority. Best wishes for swarm catching success to the new owner!

Business growth šŸ“ˆ by the pin metric:

At the end of 2024, I hung this map in my office and placed a green pin for each website order for the year. I continued adding pins this year, using blue to mark each order in 2025. Before the end of March, I've already used more pins than I did for all of 2024.

Thank you to everyone who's placed an order; I truly appreciate your business. This has also caused some (welcome) growing pains and identified a need for more capacity, but this is all an exciting part of the process.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have back-ordered swarm traps to paint and ship.

This post is more of a personal note than anything about bees or gardening. This picture was taken at a family reunion several years ago, where I met Quinton - the other man in this photo. Quinton is a distant cousin; his grandfather and my great grandfather were brothers. Sadly, Quinton passed away not long after this reunion.

At the Okie Homesteading Expo this last weekend, I met a couple who seemed surprised when they learned my last name. They started asking me if I had family from a certain town - which happened to be Quinton's home. It turns out that the husband's brother had married Quinton's sister.

It may be a big world but sometimes we get reminded of how connected we are to those around us. If the couple from South Dakota happens to see this, I hope you enjoy and will share this photo with other members of Quinton's family.

We're home from the Okie Homesteading Expo where we had a great time meeting new people, seeing old friends and sharing information about natural beekeeping. It was a great event and a privilege to participate as a vendor. I'm already looking forward to next year.

Now I'll be working to fill orders that have stacked up during our trip, including finishing and shipping backordered swarm traps. It's good to be busy!

If you're interested in a homesteading lifestyle, you should plan on attending the Okie Homesteading Expo and learn from my friends, Jason, Julie and Bella Kreke. They've made an amazing transition from urban to rural living and their story may be helpful to you.

We're very excited to welcome Jason, Julie & Bella Kreke as speakers for the 2025 Okie Homesteading Expo!

āœ… Get to know them:

Jason and Julie and their eleven children live on a homestead in Missouri. Their daughter Bellaā€˜s passion for animal husbandry led the way through their homesteading journey over the last decade. They raise cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, and rabbits on less than 3 acres, and have a 3,000 square foot garden. They are passionate about helping people leave the suburbs and jump into homesteading with both feet, encouraging them to take action on their passions and then perfect their skills along the way.

In a terribly timed incident, my cell phone fell, broke, and was rendered unusable during the return trip from the Homesteaders of Iowa conference. Getting a replacement should have been a quick process but has been more troublesome than I expected. Finally, the replacement phone is expected to arrive tomorrow. I appreciate all of the great connections I made at the event in Iowa, but if anyone has tried to call this week, I haven't received your messages yet. Once I get my new phone activated, I'll work to return any messages.

We briefly ran out of stock of lemongrass oil swarm lures, but Mrs. Sodbuster put in work overnight to replenish our supply. Swarm lure kits are available in the Sodbuster Shop on suburbansodbuster.com.

Catching swarms is a great way to get free, locally adapted bees, and lemongrass oil is used as an attractant to lure swarming honeybees into a bait hive. The oil simulates the bees' Nasonov pheromone, which they use to communicate and attract other bees from their colony to a location. A little oil goes a long way and too much is not beneficial, so slow-release plastic tubes can be used to hold the oil which gradually permeates through the plastic.

These kits contain 10 ml lemongrass oil in a dropper bottle and 12 slow-release tubes, which is enough tubes and more than enough oil to bait 6-12 swarm traps.

Our January was cold with snow & ice on the ground for most of the month. Last week we had a warmup that melted most of the snow, and now I found these dandelions! Mother Nature is going to strip a gear if she keeps shifting seasons without a clutch!

A viewer recently commented about the use of powdered sugar for managing mites in beehives. Below is that comment and my reply:
Viewer: In the 80s old beekeepers, and still today, use powdered sugar poured onto the top of the hive directly on the bees, getting them to start grooming each other. Mites fall to the bottom tray that has diatomaceous earth to kill the mites....
