In short, the answer is ... NOTHING!!

Unless you are in or near the path of totality, your animals will most likely not even notice the event. To them, it will appear no different than a dark storm cloud rolling through!

If you are in an area where it is likely to get fairly dark, your pets may act as though they normally would when the sun begins to set. They may start to get sleepy (or active for our nocturnal friends!), or they may be very confused as to why they are not being served dinner at the correct time!

Unless you are concerned about your animals escaping, there is no reason to worry about keeping them indoors during the event. They are not really aware of the significance of an eclipse, and won't try to stare at it - and neither should you without appropriate eye protection!!

This is the amazing breeder that I got Flora and Fauna from! They are the sweetest and most gentle souls 💚

If you are interested in having rats as pets, I highly recommend working with a great breeder like Moondance Tails! Of course I will always advocate for rescue, but especially if you are new to owning rats as pets, it is definitely worth going to someone who breeds pet quality rats from lines that are meticulously selected for health and temperament.
