The Laughing Lizard: Price List & Terms of Service
Price List (updated 12/8/2021)

Shipping is $10 on most orders, message me at facebook.com/laughinglizardreptiles to order. Payment is via PayPal or email invoice that doesn't require a PayPal account

***Cold Weather Shipping Reminder***

We're entering the season of post office holds and heat packs. Please check your local temperatures before ordering. If the low temperature in your area is 60F or colder, your order must be held for pickup at your local post office to be covered by our live arrival guarantee.

If the low temperature in your area is 50F or colder, a heat pack ($3) must be added to your order in addition to the hold for pickup.

During periods of extremely cold temperatures (30F or colder) where I am located or where you are located, your order may not be shipped until a safe shipping window is available. We will do our best to check your temperatures at the time of ordering, but it would be greatly appreciated if you can notify us of extreme temperatures where you live when you place your order.

I know a hold at the post office or delay in shipping can be inconvenient, but a dead order is worse. I want to make sure everyone’s orders arrive alive. Thank you :)

If you have already placed an order for Monday, it will ship on Monday. I apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to returning on the 12th after the expansion is complete :)

What Are Bio Bugs?

Not quite sure exactly what a bioactive terrarium is, or what the bugs do? Check out the answers to some frequently asked questions...

What is bioactive?
A bioactive terrarium is self-maintaining. Custodians (aka the clean up crew, or cuc) keep the substrate clean by eating any mold or fungus that grows in it, along with dead plant matter, animal waste, and left over food/insect pieces.

Do I need more than ons kind of custodian?
A good clean up crew includes a variety of insect types. This helps to keep the different populations balanced and ensures the substrate is kept as clean as possible.

What kinds of custodians are there and what do they eat?
The most ommon custodians are springtails, isopods (aka woodlice, pill bugs, rolly pollies). Others include dubia, mealworms, superworms, and millipedes.
Springtails are very tiny and are available in a variety of colors & sizes. They eat mold that grows in the substrate. They can also be fed with white rice grains (they eat the mold that develops on it), fish food flakes, and commercial springtail food.
Isopods are a bit larger and are also available in a variety of colors & sizes. Isopods eat dead plant matter, like leaf mould, leftover feeder pieces, and animal waste.

Will the bugs bite my animals?
No, these bugs are detritovores which means they only eat decaying organic matter, mold, and fungus.

Will my animals eat my clean up crew?
Maybe! Some herps are more interested in eating the custodians than others. If your animals do snack on the isopods and springtails, they are a completely safe food source.
Other custodians, like millipedes and mealworms, may not be suitable for some setups. Some millipedes produce a toxic substance when threatened and can poison an animal if eaten. They should be avoided if your animal might bother or try to eat them. Mealworms should also be avoided if your animal cannot properly digest their hard exoskeleton but will try to eat them anyway. Mealworms don't hold up very well in humid conditions either, superworms would be a better choice.

Do I need live plants if I want a clean up crew?
No. Plants are not necessary for a clean up crew to survive. If you do have plants, any leaves that die and fall of the plant will be a nice snack. However, they aren't a requirement for a bioactive setup.

Will custodians survive in my desert terrarium?
Yes, if there is moisture somewhere. This can be around and under a water dish/bowl, or under a rock in the tank. The custodians will venture out to the drier parts of the tank, then return to the moist areas.

How often should I clean my bioactive terrarium?
This is the best part, you don't have to clean! The bugs do it for you :)

Where can I buy springtails and isopods?
I will have cultures of springtail and dwarf purple isopods available in the coming
