Today is a bittersweet day. Today is my last official day as the owner of Walk, Wag, ‘N More. Lauren and I started this business from the ground up. This was my very first baby. I’m now entrusting my baby to the new owner, Kelly Liddle.
Below is a picture of a client that sums up our business. The chocolate lab on the right is almost 12. I’ve been taking care of him for over 10 1/2 years. I remember the days of worrying about him jumping on my growing belly (my first human baby!). He always loved to terrorize his older sister. He would steal whatever toy she was playing with and just bug her like a typical little brother. Sadly, she has passed. The black lab on the left is her grandson. Payback is full circle!! The puppy is now giving it back and the chocolate lab has now become the old man dealing with the much younger and much stronger puppy. Visiting them for the last time yesterday, I was in tears. With this family, I’ve been through my two pregnancies, their wedding, them moving to a new house, their dogs death, and now the addition of another puppy.
I have loved being a part of each and every clients life. Thank you for welcoming me into your homes and allowing me to care for your pets. It’s been an honor and a privilege.
I don’t know what the next chapter holds for me, but I will be enjoying some much needed family time. And probably crying a few more tears 😢. I’ve given you all I had for over 11 years, thank you for giving so much of yourselves as well 💕🐾.

Anyone looking to adopt a shepherd?

Anyone looking to adopt a shepherd?

Meet Kayla! She is a two year old German Shepherd. Kayla is a very sweet girl and true to her shepherd breed, she always wants to be with her person. Kayla didn’t get the best start in life and can be fearful of new people, places, and things. Once she trusts you however, she will be your shadow and loves snuggles and giving kisses! Kayla is a goofy girl who enjoys walks, chasing and wrestling her foster brothers, and playing with her squeaky toys. She is looking for a patient, mellow home with another mellow and easy going dog; she gains confidence from her canine friends and is less fearful with them around. Kayla has some mild separation anxiety (she is not destructive, but gets upset and stressed out- she is a shepherd after all!), someone who is a homebody would be ideal. She is not good with cats. Kayla is spayed, micro-chipped, heart worm tested, and up to date on vaccines and parasite prevention. Apply to adopt at www.petsalivewny.org

Silvia needs to be rehomed. This is what her mom has to say about her.

Silvia is such a happy, loving little lady. She snuggles, gives lots of kisses, and loves to fetch her purple ball. She readily greets people on the street when we’re out for a walk, and she’s affectionate toward children and adults. She’s not noisy, seldom barks. She has a funny habit of separating the dried peas in her food from the tastier bits. She’s a real charmer.
Breed: Yorkshire Terrier-Shih Tzu
S*x: spayed female
Age: 6 years 3 months
Weight: 7 lbs.
Color: brindle
House-trained
Lives inside loose, no crate
Medications: flea, tick, heart worm prevention
Vaccinations: current
Vet: Thorn Avenue Animal Hospital

CATS NEED TO BE OUT BY FRIDAY MORNING!! Posting for a friend that is heartbroken that she can’t keep her cats
Princess Cheese Puff (white paws) 13yo and Sebastian (ear tips) 10yo are two of the sweetest kitties you'll encounter. They've known one home their entire lives, so this past year has been tough for them. They thrive on stability and would do well in a home where affection is given often! Both are spayed and healthy. They get along with dogs, cats, and children.
Puff is Sebastian's mom. Both are very affectionate: Puff right away, where Sebastian takes a bit to warm-up. Both are healthy and are always there for a snuggle, especially when you need it most.

"Sneeze Now for $500" OR: Why it is Impossible to "Reinforce" Your Dog's Fear

The #1 talk I give to my clients is this: Stop correcting your dog for growling, lunging, barking when he is stressed and scared. You cannot punish what is not a voluntary behavior. Start giving him treats. Because you also cannot reward an involuntary behavior.
Don't actually worry about changing what your dog DOES at all, but what your dog FEELS.

Let's take a step back. The English language fails to distinguish between voluntary behaviors (sit, down, begging for food, walking well on leash etc.) and involuntary behaviors/reflexes (such as blinking, sneezing, vomiting, panting). All feelings are involuntary behaviors. Dogs cannot make themselves "feel" a certain way.
Try to make yourself feel surprised for a second - doesn't work, does it. We need an external event or stimulus of some kind to produce this emotion.
Sneezing is an involuntary behavior. If someone promised you $500 if you sneezed right now, could you do it? No. If you were slapped each time you sneezed, would that make you never sneeze again? No. Rules of training as we know them change as soon as we are working with involuntary actions.

When your dog gets scared by a trigger, and reacts with growling, barking and such, he is simply exhibiting the emotion he is feeling. This is not a voluntary behavior that can be manipulated by rewards or punishments.
We cannot decrease his emotion by using punishment, just like we cannot increase it by using rewards. But we can reprogram his brain to link a new emotion to the trigger.
This new emotion should be calm. Positive. Relaxed. Happy. Content. SAFE.
So this is the setting we need to produce: Calm. Positive. No corrections, no reprimands, no leash pops, no time-outs (this actually increases your dog's state of anxiety - linking corrections to the trigger will not make the trigger, and you, seem more appealing, quite the contrary: they will feel more threatened every time).
Instead, high-value treats, high-value toys, touch (if your dog responds to that), safety. If your dogs feels safe instead of threatened, he will not react anxious and unpredictable.

If you change his emotional state, you don't need to worry about his actions. Any actions he will carry out in a calm, content mindset will be appropriate: sniffing, wandering about, lying down. A content dog won't growl and lunge.
Try to change involuntary actions and you will lose (just like you lost the $500 because you couldn't sneeze on the spot). Instead, alter emotions and watch your dog's actions also fall into place.

A lot of people are unaware, this is a great read!

A lot of people are unaware, this is a great read!

Most owners are unaware of the dangers of using a laser pointer with your dog. They will cause neurotic and obsessive behaviors you can't fix.

If anyone needs a spring cleanup in their yard, read this article. I’m happy to see a young couple taking such great care of their dog!

While many SPCAs have an abundance of surrendered dogs due to health issues, one Buffalo couple is striving to do everything they can to help their dog, Lug, with his.
