I tend to wait to name my animals until the *PERFECT* name hits me. This girl is about 7 months old, and she's been a keeper since the day she came out of the egg.

So without further ado, meet Moira Rose, in honor of the great Catherine O'Hara 💜

I definitely won't be spending the entire weekend watching Schitt's Creek 😢

My heart breaks for the animals lost in this tragic fire. Reptile Gardens has held a special place in my heart since I was a child. I can't imagine the grief that the staff are going through; it's truly an animal keeper's worst nightmare.

Four more tests came back negative for crypto, including one of my breeders that was just tested a second time to make sure I didn't miss her "shedding (oocysts)" period. I am feeling more comfortable every day and have built a routine that keeps these animals as safe as possible. I am going to continue testing, but I hope to be back in the game early next year, barring any positive tests.

Another 8 samples, another 8 snakes cleared of cryptosporidium. Turbo, my first hoggie, was in this round, so I'm feeling a little extra relief this time.

That brings our total tested to 24, which includes most of my breeder hogs. The only positive animal came from a breeder that has been exposed as selling crypto-positive snakes, so I am hopeful that he came with it and I have avoided spreading it with strict biosecurity measures.

I may do one more round of tests before brumation, and I will be testing again after I wake everybody up in the spring.

It feels like there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Round 3 of crypto tests is going out tomorrow. The wait for results is one of the most stressful parts of this whole ordeal. Wish us luck 🤞

Just a tiny sigh of relief today. The results from our second round of tests, from a different group of snakes, showed all negatives. Although we still have months of testing ahead of us, this is a step in the right direction. Many of these snakes will be tested multiple times in the coming months, as the infection may not show up in f***l samples during certain times of the protozoa's lifecycle, so false negatives happen.

But for now, we're celebrating this tiny victory ✌️

Week 2 of our crypto journey has been quiet. I'm over feeling sorry for myself... it's time to buckle down and do the best I can for the animals that still need me.

Tuesday, I was able to find some peace working in the baby room. My babies have always been quarantined in a separate room from the main group, and although I don't believe that there is any possible way that these kids could be compromised, I am still being incredibly careful not to cross-contaminate between bins.

We sent 8 more tests from different snakes off to RAL - I am hoping I will hear from them tomorrow. Wish me luck! I will keep you all posted 🤞

Thank you all for your overwhelming support in this difficult time. My reptile room has always been my "safe space" but walking in there now just fills me with sadness and uncertainty. The pressure to not slip up, even a little, with biosecurity is harrowing. To not be able to freely hold my animals without feeling like I am putting them at risk is heartbreaking.

I would not wish this on anyone.

That being said, the many words of support that I have received over the past day have kept me going. I truly cannot thank you all enough 💜💚

Today, I got the most devastating news a hognose breeder can get: a positive cryptosporidium test. With crypto seemingly popping up everywhere lately, I decided to do some random testing within my crew. I very recently found out that the breeder I bought this snake from has allegedly KNOWINGLY been selling crypto positive animals for years, so this boy was definitely going to be included in the first round of tests. He has never shown a single symptom, so I was still a bit surprised that he did test positive. Unfortunately, for the safety of the rest of my crew, this seemingly healthy boy had to be euthanized.

The good news: I sent in samples from 7 other animals throughout the reptile room, and every one of those tested negative. I am hoping my germophobic tendencies around biosecurity have saved any others from being infected, but time will tell.

In the meantime, I will not be selling any animals. The coming months will be spent testing many more of the snakes in my crew and hopefully getting many more negative tests. I am terrified for my animals and devastated by the loss of my boy today. Please be patient with me as I try to find a way forward for Schock and Aww Reptiles.

What are, most likely, our last babies of the season are hatching!

Although it was a super quiet season with only 3 small hognose clutches, we have been blessed with nothing but healthy, chunky babies so far. I'll take it 💜

I'm not sure how much more time I can spend trying to get this girl's color to show up halfway accurately on camera. She is BRIGHT in person... I guess you'll just have to trust me! 😂

Mystery child from the last clutch was a Purple Haze (Evan's Hypo and Lavender)!
