Travis and Taylor aren’t the only thing invading your news feed / local waterways. Asian carp were first brought to the United States in the 1960s and 1970s to control algae and parasites in fish farms and wastewater treatment ponds. Unfortunately, flooding allowed them to escape into rivers connected to the Mississippi River Basin, where they quickly spread due to their rapid reproduction and lack of natural predators.

Since then, populations of bighead and silver carp have exploded throughout major waterways such as the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois Rivers. Their steady advance north has raised alarms about their potential entry into the Great Lakes through man-made canals connecting the river system to Lake Michigan.

Asian carp threaten ecosystems by consuming enormous amounts of plankton, depriving native fish of food, and outcompeting entire populations. In many regions, the carp can make up over 80% of the local biomass. Silver carp are also notorious for leaping out of the water when startled, creating hazards for boaters and disrupting recreation.

If they establish themselves in the Great Lakes, Asian carp could devastate the region’s multi-billion-dollar fishing industry and alter one of the world’s most important freshwater ecosystems. Companies like Archway are doing what they can to limit the population and utilize the protein, but the threat of irreversible damage looms large.
