Puppy mills come in all shapes and disguises. These commercial dog breeding operations may sell puppies in pet stores, online, or directly to the public through classified ads. However, puppy mills all have a lack of medical care, nutrition, housing, grooming, sanitation, and socialization in common. Essential aspects of humane animal care are usually thrown to the wayside to maximize profits and produce as many litters of puppies as possible.

Remember, even if you feel sorry for the puppy and purchase it just to “rescue” it from the sad situation, this is buying into the system. These breeders still profit off that puppy and this allows them to continue the vicious cycle. 💔

Please choose adoption. There are so many deserving pets waiting at your local shelter. 💕

❤️ If you know the manufacturer of your pet's microchip and have their specific microchip ID number, you can contact the manufacturer or use their website to ensure your information is accurate.

🐾 If you don't know the manufacturer but have the microchip ID number, you can use it to search via the WAGTOPIA.com microchip lookup tool.

🔎 If you don't know your pet's microchip ID number or the manufacturer, you can visit your local veterinarian or shelter. They'll be able to read your pet's microchip and give you more information.

🏡 Make an appointment today if your pet is not microchipped! A registered microchip can make a huge difference for lost pets or in case of emergency.

Remember, microchips do not act as GPS. Therefore, your information must be correct to ensure you and your pet can be reunited.

Posted • We are in a national crisis! Shelter directors across the country are calling me in tears. They are having to make tough decisions on highly adoptable pets. This morning the director called me in need of help. A transfer of pets that was scheduled to go out this week was cancelled leaving her shelter at more than maximum capacity. She has 150 cats as well as a hundred plus dogs with no where to go. Her message isn’t new for me. I have been hearing the cries and listening to the pleas for help for at least 6 months. The time has come. Innocent pets are being euthanized across the country. Highly adoptable dogs, cats, kittens and puppies are dying for no reason other than space. Yep! Reality. I can hardly sleep at night. My team is working so hard for placement of pets with little success. Shelters are full!! Only you with your choices can make the differences. Without you there is no tomorrow. These kittens featured are in need of help. Please reach out to Oktibbeha County Humane Society if you can help.

On this K9 Veterans Day, a heartfelt thank you to all the Military Working Dogs out there, past and present.

Did you know dogs have served with U.S. soldiers since the Revolutionary War?

Dogs have even earned their jump wings, jumping to the aid of downed airmen during World War II.

All military dogs are eligible for adoption after their term of service has ended. Most go home with their current or former handler.

March is Pet Poison Prevention Month!

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So it is with poison prevention.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) these common human foods are toxic for pets:

* chocolate
* xylitol (often found in sugar-free gum)
* macadamia nuts
* grapes and raisins
* onions
* garlic
* alcohol
* caffeinated drinks
* raw yeast dough
* raw or undercooked meat

If you ever suspect your dog or cat ingested one of these food items, contact your vet right away.

Posted • This is incredible, last week had our most successful Empty the Shelters adoption event in the history of our foundation. Over 15,294 pets were adopted in a two week period, in 245 shelters across 45 states.

BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event is the largest funded adoption event in the country. It is a win for families, a win for pets and a win for the shelters. A program that promotes ADOPTION. Pets are vaccinated and spay/neutered saving pet adopters about $250.00 with BPF covering their adoption cost. Most importantly these adopters are saving a life.

Each event is continuously more successful than the last.
