Why train a search dog to work off-lead?
Increased range & efficiency
Adaptability to various search conditions
*Less handler error, cues, and bias*
HRD K9 Seven demonstrates working reliably while elevated at a distance of 300 yards, locates source, and communicates the find.
Visual cues aren’t the only problem to mitigate during training.
Dogs are clever and can follow the scent of another person or dog to an odor source, even if we don’t know its location.
HRD K9 Rambeaux locates an odor arrow without help from non-target scent trail cues.

We’re at it again for the very first time! Au’s first introduction to HRD using @scik9.mm TADD, and clicker marking for behavioral shaping. First with approach to target odor, then with lowering body, then a full down, which will be continually shaped and reinforced to hold his position until released with a reward. The down was offered by Au, which makes this behavior an ideal choice for his trained final response.
