GONE 😢
RIP.... your life mattered

“I’m a Cowboy, baby!” COWBOY’s name suits him. He looks like nothing so much as a big, huge painted and mottled steer and he weighs in at 85 lbs! But unlike a lumbering steer, Cowboy is an enthusiastic, wiggly boy who is highly social and very sweet. And he is an athlete who will chase down any ball you throw and dutifully bring it right back to you, waiting with excitement for the next toss! He doesn’t even realize his size of course, these big boys never do, but he has us captivated with his magnificent looks and his big, generous heart that (at least initially) he will not give away so freely. So before you just grab him and hug him, take a moment, because he needs just a little time to get to know you and then he can make that first move! Despite his size, even a big guy can feel overwhelmed in the overcrowded and chaotic shelter, and Cowboy is no exception. Cowboy has started to deteriorate in his kennel because he just wants to be out and about and enjoying his life. Sitting in a small kennel almost 24 hours of the day amidst hundreds of other dogs all hoping for attention, is hard for him. And so the shelter decided to put him on a list to die and now this poor kid has only 48 hours to find a home. Just look at him. Look at his big smile. How can we let this gorgeous dog leave the earth. We can’t. So please, if you are an experienced foster or adopter who can save his life, hurry and MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance!

The Shelter Writes:
Dressed to impress everyone in the wild west!! Cowboy's fun patchy colors are just a glimpse into his adventurous spirit. Cowboy was found loose in a playground, he tried to play with the police officers who found him - but they were all business and brought him straight to ACC (their loss!) Cowboy needs a home without kids that are too small, cause he's a big and energetic guy!

COWBOY, ID # 201767, 4 Yrs. Old, 85 lbs., Male
Brooklyn ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Brown/White
I came to the shelter as a Stray on 6/4/2024
Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Only
No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner
Medical Behavior Rating: 2. BLUE

AT RISK MEMO:
Cowboy is at risk due to his extreme barrier frustration, which includes behaviors such as lunging, baring teeth, hard barking, growling, and bouncing off his kennel door. He also exhibits handling sensitivity, displaying whale eyes, lip licking, and head whipping when touched. These behaviors indicate a high level of stress and discomfort in the kennel environment, making it challenging for handlers to manage him safely. Cowboy has CIRDC and has been started on treatment.

Cowboy came into the care center as a Stray and has shown Social behavior with handlers, he has shown to enjoy treats and toys. Cowboy has not adjusted well in the care center and exhibits several challenging behaviors. He has displayed fearful and potentially defensive aggression, including leash biting and snapping at handlers when they attempt to leash him. In the kennel, Cowboy shows significant barrier frustration, characterized by lunging, baring teeth, hard barking, growling, and bouncing off his kennel door. These behaviors indicate a high level of stress and discomfort in the kennel environment, making it difficult for handlers to manage him safely. Despite these issues, Cowboy has moments of gentleness and calm, taking treats gently and engaging in play and walks with a loose and wiggly body when he feels more secure. Cowboy is available for adoption/foster through one of our new hope partners.

06/16/24 Cowboy is gently walking to the front of his kennel. Cowboy is leashed with ease as he walks into the loop of the lead. Cowboy is taken for a walk. Cowboy displays a neutral, still frame while trotting beside the handler. Cowboy takes treats gently when administered. Cowboy will stiffen when touched, side-eying the handler. The handler returns Cowboy back to kennel where he lightly trots back in the building and enters his kennel with no issue.

06/15/24: Cowboy is sitting at the front of kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. Handler offers him chicken which he takes gently and he's easily leashed. Cowboy walks with a loose leash at the side of handler out for a street walk. Cowboy checks in with handler throughout the walk (looking up and making eye contact). Handler gives Cowboy a toy and he shakes it around and carries it for a portion of the walk. He is returned to kennel without issue.

6/14- Cowboy is seen growling and lunging at his kennel bars, it observed neighboring dog is standing and growling beside his kennel baring teeth, when handler backs away cowboy starts to kennel fight with neighboring dog growling and jumping on the side wall of his kennel. Cowboy is seen jumping up lunging in kennel and hard barking when handlers are walking past with a dog.

(PM) An ACS reports that Cowboy was growling at them and snapped at their hand as they were trying to leash him to go outside.

06/12/24: Cowboy is laying down in the back of his kennel upon handler’s arrival then immediately jumps up to walk to the front of kennel allowing handler to leash him with ease. Cowboy is brought to the play yard and a drag leash is placed on him to roam the yard freely. cowboy is loose and wiggly while in the play pin, handler will throw a ball and Cowboy will retrieve it and bring it back to handler with a good drop, Cowboy takes scattered treats from handler then will run off chasing birds. Cowboy is brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely.

06/06/24: Cowboy stands at the front his kennel wagging tail upon handlers arrival. Handler leashes cowboy with ease and he’s brought outside for a walk. While exploring the grass and dirt paths cowboy maintains a neutral form while staying close to handler and checking in periodically. 06/05/24: Cowboy is neutral in his kennel upon handler’s arrival but allows easy leashing and proceeds to the behavior room without issue. Handler places a drag leash on Cowboy and he walks around exploring the room with a neutral form, secondary handler handles him and he starts to head whip demonstrating a discomfort for touch. cowboy is brought back to his kennel safely.

Cowboy is leashed with ease and walks slowly, with a loose body out to play yard for gate greets (see Dog-Dog for further details). Going slowly, handler was able to collar him. Another handler attempted to remove harness and Cowboy became still and turned his head back toward their hand showing discomfort. Handlers were able to unclip both sides of harness but it was too tight to pull over head so the rest of harness was cut off while Cowboy was distracted with treats. Cowboy approaches when called and accepts pets around neck. Returns to kennel easily.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of intake:: 6/4/2024
Summary:: Friendly

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial:: 6/4/2024
Summary:: easy to handle

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:
Place with a New Hope partner
No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments::

No children (under 13)- Due to Cowboy's Behavior challenges we recommend an adult-only home at this time.

Place with a New Hope partner - Cowboy requires a specialized approach to help him overcome his behavioral challenges and thrive in a new environment. Cowboy's reactivity, especially towards other dogs, and his discomfort with physical handling and snapping at handlers when leashed indicate he would benefit from a structured training program focused on desensitization and positive reinforcement. He responds well to gentle handling and can take treats calmly, showing potential for improvement with the right guidance. Cowboy enjoys playtime and walks, indicating that regular exercise and enrichment activities will be crucial for his well-being. A calm, experienced handler who can provide consistent training and a stress-free environment is essential. Cowboy needs to be fostered/adopted through one of our New Hope Partners.

Potential challenges:
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Leash-biting
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Handling/touch sensitivity
Kennel presence
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition

Potential challenges comments::

Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: Cowboy takes treats with mild pressure, indicating he needs to develop better bite inhibition. To address this, use positive reinforcement techniques such as rewarding gentle behavior and providing appropriate chew toys. Consistent training and clear boundaries will help Cowboy learn to interact with people more appropriately. Please see handout on Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition:

Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Cowboy has shown handling sensitivity around his neck and face head whipping, lick lip when handled in those areas, likely due to the scabs and scratches on his face and muzzle. It is crucial to proceed with patience and allow Cowboy the autonomy to withdraw from any social interaction if needed. Gradual desensitization and positive reinforcement can help Cowboy become more comfortable with handling. Please see handout on Handling/Touch Sensitivity.

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Leash-biting- Cowboy has displayed leash biting in the kennel when a handler tried taking him out of his kennel for a walk, Cowboy snap at the handler hand.

Kennel presence/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Cowboy has displayed lunging, baring teeth, hard barking, growling in his kennel, bouncing off his kennel door.

Level 2! They keep killing these perfectly adoptable dogs after giving them huge doses of drugs. Please Forster or adopt him. CBD would most likely help him.

GONE BUT FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS.

The volunteers call this beautiful pup an angel, well mannered, well behaved, house trained, and so easy on the leash. But this angel has a broken wing, it is not a reason to kill him. Kingston had a seizure at the ACC, it could be brought about by the stress of the situation, maybe a side effect of the Trazodone the ACC is giving him, or it cauld be he has epilepsy. Whatever the cause is, it is best for him to get out of that place ! The ACC IS OVERCROWDED and OVERWHELMED, they can’t take good care of him ! This angel needs help ! Please help this beautiful boy who only needs a hero !

A Volunteer Wrote: Kingston, who came in as a stray, must have gotten lost on his way to teach a class at charm school, because this perfectly behaved angel will steal your heart--right before he steals into your lap. Kingston tap dances with excitement when you're about to take him out, and then he rewards you by attempting to smother you in kisses. He's a total gem on the street--so easy on the leash you'll check to make sure it's still attached, even when other dogs walk by and give him the side eye. Of course he appears beautifully housetrained, and while he doesn't seem to care at all about treats, he will do just about anything for ear scratches and butt rubs (preferably while in your lap). We would do just about anything to see Kingston in a loving home pronto--he was fearful when he came into the shelter, and who can blame a dog who's patiently longing for a family to call his own? Kingston is going to be someone's very special soul dog.

Social, friendly, handsome Blondie has been given the euth command!

Super friendly, affectionate, and sweet, Blondie is facing his final moments. This pup has done nothing wrong. He arrived at the ACC, all friendly and social, he behaves well, he stands in front of his kennel, easily leashed and easily managed. Yet the ACC finds fault in this sweetheart that the volunteers call a CUDDLEBUG! Truly a difference of perspective.

Our volunteer writes,

BIG CUDDLEBUG BLONDIE, as sweet and social as his photos show. What you see is what you get, a joyful boy who is good with everyone, humans and dogs alike. Handsome, always cheerful, Blondie is becoming anxious at the ACC, after all, he’s there now for 3 months, with NO INTEREST! His anxiety at being cooped up 23/24 hours a day is manifesting as jumping on the handlers, and being mouthy. Please help this beautiful jolly boy find a loving home. He’s so deserving, sweet and loving, full of innocent joy. He just doesn’t understand what he’s doing in a shelter when he knows he should be in a home. Please get Blondie seen, it’s the only way this pup will get out alive !

Please have a look at this sweetheart of a dog, how he poses, his sweet smile, how he gamely wears a headgear in his pics without taking them off. Dogs like Blondie who love to be with people, they tend to be anxious because they hate being caged up for 23 hours. This pup is a great boy with proper decompression. Please don’t let them to what they plan to do with this great pup. Please help him find a loving home so he gets to live and continue spreading his love.
Please hurry, he has only a few hours.

Hi everyone...

My name is Cliff. I'm feeling quite sad as I share my story today because my original family decided that I would become an "until dog," and they surrendered me back to Home for Good Dog Rescue.

At just 7 months old, through no fault of my own, I’m back to looking for the forever family I deserve. My previous family didn't follow Home for Good's guidance upon adoption. A few weeks ago, they took me to a dog park, where I was viciously attacked by another dog. I needed emergency veterinary care, and a drain had to be placed due to the severity of the bite. They didn't inform Home for Good about the severity of the situation and ultimately returned me because they felt I was "too much." Not to mention, they also said they work too much and don't have time for me...But I'm just a puppy… I really don’t understand what's going on…or why they even adopted me in the first place??? What were they thinking???

Dog parks can be quite dangerous for several reasons. First, you have no way of knowing the temperament or health of the other dogs present, which can lead to unexpected and potentially severe altercations. Second, the risk of disease transmission is higher in these environments, as not all dogs may be up-to-date on vaccinations. Additionally, the excitement and unpredictability of so many dogs in one area can lead to anxiety and stress, especially for younger pups like me. This is why Home for Good advises strongly against dog parks.

Back in the warm and loving care of a foster home, I am patiently waiting for my home for good that will love me forever, not just when it's convenient. I’m about 60 pounds and only 7 months old. As a Great Dane mix with very long and lean legs, I am sure to be a big boy once fully grown. So, if you are in search of a big and handsome mush, I am just your guy. I really am a lovebug. I am housebroken, learning to walk well on a leash, and also crate trained. I'm a big goof who simply cannot wait to find my family - big or small. Please apply to adopt!

To adopt me, please visit www.homeforgooddogs.org.

Thank you for reading my story.

❤️,
Cliff

GONE BUT FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

EUTH COMMAND ISSUED FOR STUNNING GIRL CHLOE WHOSE OWNER MOVED TO A PLACE THAT DOES NOT ALLOW PETS. YOU CAN SEE THE HEARTBREAK IN HER FACE KNOWING SHE IS GOING TO BE LEFT BEHIND BY HER OWNER. SHE NEEDS YOU NOW.

Urgently needs a good home by June 11, 2024

Poor little Chloe, a sweet 5-year-old female dog, has had a rough go of it lately. This affectionate and highly social pup was tragically dumped at the local animal shelter, leaving her feeling scared, confused, and overwhelmed by the constant bustle and noise of the busy facility. Despite her friendly and playful nature - she simply adores chasing after squeaky toys and cuddling up with her favorite humans - Chloe is quite a sensitive soul who tends to shy away from other animals, often preferring to hide in quiet corners to avoid any stressful interactions. The poor dear is clearly longing for the comfort and security of a loving, peaceful home environment where she can take her time getting acclimated to new people and surroundings at her own gentle pace. With her affectionate personality and endearing love of playtime, Chloe would make the perfect companion for an owner or family who can provide her with the extra patience, understanding and low-key, quiet atmosphere she craves. This sweet girl deserves to find her forever home with a family that will shower her with the love, stability and TLC she so desperately needs after the trauma of being abandoned. Chloe is sure to blossom into an even more loving and joyful pup given the chance to thrive in a calm, nurturing environment.

Drax is in need of a new home. His owner no longer has time for him. He lived with children and other dogs. He is friendly and playful. He is good with cats too and is playful with them. Please open your heart and home to this wonderful boy. See below the volunteer notes.

A Volunteer Writes: This Wonderfully Squishy Boi captured my heart the minute I leashed him for his walkies!. He is a bit overwhelmed by the shelter & shy, not timid, just wondering what all the fuss is about...Once outside, he's great walker! He sticks right to your leg. Sometimes a little too close. I admit I winged his toe beans once or twice but I have some big feet! We walked into the nearby park and sat on a bench and he pet and snuggled me for a bit. Yep, he pet me with his squishy jowls! And I reciprocated, with some butt skritches. Heaven! Don't pass this Boi up! Adopt this Cropped! You won't regret it!

A Volunteer Writes: Drax is the BEST boy! We love him even more than he loves baths, which to hear his former owner tell it is almost as much as he loves snuggles and hanging with his peeps (he previously lived with two dogs and two young kids). We could NOT agree more about how amazing this pup is-kind, affectionate, showing off his knowledge of many commands, fabulous on a leash, and house-trained, of course. (We also agree with his former owner's assessment of "he drools a lot," but he makes it look good.) Whether we are playing fetch with him, dodging his kisses, or just wondering how one dog can be so dang cute.

One year old Amora has been given the euth command !

TREMBLING AND MAKING HERSELF LOOK SMALL, poor puppy girl Amora has NO SUPPORT NO INTEREST. Given several chances on the kill list already, she has no one. The whole world has forgotten about this young girl’s life, as if her life doesn’t matter. No one is helping her, no one is sharing her. 😔💔

She was brought in by the police in a crate, there’s no info on her, but she’s so scared she wouldn’t come out of her crate. She visibly shakes, shelter staff noted even when outside in the yard. We wonder what life she had had to make this one year old girl so deathly afraid of people.

There is one thing that makes Amora perk up, AND SHE IS HAPPY TO SEE HER OWN KIND!!!! She’s a dog that loves dogs, she feels safer with them. Amora is already spayed, someone took good care of this baby, but somehow something went wrong.

This is a loving sweet under socialized puppy, she is so scared at the ACC. We know she will be better once out of that scary place, like many of the petrified pups who are lucky to have survive this death camp. Please get this puppy girl Amora safe and out of this place that scares her so much. She needs to be seen, please help her !
She has only hours to live, comment here, message us or email us if you can save Amora’s life!

Puppies are adorable, yes we agree! But we also agree that they're a responsibility, and if you're not going to give them the time to train them, then don't get one! If Shadow looks familiar, it's because he was here before. He was returned after a day due to them not being able to handle a puppy! Seriously, only a day! Now this handsome young boy's life is on the line! Shadow likes toys and being petted, but can get nervous. But remember, he's only been there for a day, so he wasn't given adequate time to adjust to his new environment! And instead of devoting the right amount of time to work with Shadow, they gave up on him and returned him the very next day! Shadow's life is now on the line again, and it's up to you if he lives or dies! Please save this 2 year old hunky boy!

It seems that Shadow was taken to a dog park the first day and that was too soon to be meeting other people etc.

A volunteer writes: We have been getting to know Shadow over the past few weeks, and each time we meet him its better than the last. He is as playful as they get, so we offer him a very special toy. An enormous stuffed dreidel - big even for 63lb Shadow! But as expected he is up for the challenge. He manages to pick it up and literally gallops around with it. I don't even know if he can see past it, but Shadow isn't worried at all, he is just happy to be out with us playing and being a dog!

Shadow bit the owner's jacket and the jacket was shredded in the process.

Medical Notes
No reported medical concerns.

For a New Family to Know
Owner described him as friendly playful and excitable. When at home he likes to be in the same room as his owner. He likes to play with balls stuffed squeaky and chew toys. He has been kept mostly indoors and will sleep on a dog bed next to his owner's bed. When left alone in the home he will destroy thing left on the floor, so he is crated when his owners are not home. He is used to walks on the leash. When on the leash he pulls hard when off leash he will wander but comes back when called.

Behavior Notes:
During intake he allowed the counselor to take his picture with no problems. When the counselor went to collar him, he became stiff and tucked his tail. No further handling was done.

upon intake: staff placed the slip leash on Shadow as the owner couldn't control him. Staff was able to remove his collar in admissions, when staff attempted to remove his sweater his body got stiff. He was walked back to his kennel.

Shadow was surrendered back to BACC due to him over-escalating and biting the new owner's sister. The bite did not break skin, but the new owner tackled Shadow to get him off of her. Shadow's nail caught the owner's lip and left a welt behind. Shadow bit the owner's jacket and the jacket was shredded in the process. Shadow has also been reported to be destructive in the home when left alone and be a strong puller on walks. He was initially fearful in the care center and has demonstrated a lack of basic manners and impulse control, mouthiness, and a low threshold for arousal. Due to these concerns, we recommend he be placed with an experienced foster or adopter through one of our New Hope partners.

Shadow was surrendered because his recent guardian of 4 months could no longer care for him. He is pure exuberant, and jumped to wiggle and greet staff that came out to meet him during his intake. While he was nervous his first few days, tucking his tail when having a collar put on him for example, these days he is happy to see someone show up at his kennel to take him out for a walk. Shadow has been observed to soften and loosen up when he sees another dog.

Summary:: According to his previous owner, Shadow has spent time in the home with other dogs and he is relaxed and playful. When playing with other dogs he can be somewhat rough.

11/16/22: Shadow is not collared at the time due to nervousness. While on-leash at the Care Center, Shadow is introduced to a novel female dog via gate greet. he approaches, initially nervous and then displays a loose body and wag, play bowing slightly and whining due to a prolonged greet.

Summary (3):: 1/27/23 When the handler approaches, shadows kennel, he is standing in front of the kennel barking and licking his kennel bars the handler offer some treats which he takes. The handle it opens up his kennel door and easily leashes him, and walk him out of the kennel room and into the hallway. Once hallway, shadow begins to jump on the handler and hard pulls down the hallway. Once outside shadow pulls towards the playyard door, handle it take shadow inside the play yard and attached the drag leash to his collar. When the handler tries to take off the rope shadow grabs onto the rope and runs around the play-yard with it. That begins to toss him treats and tennis balls which he then drops the rope and the handler picks up the rope and hides it from him. Shadow begins to jump on the handler and becomes mouthy and starts biting on the handlers jacket sleeve with slight pressure. The handler tosses him treats and have him perform cues to distract him which he begins to perform “sit” and “lay down “. The handler re-leashes him and he begins to jump on the handler then stops and hard pulls back into the center. Once in the hallway Shadow hard pulls towards the kennel rooms and is placed into his kennel without issue.-DF

1/26: on Shadows AM walk handler tried to take him out of the gate where he pulled the handler into the play yard and refused to be walked elsewhere pulling hard on the leash Shadow started jumping up and trying to bite the leash and Sweater of the handler.

Summary (4):: 1/26 in kennel: Shadow was observed to bounce off the kennel walls when the closest neighboring dog also becomes anxious. He begins bouncing off the door and the kennel walls while wailing. Both dogs simultaneously feed off each other's anxiety and stress. Shadow and the other dog become fixated on each other and begin barking at the corner of the kennel at each other.

12/11/22 When handler approaches kennel, Shadow is laying down. When Shadow hears the kennel door unlock, he gets up on all fours. The handler leashes Shadow and he calmly exits the kennel. The handler takes Shadow directly outside for a walk. While walking, Shadow takes beef treats gently and doesn't touch any of the chicken. Shadow is also given a toy to walk with because he kept jumping on the handler. When returning to the facility, Shadow jumps up again, this time wrapping both arms around the handler's leg, and hu***ng it. At first, Shadow wouldn't stop, not taking toys or treats, until taking a treat directly out of the handler's hand. After that, the handler immediately returns Shadow back to the facility, where he enters his kennel with no issue.

11/27/22: Handler approaches Shadow kennel where he standing at the front of his kennel vocalizing; he displays a loose body and wagging tail. Handler tosses treats where he accepts and allows handler to easily leash him. Outside kennel room he moderately pulls down hallway with tail tucked. Once outside of center shadow quickly relieves himself and remains in a calm loose leash. Shadow notices other dogs across from him and ignores them and continues on walk. Shadow begins to 'Sit' to solicit treats from handler. After sometime shadow is led back into center where he allows handler to collar and reclip his leash. He is taken to his kennel without issue.

11/26/22: Handler walks in front of Shadow kennel where he displays whale eyes and a tucked in tail. Handler offers treats which he accepts and comes to the front of his kennel; handler easily leashes him. Handler leads Shadow out of kennel room and into play yard. Once in play yard, he displays a curved nervous body with a tucked in tail and seeks exit. When Shadow notices another dog, he softens and displays a loose wiggly body and wagging tail. He becomes anxious and frustrated due to not being able to greet the dog on the other side of the fence and he whines but remains soft/wagging. Handler reclips his leash and he's taken back into his kennel without

Date of intake:: 1/15/2023

Summary:: slip lead as owner unable to handle, allowed collar removal, stiffened when abdomen touched

Date of initial:: 1/28/2023

Summary:: treat motivated, likes petting, wags tail, but sometimes stop and gives a nervous stare, lied down

ENERGY LEVEL:: His previous owners describe Shadow as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 11/28: Shadow was observed to demand bark

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Shadow's fearfulness, mouthiness, and low threshold for arousal, we recommend he be placed in an adult-only home.

New Hope Only: Due to Shadow's fearfulness, overarousal, and bite history, we recommend he be placed with an experienced foster or adopter through one of our New Hope partners.

Potential challenges: :
Fearful,
Bite history (human),
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,
Basic manners/poor impulse control,
Low threshold for arousal,
Destructive behavior,
Strength/leash pulling,
Separation anxiety

Potential challenges comments::

Destructive behavior: Shadow was noted to be destructive in the home when left alone. Shadow should receive enrichment while alone to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Destructive Behavior.

Basic manners/poor impulse control: Shadow jumps on familiar staff in a friendly manner. He should learn to sit and wait when meeting new people. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control.

Mouthiness/ poor bite inhibition: Shadow has a hard mouth while taking treats. He should be encouraged to settle and relax before taking treats and praised when he does so politely. See handout on Mouthiness.

Fearful: During the handling portion of his assessment, Shadow was nervous. He should be given time to acclimate to new people and situations. Please see the handout on Decompression.

Bite history (human): Shadow has one bite on record. He was let off leash at a park by previous adopters and began to play with the adopter's sister. Shadow bit the owner's sister on the butt. The bite did not break skin, but the owner tackled Shadow to remove him. The owner's jacket was shredded and she received a welt on her lip in the process. See handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.

Separation anxiety: Shadow has been reported to be destructive when left alone in the home. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. He would do best in a home where a person is at home for a large part of the day or with a plan so he is not alone for long periods of time. See handout on Separation Anxiety.

Strength/leash pulling: Shadow is a strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.

Low threshold for arousal: Shadow has demonstrated a low threshold for arousal and easily gets overexcited during play or other exciting events, jumping and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach shadow to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Shadow. See handout on Arousal.

Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form

Shadow is in need of emergency placement due to behavior concerns. Shadow was returned to the care centers due to a bite incident in the home that did not break the skin. In the care center, Shadow was observed to have a low threshold of arousal on walks. He jumps on staff, mounts them, nips, and grabs their clothes. Off-leash, Shadow was aroused and escalated to biting with moderate pressure but did not break the skin. Medically, Shadow is apparently healthy.
