Did you know that mental enrichment for our dogs is just as important as physical exercise? Many problem dog behaviors occur because of lack of mental enrichment. Our dogs are naturally problem solvers and if we do not provide an outlet for these kinds of behaviors our dogs will find their own. This often results in bad behaviors like counter surfing, getting into the trash, or inappropriate chewing.

We don’t post much to facebook, but we thought we would let our followers know about our new YouTube channel. Tomorrow we will be helping Toledos PET Bull Project with their free park event! Free rabies and DHLPP vaccines will be administered, everyone that attends will receive free training with their dog, and any old leashes or collars will be replaced. Information on how to take advantage of Toledo PET Bull’s projects dog food pantry and information on how to take advantage of low cost spay/neuter will also be provided. If you know anyone that needs help taking care of their pet, please let them know about this event!

It is that time of year again! As we approach the 4th of July more and more people will begin setting off fireworks. This can be a very difficult time of year for dogs with noise phobias as they are exposed to more and more scary bangs and booms. Please help us congratulate Megan on her certification as a professional dog trainer knowledge assessed through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers! Megan has been a valuable part of our team for the last nine months assisting with our group classes and private trainings. This spring Megan took the next step in her training career and became certified through CPDT. We are very proud of Megan and all she has accomplished! We know Megan will do great things to help the dogs she trains!

At 𝐓𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐨’𝐬 𝐏𝐄𝐓 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 one of our missions is to provide affordable training to the local community. Unfortunately, many local training classes now cost hundreds sometimes thousands of dollars! It is our belief that high quality training should be available to everyone, and that is why we have priced all our class to be 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 $𝟏𝟎𝟎! Many of the dogs currently at local rescues or shelters are there due to a lack of training and control on the part of the owner. By training your dog you not only get a better-behaved companion you build a bond that lasts a lifetime!

Our trainers are some of the most qualified in the area and all hold high-level certification. We use positive reinforcement to teach the dogs’ behaviors we want them to perform. This means that our training classes are great for the entire family to participate in!

Our rescue is currently offering:

•𝐏𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: make your puppy confident and happy around other dogs,
people, and in new situations.
•𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐈: teach your dog the basics such as: Sit, Down, Stay, Come-When-Called,
and Loose-Leash Walking.
•𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐈𝐈: build on the behaviors learned in GMI but with more emphasis on
loose-leash-walking and working around distractions.
•𝐑𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐎𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: work as a team to complete a course with your dog.
•𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: learn fun tricks such as: roll-over, play dead, spin, paws-up etc.
•𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭: You get officially certified through the AKC when you and

Our dogs’ behavior and health is greatly impacted by their genetics. In the United States we put great emphasis on the way a dog looks, but often neglect to breed for more social and well behaved dogs. We see this often with puppy mill dogs. These dogs are often extremely inbreed and under-socialized. If you buy a purebred dog it is important to buy from well established reputable breeder. As the data in this study shows mixed breed dogs my be our best option in the future for healthy and social dogs.

From Clive Wynne: This is an enormously important paper. The study included nearly 50,000 dogs from 227 breeds - It shows that:

Purebred dogs are on average genetically equivalent to brother/sister or parent/offspring mating. Some breeds are a bit better, but others are much worse

Purebred dogs need more vet care than mixed breeds. Some as much as 29% more each year and small dogs are generally healthier than large ones. Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs have the most health issues.

The paper shows that with modern understanding of genetics it is possible to breed dogs with all the morphological & behavioral traits people seek but without the negative health impacts of excessive inbreeding. There just has to be a will to call on the geneticists for help.

Max recently achieved his CPDT-KSA certification(Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge and Skills Assessed). This certification requires the trainer to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and skill in learning theory, teaching, and training practices. Just over 200 trainers hold this tittle worldwide.

This week we worked with some of the dogs at Unfortunately in the shelter environment dogs have to spend long periods of time in their kennels. Many behavior problems occur because of boredom and lack of mental simulation. We worked with the kennel staff to set up an enrichment area where the dogs can explore, use their noses, and get some mental stimulation.

This setup does not have to be anything elaborate. Most of the items we used were just laying around the shelter. You can see how much fun Rambo the dog in the video is having the first time he gets to play in the enrichment area! As dog owners it is important to think about our dogs mental enrichment. Thanksgiving can be a tempting time for our pets. Be carful with these foods when preparing the holiday meal. Do not leave your dog unsupervised in the kitchen and make sure you take out the trash after the meal is done. The temptation to steal food or raid the trash can be to much for some dogs to resist.
