Today is Throwback Thursday. Today's Throwback is Norwegian, Swedish, Canadian and American Champion Tortasens Bjonn II. . Whelped in 1952 by CH Bamse x CH Moa and bred by P.J. Holseng of Norway, this dog was imported and owned by Mr. and Mrs. A. Well Peck of Pitch Road Kennels, Connecticut.

The following excerpt is from the book, "My 60 Years With Norwegian Elkhounds" written by Olav Campbell, in which he discusses "The Evolution of the Norwegian Elghund in the United States of America".

Discussing dogs imported from Norway, Mr. Campbell states, "In 1940 8 imports were registered from Norway and 4 from England, and it was not until 1949 imports were resumed [after the war] - one from Sweden. During the next decade, 1950-1959, the number of imports increased - 31 from Norway,6 from U.K., 1 from Sweden and for the first time from Canada (2); a total of 40.... An outstanding import from Norway in that period was Champion Tortasens Bjonn II - a proven stud, purchased by Mr. A. Wells Peck. I judged this dog the first time he was shown as a puppy, and saw him a number of times later - also as a veteran. To me he was as close to the ideal of the Standard as is possible to come. Tortasens Bjonn II was sold only because he was not a loshund such as his owner, Dr. Jesper Hallingby, was accustomed to have for hunting in the dense woods of southern Norway. It is interesting to note, however, that the dog came from the Trondelag area where only leash dogs are used for hunting..."

CH Tortasens Bjonn II had a stellar show carrier in America, becoming the first Norwegian Elkhound to win the Hound Group at Westminster in 1959.

Many of our Norwegian Elkhounds alive today can trace their lineage back to this wonderful dog.
