The Trusted Companion Dog Training I've had dogs growing up my entire life, but in February 2011 I rescued my first dog in my adult life from the local SPCA. Let’s get started!

My name is Brant Weller and I've had years of dog training experience rehabilitating anxiety and aggression, training amazing obedience as well as tracking and scentwork which has led me to starting The Trusted Companion. He is an 80 lb pitbull-lab mix I named Reginald or, affectionately, Reggie. A few months later, I adopted Reggie's new boxer-mix brother, Manny. I loved these guys very much, but

I loved them in the wrong way and fostered an anxiety in them which would soon turn into aggression. They were so happy and loved playing with each other and with other dogs, but unaware of what I was doing, I created the anxiety and a severe aggression in them towards other dogs. This put many other dogs in the vet as well as Reg and Manny in the vet numerous times. They were my family, though, and I had to help them. This became my focus for the next several years. Through the process, I became a professional trainer for a large company, traveled the country learning from some of the best trainers in the business, and began The Trusted Companion. I have successfully rehabilitated my dogs. They are living out the rest of their years happy and confident. They no longer feel the need to attack each other or other dogs. I've since introduced a Samoyed into our pack and not only does everyone get along fine, they are relaxed and confident around the hundreds of new trainees that have come through my doors. I made it my goal to be good at rehabilitating anxiety and aggression in dogs because I had to help my dogs. Along the way, I learned how to help many others and to improve confidence in dogs through teaching them a new relationship with their owners, how to let go of the things that cause them so much worry, and how to engage and refine their primary sense of smell. In my years as a trainer, I have trained hundreds of breeds and am confident I can help your dog relax and become more confident with you and with their environment! Holidays can be hard on even the best-trained dog, but staying consistent doesn’t have to be. When things get busy, small adjustments to your dog’s routine can help them feel calm, confident, and in control.

Ways to stay steady:
- In busy places, keep commands short and clear.
- Use the same crate or bed, even when you're traveling.
- Keep short, daily training or participation sessions to maintain structure.

Puzzle toys and intentional, structured play help your pup stay fulfilled and keep their brain working.

Don't let the holidays mess up all the work you've done. Keep up the good work with your dog training. To learn more, go to thetrustedcompanion.com.

“We are just absolutely thrilled with all that she has learned over the past 3 weeks. She went to Brant not really listening to commands, unable to be off leash outside, harassing the cat, jumping on people when they came into the house. Since she’s been home, she is so much calmer. She is so much fun to play with when people come to visit. ...She’s no longer jumping on our guests and she’s not harassing the cat any longer.

We are really excited about our future with Cary and the things we are going to be able to do with her, and we highly recommend Brant to anyone who is looking to train their dog especially by using play and praise as a way of training. If you are looking for a trainer, Brant is certainly the person to go to.”

Dogs are great at picking up on human tone, but studies suggest they can also learn to understand more than 160 different phrases or orders.

- They don't only hear sounds; they also connect words with actions and feelings.
- Important are context and repetition.
- Your dog learns what important from how consistent you are.
- Talk to them plainly and train them often, and they'll start to get more than you expect.

As humans, we can’t wait for the holiday season. It’s a fun time when neighbors, old friends, and family visit more than usual.

Holidays bring joy, laughter, and guests, but for your dog, that can also mean unfamiliar smells, new noises, and even losing their usual spot on the couch!

Help your dog stay calm by keeping as many of their predictable routines as possible. Stick to their normal walk and feeding schedule, and consider moving their bed to a quiet spot so they can still keep up with their naps.

You can also provide a new chew toy or licky mat to keep them occupied when your attention is on visitors. And taking a long walk before guests arrive can help your dog work off extra energy.

But one of the most effective ways to support your dog during the busy holiday season is play. Intentional play helps fulfill their needs, release energy, and build positive emotional associations with all the activity happening around them.

A lot of training methods focus only on calming your dog down, but that’s not a long-term fix. Dogs need more than stillness; they need structured ways to express their natural instincts.

A dog that is merely suppressed all of the time often becomes anxious or acts out.
True confidence comes from meaningful engagement: play, structure, and guided interaction, not simply shutting your dog down.

Use your energy to play, guide, and bond with your dog, rather than pushing them away.

Give a Present That Lasts After the Holidays

St. Nicholas was known for being kind, and what better way to honor that than by giving yourself and your dog the gift of clear, calm communication?

Training your dog to obey isn't only about giving them commands. It's also about building trust, making them behave better, and making your home more tranquil. This holiday, give your dog the structure they need to be happy and healthy. You'll have a happier and less stressful holiday season.

Are you ready to make this a season to remember? Visit thetrustedcompanion.com to find out more about our Board & Train services.

Some dogs fare better with structure, while others need it. Dogs typically fill the gaps with behaviors that don't help them or their people when we give them too much independence too quickly.

Rules that are easy to understand make people feel safe.
Knowing what will happen lowers stress.
Setting limits gives you freedom.

A dog who listens, trusts, and relaxes into their role in the family is built by consistency.
