This is the type of magic possible with true dedication to understanding kitty cat body language, learning to build trust and a sense of safety with each kitty patient, and practicing Fear Free techniques and truly low stress handling. Here Dr. Maher collects blood and urine without assistance on our very fearful and flighty patient, Pepsi. It took a non-traditional approach meeting Pepsi in her closet where she felt safe, taking (and having) the time to assess what would work best for her, understanding how to proceed calmly and safely and effectively, and not being afraid to try. There was nothing keeping her still but calm energy and encouragement from a snuggly blanket! We truly believe that these types of interactions with our patients involve skills that CAN be taught and learned. What it requires is letting go of ego and understanding and believing that the way we were taught to literally restrain patients years ago is not the kindest OR safest path forward. Our profession knows better with regards to patient stress and how it affects safety and quality of medicine, client experience, and so much more. Knowing this but not making changes in our behaviors is a choice; knowing and choosing to do better is a better choice. Sure, kitties who are amenable to a solo sample collection with minimal handling are not exactly common, but we believe that if someone feels they need to scruff a cat, use Kevlar cat gloves, or otherwise forcefully restrict a cats movement for non-emergency situations, they really should pause and consider a different path forward. We have so many tools in our toolkit if we open our hearts and minds to use them. And let’s face it, our veterinary patients deserve nothing less. #tranquiltabby #mobilevetclinic #catvet #felinefriday #fearfreecertifiedprofessional #catfriendlypractice #catfriendlyveterinarian #lowstresshandling #catsofinstagram #catlover #veterinarian #housecallvet #catloversofinstagram

Fun Fact! 🎈 Dr. Maher and tech Alexa both grew up figure skating! They met working in vet med but bonded over the love of the ice.
