Creating Safe Space for Holidays
SAFE SPACE: Prevent Holiday Stress & Incidents for Your Dog
A safe space for your dog can help prevent bites, stress or behavioral issues for your pets over the busy holiday season. Here's what you need to know:
šŸ¶ What is a Safe Space?ļæ½A designated area where your dog wonā€™t be disturbed by visitors, kids, or other pets. Itā€™s helpful for ALL dogs, not just anxious or reactive ones.
šŸ¾ How to Create One:
ā€¢ Use tools like stair gates, puppy pens, or room dividers.
ā€¢ For dogs who jump gates, you can stack two gates (carefully).
ā€¢ Open-plan homes? Get creativeā€”long stair gates or pens can work as dividers.
ā€¢ Avoid closing doors unless your dog prefers being completely away from visitors.
šŸ›‹ļø Tips to Make it Comfortable:
ā€¢ Choose a space your dog already enjoys.
ā€¢ Add favorite items like their bed, toys, or worn clothing that smells like you.
ā€¢ Use activity toys (Kongs, Toppls) to keep them happy.
ā€¢ Add white noise like a box fan to muffle strange noises.
ā€¢ Gradually introduce the space before the holidaysā€”help them feel safe and relaxed there.
šŸš« What to Avoid:
ā€¢ Donā€™t confine your dog in a crate unless they love it (door open, in a larger pen is better).
ā€¢ Keep the area free of hazards and ensure kids or guests canā€™t access it.
šŸ” A safe space ensures your dog feels secure while reducing holiday chaos. Even the most sociable dogs can benefit, especially during overwhelming moments like guest arrivals or noisy playtime.
Letā€™s keep everyoneā€”dogs and visitorsā€”safe and happy this Holiday Season!

First, we want to say thank you so much to our village! Your generosity made it possible for a little holiday miracle to occur ā˜ŗļø
Gordon had his appointment with a board certified cardiologist and was diagnosed with Equivacol subaortic stenosis. Basically this means he has mild SAS and will need monitoring as he grows. Due to your generosity, this little guys diagnosis will allow his family to monitor for any progression and be proactive in his care.
Gordon is now settling in with his loving forever home and enjoying play time with his Newf and Pyr siblings. Can I get a WOOT WOOT for happy endings? šŸ„³
As expensive as these diagnostics can be, they are quite literally life-saving in many cases.
In even more good news there was a rare surplus of funds we raised which went towards Hickoryā€™s repair of his umbilical hernia, the size of which the vet compared to a golf ball! Phew, glad thatā€™s all taken care of!
Thank you again village, we hope Gordonā€™s little miracle has made your day as it made ours ā¤ļø
In extra good news, Hickory has found his forever home too!

Itā€™s the Holiday Season and watching movies is a great way to spend time together with the family. While none of these films will win an Oscar and the plot lines are not challenging, they are great movies for children and just a lot of fun. Who knows? Your dog may even want to watch with you.
My boys enjoy ā€œTV Timeā€ where they can each kidnap a human by laying their head on a lap and getting ear scratchies as we all watch.

16/12/2024

An imagined conversation between my two dogs:
Byron (B): Hey brudda what is momma doing? Why is she and the man human moving the furniture around?
Sinjin (S): Its Christmas. They need room for the tree
B: They are bringing a tree inside? What kind of tree?
S: One of those trees that donā€™t have leaves. And once it is inside they are going put lights on it and all kinds of things.
B: Why? Momma got upset when I brought the whole bush in the house. And are the things on the tree, toys? Can I eat them?
S: It is a human thing. And no you canā€™t eat them or play with them. Just ignore it, even if one of the evil cats run under it. And when they put paper wrapped things under it, do not open them until Momma says it is okay.
B: But why, I like to tear up paper!
Right, that is how I imagine the conversation might go. I have no real idea how they might view everything going on during the holiday season. But it is different and dogs like consistency. They do not understand what is happening. And when dogs do not understand things, they react in typical dog fashion.
Since everyone wants to have a happy holiday season, here are some tips to help your pet not get into trouble this season.
1. When you bring the tree inside, leave it bare and let him get used to it. Dissuade your dog from messing with it until the dog thinks it is just another house plant
2. A lot of people love to decorate with the traditional things: popcorn garland, candy cane, cookies, and chocolate. Not only are some of these things toxic to dogs, but they are just taunting the dog and at some point the dog will lose the battle of self control and the tree will end up being knocked down
3. A lot of seasonal plants are toxic to pets. If you buy or are given poinsettias, amaryllis plants, holly and mistletoe, do not put them where your pets can reach them.
4. Use a baby gate to create a barrier to the Christmas tree so the pets cannot get to it
