MONKEE update!
In February we introduced you to Monkee (and her friend Wally Wombat) after they were humanely trapped and brought into rescue. While being treated for medical issues, we searched for potential owners for 30 days - no sign of anyone looking for either of them. We believe the two met each other on the streets. Once in our care and safe, Wally preferred not to be with Monkee any longer.
Monkee has old leg trauma and scarring. Scarring leads us to believe she was tied up by her leg and she suffered trauma while getting out of being tied up. She only has one toe now and there were many fractures in her paw. We chose - after imaging and vet consults - to not amputate rather have a custom support brace made for her. Our friends at Pet Ortho Braces in Scottsdale fixed her up.
That was the right decision. Look at her go now! She has a pending adoption so is no longer available.
She loves the digs - and especially her trips to the doggie splash pad - at Heidi's Village! We wanted you all to see her on the go with her new brace!
Meet Monkee and Wombat! (POST 1)
The week of Feb 26, we were contacted by Maricopa County Animal Control Officers about this pair. They had been hanging around a church parking lot near 31st Ave & Glendale in Phoenix. Animal Control Officers were unable to secure them and reached out. With the help of our rescue partners at HARTT - Humane Animal Rescue and Trapping Team, they were both humanely trapped and transferred into our care by Feb 29th. Neither of them were in good shape. Wombat, the grey 'little', was in desperate need of a mercy groom and care for wounds/ skin issues underneath his awful matting. Monkee was not putting weight on her rear right leg (look close in the video attached) and appeared to be missing part of her paw. Scarring indicates that she may have been tied up by that leg. We're not really sure what happened but she is being cared for by our veterinary partners now. We believe that a prosthetic device is likely in her future as we do what we can to save her leg. Monkee is a AmBulldog/ Boxer and we're not really sure what Wombat is - likely a Schnauzer/ Chihuahua type mix? After the mercy groom, he only weighs 5 pounds.
We believe they likely found each other and paired up while on the streets. Once secure with us, there's really been no interest, by either of them, for the other. There is no bond now. We're adding pictures in a second post since we're unable to add them to this video post.
They are still under medical care but will be available soon!
***Friday 12/29/23 1:45PM: Very sad update. We lost "Joy" to Distemper this morning. She deserved so much more from life - just a chance at life with $20 vaccines. A few of those would have saved her. Rest in peace sweet baby girl.***

Meet "Joy".... She is one of our holiday saves...
She was an unclaimed stray at Maricopa County Animal Care in Phoenix. She sat in a kennel waiting for someone to claim her for two weeks - no one came. As time went on, she got sick. She is out of the shelter, in BLR care and getting much needed medical treatments. She is currently medically isolated while we wait for the results of a comprehensive respiratory swab panel test to come back from the lab. She is young, sick and very scared.
Welcome to your rescue family sweet girl. It's going to be so much better for you very soon... Hang in there little one....
We are working on getting three more out of the same shelter - all three sick and/or injured as well. Stay tuned.
