I get asked fairly often “When is my horse going to go faster?”

When you send me your horse to train, my goal is making a solid, safe, confident horse for you to eventually run and enjoy. This is not a quick and rushed process. Creating a solid horse takes a good amount of time. How long? That I can’t tell you, it varies on each particular horse. Were they actually broke enough to immediately start on the pattern when they come to me? Were they confident? Horses don’t work on a time line, they don’t understand what your budget may be, or when a futurity is. So my answer to your question is “When THE HORSE is ready.”.

They may look “ready” to you in the videos I send where they are slow loping the pattern so pretty. But that doesn’t mean they are ready. Usually in a video you can’t tell how much I am helping them stay correct! When they can stay correct with little help from me, and feel confident going through the pattern, then they are ready for more. That is something that is felt, not always necessarily seen, especially to the untrained eye.

I don’t rush the training process. If you want it done quick, I’m probably not the right trainer for you. I prefer to make a horse that will last you, not fall apart after 6 months. Be patient, trust the process, and it will all come together in time.

Thoughts for today: listen to your horse. You can turn a 4 figure horse into a 6 figure horse if you listen and you can turn a 6 figure horse into a 4 figure horse if you ignore him.

Two months ago I made a 1D run that was 2 tenths off the winning time with 300+ entries. Yet, something felt off. I couldn't pick out a mistake, but something was off. The following weekend, he "struggled" again. I took a sound horse to the vet. The vet trotted him and guess what? Sound. After we watched his videos and did more digging, we found the source of the problem. Pain that was hidden a little deeper than what was meeting the eye. A little R&R, and we'll be back in full swing shortly.

Had I ignored this horse, I'd be wondering why he wasn't cooperating and where I failed as a trainer & jockey. What am I doing that is making him fall apart? Horses talk to us everyday. By the time they're developing bad habits, they're yelling to us from the rooftop. And yet some people still refuse to listen. Instead, "What drills can I do to fix this?" While those drills to fix the "problem" are likely adding more pain and solidifying the bad habits. The best drill to start with is making sure you have a happy, healthy horse via an assessment by a PERFORMACE vet. A good horse doesn't wake up and think of what he can do to frustrate us and get schooled. Whether you're a professional, amateur, or anywhere in between, it's your job to learn to listen to your horse.

10 days in and a WORLD of a difference already

3 beautiful, healthy girls born this am at 4 A.M. ( after leaving at 3am for a barrel race Saturday A.M. then the generator getting water in the gas and turning off at 2 A.M. Sunday in 27° weather... the closest Walmart was 37min away and didn't open until 6 A.M, then finally puppies at 4 A.M. this morning 😴)

The two chocolate girls are available, they've got adorable white marks on their chest ❤️

What a way to ring in the New Year. The futurity c**ts were both in the top of the 2D out of 300 tough entries with a few errors, Pakman was in the 1D and to top it off I came home to 5 colorful, healthy puppies. Let's keep up this good mojo all year!
