Shake was 4 1/2 years old when she was turned over to BSR in 2023 after experiencing a traumatic injury to her lower spine. Once in BSR's care, the neurologist evaluating her determined that the damage was beyond repair and even with surgery she had less than a 15% chance of ever walking again. The decision was made not to put her through surgery, having such a poor prognosis of ever walking again. Although Shake is unable to walk, she is able to hold herself up and has a wheelchair to assist her. Early in 2024, Shake underwent emergency pyometra surgery. Through it all, Shake remains happy and is loved beyond measure by her permanent foster family.

Pigeon came into BSR's care on the heels of some frightening seizures for a dog so young. Her owners were concerned that they might not be able to handle any special care she needed. In foster care, she did have more seizures, though they subsided for a bit, and she was eventually adopted. Her seizure activity is well controlled with medication now, and she is teaching her older Boykin brothers to keep on their toes around her!! She is thriving and so loved!

Dear Friends-

As we have shared throughout the year, 2024 has been one of our most challenging years in some time. As of December 2, we have taken in 116 dogs and anticipate another 5 by year end. Of the 116 intakes, 12 tested heartworm positive and have or are undergoing treatment; 77 will require spay/neuters; and we are carrying 23 permanent foster care dogs. In total, we have care for over 170 dogs, many with catastrophic needs—at a time when the costs of veterinary care are spiraling ever higher. So, I am writing today to ask for your support as you consider your end-of-year charitable donations: our goal with this fundraising campaign is $150,000.00.

Although we anticipated and planned for the increase in the number of intakes, what we could not have predicted is the number of litters and catastrophic cases. We have had 16 pups born in our care this year and also pulled a mamma dog with another adult male and her 3 pups from a shelter. Of those intakes, 9 of those dogs and pups turned out to be parvo positive or parvo-exposed as were another five, 3 1⁄2 -month-old pups we took in all at one time. Altogether 8 of these 14 parvo cases required treatment at specialty hospitals. In addition, we have had 26 catastrophic cases.

Below are some of our catastrophic cases:

• 1 heart surgery for a 4-month-old pup with a congenital issue
• 1 dog requiring surgery to implant semi-custom titanium plates for both wrists that were damaged in a fall from a great height
• 1 spinal procedure to reduce chronic pain in a permanent foster’s lumbo-sacral region
• 1 cancer surgery for an easily removed mass with no metastasis and an excellent prognosis
• 3 surgeries to remove benign masses
• 1 orthopedic surgery for a grade 4 luxating patella
• 2 pyometra surgeries and 1 surgery for removal of mammary tumors
• 1 emergency eye surgery for a subluxated eye lens
• 2 forearm amputations necessitated by shattered elbows prior to intake
• 6 obstruction surgeries
• 8 parvo cases requiring treatment at specialty hospitals
• 1 dog with internal bleeding that required testing and working with vets at a teaching hospital

We realize that 2024 has been challenging for so many members of the Boykin community. From historically destructive storms, where people have lost so much, to health issues and more, the Boykin family was always there with support for BSR and its rescues. We appreciate you more than we could ever convey!

WE HAVE AN UPDATE!

"Hi BSR Family!

This is Marlin with my long overdue update. I was found running and wandering, wearing my underground fence collar. I didn't have any identifying information and I wasn't chipped. The shelter called BSR and you guys were awesome and took me into care. I was heartworm positive and a little underweight from my adventures. I found my way to my forever family and I am living my best life! Who knew just how fun life could be?! Car rides and boat rides are two of my favorite things.I'm always first in line for both of those adventures. If I'm not on an adventure, my days are filled with exploring the farm and working my "patrols." I like to be sure there are no unwelcome visitors on MY land. There is a blue heron that lives on my pond and we play a fun game of chase several times a day. I know he enjoys it too because he always comes back for more! When I'm not chasing the heron or working patrols, I take care of my special Springer sister, Amy the Dog. We became best friends shortly after I joined the family. Now that she is an older lady, I enjoy taking care of her. I go outside with her to make sure she stays close by and I make sure she has a good spot on the bed. My mom says I'm very patient with her, because she can be a handful. You know how those Springers are! My bestest, most special talent is welcoming the new Boykin fosters that we get. I like to show them the ropes and help them navigate the politics of the house. I know how overwhelming it felt when I first joined my family so I work hard to make the new guys feel welcome and comfortable. I help my humans teach the fosters "good dog manners" so they can eventually live their best lives with their forever families too! Thanks again to all the mighty fine folks at BSR for all your hard work to make our little brown dreams come true!
