We are taking deposits on our 2024 litter! Blackberry and Cash are expecting an all black litter early May. You can message us for more details and question or complete our puppy application. These puppies will make great hunters, detection dogs and will do well in a variety of dog sports. Both parents have excellent health and genetics. Updates about Sam make us so happy. Sam was in our gun dog program when his owner and friend of ours, unexpectedly passed away. Sam became like one of our own dogs while he was here, and we knew we wanted Sam to go to someone who would let him grow into a great hunting partner. I believe he hit the jackpot and we can’t thank Derrick enough for believing in Sam and giving him this opportunity.

We knew Grace was a petite girl, but next to Jason she looks like a puppy, only as tall as his knee. She just turned a year old in August and is only 43 pounds. She’s got a lot a drive and is a little land missile going after birds. We look forward to her future!

We attended the Flint Oak Labrador Retriever Club’s mid week Master test last week. They put on a great test, and we would like to thank all the judges, workers, club members, and everyone else involved that helped make it a great test. We would also like to congratulate our owners on their dogs receiving passes.

As hunting season approaches, every year I deal with people wanting to jump the gun to get their dog out of training and get them out in the field to start hunting.

For some dogs, experience is a good teacher.
For others, they need more experience from their teacher before they’re ready.

Few people truly understand what it takes to have a dog that you can put in the truck, take anywhere in the country chasing waterfowl and them perform like a well oiled machine. Even fewer people realize the time and commitment it takes to take a puppy to that level.

Oftentimes people see their dog starting to run blinds in training and think they have a dog that’s ready to go hunting. This couldn’t be any further from the truth and is a true recipe for disaster.

As hunters we get excited and caught up in the commotion of the hunt and forget that we are supposed to still be teaching that young pup with the foundation how to use those skills in this scenario.

We often try sending them on marks that are too challenging, ending in us trying to handle and it not going so well, crushing the confidence of the dog and the dogs confidence in you as a handler.

Or the classic, your buddy says “I’ve got one down right over there! Send your dog! He’s been at a trainer for a reason, right?!” So you send your dog only for it to end in your dog creating bad habits that you have to replicate to fix, which is extremely hard for most people to do. You are better off walking out half way until it’s a sight blind for a young dog or for a seasoned dog at least get out of the blind so you are visible. Take your gloves off so your cast are visible with your white palms.

It’s imperative we set our pups up for success in their first season whether it’s a started dog learning the ropes or a dog that’s running great cold blinds, poison birds, etc.

Just because they may be excelling in the task in training does not mean they are going to excel in the same task on a live hunt.

Lower your expectations and build on success this season.

Don’t rush a young dog to go hunting too soon.

Build the skills to help them succeed in the field and then take them and you will have a better hunting companion for years to come rather than wishing you would’ve kept building the foundation before you tried moving in the house.

I know this all from experience and I hope my experience helps you.
