Meet CHERRY!

This sweet boy needs a quiet home with a patient and understanding family that does not have small children. He needs a family who has time to work with him on socialization and positive reinforcement training as well as giving him ample one-on-one attention so he can bond with his people.

Cherry is smart, observant and really wants to be loved, but is a little unsure of how to accept it. He walks well on a leash, but can be reactive towards dogs he doesn't know. He also likes to play with other dogs, but will need slow introductions. Cherry has the potential to be a great family member, if given the right tools and commitment from his new family. Look at that face, nothing but love there. DOB 7/17/23, 40lbs

Meet RUDDY

Ruddy is a happy little guy who loves to play with other dogs and toys and is the life of the party. He has not been socialized around many people and will need time to adjust before feeling comfortable with being picked up. Due to his lack of socialization, he would be most successful in an adult only home with another resident dog. Please apply to meet Ruddy soon. He is in a great foster home and his foster parents are happy to answer any questions you may have. DOB 10/20/20, 24lbs

Hi, I'm Slinky!

I am an independent fella looking for an experienced, adult only home; older teenagers ok. Like a lot of pups, I'll need slow introductions to new people and other dogs, but once I'm comfortable, I can get really silly, sweet and cuddly. I do ok with cats as long as they can stand their own ground and I'd really like a buddy to pal around with so I don't get lonely when my humans are away. I like to stretch my legs with a sprint across the yard, so I'm hoping my forever home will have a spacious back yard that will allow me to get some exercise in on my own time. If not, walks are great too! My DOB is 8/31/18 and I am 12lbs. Please come and meet me soon!

GIVING TUESDAY! MEET THE PACK! FLEETWOOD. FLEETWOOD IS NOW READY FOR ADOPTION AFTER TWO YEARS IN OUR CARE.

A special little pup who had the roughest start to life and is finally ready to be the puppy she was always meant to be! We wanted to share her story so you can see the kind of pets we are able to help when you support our rescue.

Fleetwood came to our rescue from Mexico. Although she was thin, there wasn't any apparent medical issues. Soon, Fleetwood's foster mom noted that she was drinking a lot of water and wasn't as energetic as other puppies her age. We had some tests done and realized she was anemic and had ehrlichia, a relatively common blood born parasite. She was treated but didn't seem to improve. We took her to a specialist who was able to do further testing and an ultrasound, which showed a problem with her uterine stump. Exploratory surgery revealed that she had a transmissible venereal tumor, a treatable type of cancer. Over the course of many months, Fleetwood was treated, underwent chemo, and the cancer went away! Yay! But Fleetwood wasn't out of the woods yet. Unfortunately, she developed a complication from the first surgery and had to have a second surgery. She is recovering now from that surgery and is finally doing well. She has no more underlying medical issues and we hope that she will be available for adoption in the next month or so. Talk about a dog with a "tail!" Your support of our rescue helps dogs like Fleetwood!

You can find Fleetwood following Lilo around or waiting patiently to be loved by a human.

Giving Tuesday is just about over. We hope you enjoyed meeting some of our Pack members at Sunny Skys. We have many more dogs with special needs that need extra care. With extra cares comes extra expenses.

Meet REBEL
DOB: 6/2/16
Weight: 30lbs

Rebel is a loyal companion that is eager to find his forever family. He's an older, reserved, gentleman that has already sowed his wild oats and doesn't ask for much. He's happy with a stroll around the neighborhood or relaxing with his favorite people. He's good with cats and other dogs but would prefer a home without small children. Rebel does have some resource guarding tendencies with food and would need a family that could continue positive reinforcement training. Rebel is deserving of a forever family and hopes to find one very soon.

GIVING TUESDAY! Meet the Pack! RUE

You may have remembered Rue from past posts. Rue has been in our care and part of the pack for almost 3 years now. Rue was transferred to our rescue from the Humane Society, where he was due to be euthanized because of his condition. He was extremely underweight as a result of having megaesophagus. This is a condition where the esophagus, the muscular tube that normally propels food from the mouth, down to the stomach, is dilated. There are many causes of this. Rue's was caused by a persistent right aortic arch, which is a band of tissue that constricts the esophagus. As a result, very little food was able to get into his stomach. He was emaciated and at constant risk for developing aspiration pneumonia.

Despite Rue's hardships, Rue was always happy. Even on his weakest days, he wagged his tail, and he licked our faces as he laid in our laps. Rue was able to have surgery to help improve his condition by having the band of tissue removed, however shortly after surgery he developed aspiration pneumonia and nearly died. It's only with the dedication of our medical team's voluntary efforts day and night, that Rue pulled through. We received recommendations of euthanizing Rue, but we had hope no one else could see. Rue had a strong spirit and will to live. Rue had many urgent moments where we were not able to always fundraise, but we pulled together and quickly spent $11,000 for life saving efforts, and thankfully, RUE PULLED THROUGH AND HAS BEEN THRIVING! He's so happy, thankful, and he loves having the strength and energy to be the puppy he was always meant to be! Rue is looking for a special home. He still has, and always will have, megaesophagus. He is still fed in a Bailey Chair (a chair that holds him upright, where he sits for 15 minutes after meals to give his body time for the food to stay down). His food is blenderized and although he does require extra care, Rue will repay you in puppy love, tail wags.

You can often find Rue hanging out with the Goats at our property.

We hope you consider donating to Sunny Skys for Giving Tuesday so we can continue helping happy dogs like Rue.

GIVING TUESDAY: Meet the Pack. VEGA

Our rescue is not an average dog and cat rescue. Our dream is to open our sanctuary to the public soon and have the ability to modify it to accommodate the animals needs and wants. With our new property, we will have the ability to help more animals, in a more effective, efficient way.

Our rescue is unique in that we take the dogs and cats often no one else will think about taking. The old dog with one eye who needs extensive dental surgery, sure! The senior cat with a tumor who has been left behind when his owners moved away, Yes! The paralyzed German Shepherd who is happy as can be but needs assistance with pretty much everything, of course! We don't say yes because we think people will want to adopt these animals. We say yes because we know there is no one else who will. We say yes because we believe with enough care, love, and dedication that we can make people see what we see in these animals. Not their breed, or their size, but the soul of these special dogs and cats and how when the personality of a pet is considered when finding them a lasting, forever home, matches can be made that create bonds that are not only life changing, but inspiring.

Throughout the years, our veterinarian has gained a reputation as the vet whom you take any found injured animal. The community knows she will help, no matter the cost, no matter the extent, she will go to any length it takes to save them. Whether it be a squirrel, a goat, a pig, or a dog, Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue has served as a sanctuary for all.

We know at this time of year, there are numerous causes asking for your help and we hope that you might take a chance on us to see we are different. We want to be better, do more good, and improve and we can only do this if given the chance. As we launch our fundraising efforts we would appreciate to the moon and back if you would support and share our fundraiser. We are not state, city or county funded which leaves us with a small team, but we certainly believe we are one of the most dedicated team of volunteers around. We so appreciate your time, consideration and well wishes as we embark on this scary and exciting adventure towards helping animals who need us the most.

Below pictured is Vega (aka Zoomie Zoom), a sweet puppy born in 2018 at our shelter with a cleft palate. During her puppy years she was tube fed every few hours until her surgery to repair her cleft palate. Which our supporters helped pay for. Vega is part of the Sunny Sky's Pack. We love her dearly. Even when she tears up important paperwork. You can often find Vega following our Vet around our property.

Please consider Donating to Sunny Skys Animal Rescue so we can continue helping dogs like Vega.

Our Story

It was 1999 when Dr. Illina Berton began practicing veterinary medicine on East Main Avenue. Her passion for animals had been a constant throughout her life, and for the next ten years the staff of the animal hospital were frequently involved with rescue. But in 2009 Dr. Berton knew she wanted to do more. After seeing a dog named Spike online, she drove to Southern California. Spike was due to be euthanized for minor medical issues. She knew she could help. When she arrived to the shelter, her world was forever changed. Seeing the perfectly adoptable dogs being euthanized due to overcrowding, she decided to dedicate her life to saving them. Dr. Berton adopted Spike, who became nicknamed "Sunny Sky" as his gloomy days were far behind him, and soon there would be sunny skies for thousands of ill fated animals. It only seemed fitting to name our shelter after the dog who inspired what is now known as Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue & Hospital.

In 2010, Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue, a 501(c)3 Non Profit Organization was founded as Dr. Berton converted her practice into a shelter. Together the team fundraised to purchase an old city bus that cost $5,500. February 27th of 2010, the team made the 17 hour journey to the East Valley Shelter in Van Nuys and packed the bus with over 40 dogs, and drove them to safety. It was a success! With an abundance of adopters in Northern Washington, people were eager to rescue the dogs saved by the Rescue Bus. Many trips were made, and hundreds of dogs and cats were saved from overcrowded shelters. Taking advantage of the unique opportunity of having a dedicated veterinarian, the rescue was able to take on dogs and cats who needed medical care no one else was able to provide. As the shelter grew, the demand for dogs and cats in Washington grew with it.

One gloomy day, the rescue bus hit a pothole on the freeway and was irreparably damaged. It was time to retire the bus and search for other means of transportation. Soon Sunny Sky's was partnering with other non-profits and shelters willing to transport the dogs to them, by land and by air. There was never a day the shelter would go empty.

The community of Puyallup began to know the rescue as safe haven for all, often bringing many injured, homeless animals to Dr. Berton as they knew she would do her best to save them. Whether it be a goat, a pig, a turkey or crow, we've seen it all!
